Fair enough. It’s not something I would normally follow despite being part of that industry.

Re the old, “grab twist pull” this was taught as something to try if you were being grappled, like in a headlock, where the twig and berries may be exposed. Not as a primary target for attack. The instructors were pretty adamant that you use a weapon, even if you improvised it from some keys or a good stick, first.

I came here to say something similar, maybe because I also work in defense, but USD A&S is a fairly important position. Also where he came from (and you work) and also his previous job (where I used to work) are well known, important DoD research labs. But I tend to keep up with these things.

They sent a mass text to russian soldiers and dropped a ton of 'if you want to surrender and get guaranteed safe passage out of the warzone, call this number' cards on russian positions

E: On a related note: There were also reports that ukraine was negotiating withdrawals with encircled/near-encircled russian units with the precondition of leaving all materiel behind intact and I'd kind of assumed that was likely just a propaganda story or something but lol pictures are going around of intact russian positions so maybe it wasn't bullshit

E2: the above would make some sense, too, insofar as Ukraine has deliberately been working to set up the conditions of the battles to facilitate exactly that kind of thing (eg cutting off all routes of retreat from kherson that you can drive anything heavier than a passenger car over). I guess it isn't that unreasonable, I'm just habitually really skeptical of good news until it's shown up enough times that it is clearly not a coincidence

Unless they speak Ukrainian, likely no. Philippines & India have large numbers of English speakers, which is why so many of USA call centers are in Asia.
Also, yeah I know this is probably a :thejoke:

I'm surprised that the Russians haven't gone all "scorched earth" in whatever areas they were able to organize a withdrawal. I feel like at this point any RU forces north of the Dneiper will be captured or will be destroyed in any attempt of crossing back.

You'd need a hell of a lot of logistics and ammo to scorch earth. Two things they are noted as not having.

That would delay and impair looting and criminal acts against civilians.

This is sarcasm, but probably has a kernel of truth considering the Russians.

The thing about scorched earth is that it takes time and effort to do it properly. You can’t just flick a lit cigarette into a wheat field and reliably expect the whole thing to burn down, and just lobbing a few artillery shells into a city can’t guarantee you’ll wreck critical infrastructure beyond repair. Before you can even start burning everything down you need to identify what’s worth burning down, determine how best to burn it down sufficiently to deny its use to the enemy long-term, assemble the troops and materials you need to start burning, etc etc.

In comparison it’s a lot easier to just shoot a few holes into walls, grab what you can find and carry and run.
