I loving love photographing swallows - those are some great tips. Pre Focus + Group/3D tracking and generally watching them for a few minutes to find their patterns.

And yeah the keeper rate is about 1/100 or so lmao

Had a great day walking my favorite field. It was super humid after a rain storm, so everything was out looking for food and also exhausted from the heat. The hawk kept looking down into the field and I circled around slow hoping to maybe flush out a mouse he was eyeballing or something so I could capture him snacking. No such luck, but he did let me get closer than I felt comfortable with. It was like this with all the birds today. I guess if it's completely awful out, go take some photos!

Nice set, yeah weather is definitely something to look out for, the 1st nice day after a few rainy nights is good for owls hunting earlier in the evening for example.

Getting back into photography after a long lapse due to the pandemic. I got a new camera and lens (Fuji X-T4, Fujinon XF 70-300mm), and it's been fun to get familiar with them.

This Muscovy duck was hanging out at a local park:

drat, nice. my in-flight keeper rate in swallows is at about 0/2000.

this is the best swallow shot I've managed this summer, a barn swallow resting next to the marshy river;

These are real good - I've been in a bit of slump with some of my outings this summer, things definitely slowed down, not too much action up here and I haven't been as fervent about getting out there and making things happen.

I.. I saw a Monarch chasing a Swallow. I had no idea butterflies could fly that fast. I wish I could have caught that on camera, I was standing there looking like an idiot wondering if what I was seeing was even possible.

I finally got a pro telephoto lens a few months back (Olympus 300mm F4). I need a lot of practice still, but I’m quite proud of the shots I’m already getting with it :)!

In Mypos, only the strong survive.

Hi, everyone! I just discovered this thread after asking about camera lenses in the general photography thread. I got into wildlife photography last winter after hearing about places to see bald eagles in my town. Can't wait to look through the whole thread. At any rate, here's a picture I took yesterday with my new Tamron 150-600mm G2. They were right over my house. I have a Blue Jay that loves to imitate hawks, but this time it was the real deal when I got out there to look. Juvie Red-Tailed and Cooper's Hawks.

I like this. I've jumped up and run to get my camera and head outside to take a picture of the eagle that turns out to be a Steller's Jay wanting more peanuts.

Getting so busy in the late summer, haven't been out since late august :(
I'm starting to feel like I haven't been out and about enough this year to really get a good group of action shots - going through my instagram and looking through my exports, it's a lot of bird-on-a-stick stuff. Such a shame. I gotta start hunting more high action stuff.

Here's some from July 30th though.

Great Blue Heron

Eastern Kingbird

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Spotted Sandpiper

Northern Cardinals

Sure. It's not state of the art bird eye tracking modern, but it's fine if you are patient. Find a nice 200mm+ zoom and go nuts. Birds in flight aint easy tho. Sitting around and pooping? You're golden. EFS 55-250 is a great starting lens, and one I still use because it's just awesome. You can also do bug shots from 2.5' away. I think you can get one for around $100 used. Maybe less? I use a 100-400 for all the far away stuff (and super close stuff).
