yeah, not to really poo poo on the dude too much but for all that Beato talks a bunch about how he’s “first and foremost an educator” and all that he’s also a guy who quit teaching to go pro at like age 29

Hey guys, is there an ear training app that will just play intervals a couple times, wait a second, then tell you what they are? The idea is so you can do ear training and you just listen and try to answer along with it while you are working or driving or something. Every ear training app I've seen requires some amount of interaction. If not, I reckon it would be a really good idea. I could make some sound files from guitar pro and a text to speech program to mix up in a playlist. I'm just curious if it's already a solved issue.

The functional ear trainer app does have a hand free mode. It's not interval training exactly, though.

Oh I think I tried that one, but it was really confusing what you were even supposed to be doing and the interface and everything just seemed kind of bad. And I think it just plays general chord progressions that you listen to, then a random note and you pick out what scale degree it is, at least that's how it started me off. Is that the better way to do it, or is it better to just start with simple intervals?

I think the body is usually a bit offset? Thinking about it I'd like something like that with contouring like a Fender. Any recommendations for a tuner? I just got a Bass VI and my Korg doesn't pick it up for guitar tuning and it uses conventional 6 string bass tuning rather than E to E. Really not sure the low E is right either but it may just be breaking in.

I've found that very few (DAW or VST ampsim etc) tuners are much good when it comes to lower than drop D tuning. Even the ones in made for metal stuff like the Ndsp JST plugins seem to struggle with a standard low B on a seven, let alone bass guitar registers.if anyone has found any good ones I will be eternally grateful because try to tune a five string bass by fretting the 5th fret on the low string is painful.

Harmonics other than octaves shouldn't be used for thing because they're not exactly on the note, and I'm generally wary of tuning from fretted notes unless you usually play around there because intonation could mess with that.

The HB DCs are good at that price point. Hits the "no frills but decent playability" mark although will benefit from a proper setup and fretwork is fairly average. I got the worn brown MK 1 model (not the FAT one which has the 50s neck and a stacked humbucker) and the wraparound bridge was totally unsuitable for the neck angle so bottomed out way too high; I changed it out for a cheap Wilkinson one piece. Wiring was okay but I put an Alnico 2 dogear and 250K pots in. Nut was only held on by string tension too, hahaha. On a side note the 'ebony' fretboard is stained darker - looks like a cheaper wood underneath as they've only stained the front facing of the fretboard and the sides are more of a purple-red. If you get chance to pick up a Vintage V120 I'd recommend that first as half the mods I recommended will come as stock and the price point isn't that much above the HB. Plus they come in White which is obviously the best DC Jr colour.

Just dropped off my Subsonic at a local luthier for adjustment. Been fiddling with the setup on it and it never feels quite as good as I think it should be. Wondering if it lost a neck shim at some point; he took a quick look at it and said that might indeed be the case. Seller had the neck off for taking pics of the markings there so it's possibly a shim got lost then or at some earlier point in life. This is a bit beyond what I feel comfortable with and won't cost more than $70-80 or so here to get it setup properly so figured it's worth it. The guitar's an early 2000s custom shop so I'd like to make the most of it. Got such a good deal on it I've been worrying whether it was a fake / modded but he said it looks like the real deal and Fender's serial # lookup matches the config. Should get it back in a couple of weeks so excited to see how it turns out. Never had a luthier do a full setup before, perhaps it's something I should consider for a few others in the collection if it turns out well. I also made the mistake of playing with their giant pedal collection so walked home with a Metal Core. That thing sounded way better than I expected.

One of the biggest surprises wasn't just how much I eventually (after a long wait to put the new tuners, bridge, pickups and wiring harness in) not only fell in love with my first Les Paul-style but how I ended up recording a lot of tracks with it. It inspired me to play. I wanted a Les Paul for myself but holy poo poo Gibson's pricing. Circumstances came together just right for this one and after a little initial skepticism I am starting to to bond with it. The brand new Ibanez is looking at both of them sideways. It's a 2022 Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s. I wanted a trad finish, either white, gold, or (preferably) cherry burst. Really getting the authentic old-rear end LP vibes from this guitar. I am gonna say testing it in the store didn't help me at all, except I couldn't rule it out because it needed some real love. Action was ~2mm at the 22nd. I straightened the truss rod (too much relief) and lowered the bridge, a recipe for exposing high frets by making your guitar buzz. And pleased to report action now ~1mm and no buzzing. Very pleased so far. First audible note was just how woody and almost nasal it sounds. And on further experience it seems to be part of the magic sustain this thing has. The Firefly doesn't sound like this. This sounds legit vintage. Super useful, I have thrown every level of gain at it from "none" to "MESA/Boogie IIC+ driven with a Fulltone OCD are you nuts" at it and it laps it up. It exudes tone. I have a sample on my hard drive lemme get it hosted. In the meantime, how did I do? With plastics: Without:

Just get a used epiphone there’s not much of a point though cause the current main guitar (peach strat!) has a JB in the bridge which is super gibson-y, at least to my ears. and i love it a lot. i’m in no position to be buying another electric any time soon but as a secondary, concerned mostly with aesthetics, i want something kinda goth. like a black-on-black telecaster with a rosewood fretboard or something.

why get an lp when you could get a danelectro I will make the case that a dano is a perfect 3rd/4th guitar because it's guaranteed to not sound anything like your main guitars, they're light as gently caress, they're cheap so you don't feel bad beating them around, and they get the dirtiest crunch like nothing else with a little bit of overdrive

LG for what it's worth you can goth with almost anything. Stats, LPs, whatever. Robert Smith played a jazzmaster for years and then switched it for a bass vi. He has custom Schecters, one of which looks like you asked a child to draw a tele from memory. He played an eastwood that looked like an enormous toy for like a decade.

Good Soldier Svejk posted:why get an lp when you could get a danelectro This is the most correct answer to any GAS question. My seafoam green dano 59m might not be my most played guitar (my tele always just feels like home base no matter what music I might be playing at the moment) but it's definitely the funnest to play. It sounds so loving trashy and great with some overdrive it makes me wanna kick stuff over. I have light guage 9s on it and that combined with weighing like 3 ounces makes it so ridiculously easy to play too. I remember Phoebe Bridgers played a black and white one when she wanted to look spooky I also got the matching little honey tone battery amp, it sounds like garbage but it's really cute and was only like $25
