This is 100% not true lol. Even lower budget tv shows almost universally shoot two or three cameras at once. A couple persnickety directors may shoot only one camera at a time, but those are rare exceptions. Huge stunt scenes may have nine or more cameras working, including drones, helicopters, and unmanned DSLRs in danger zones.

Yeah, you have Michael Bay shooting with like a hundred cameras in case something cool happens during the explosion, and you have Chris Nolan who is insistent on being fussy and meticulous with his framing (and shoddy audio), or artsy fartass low-budget directors using like a single camera documentary style. They're the extremes. Pretty much everyone else, like 95%, have at least 2 or 3 for coverage, shot/reverse-shot, backup, close-up, wide, etc. Your cinematographers are pretty much always going to be on your prime camera, but there's a whole secondary team of camera operators on just about any studio film with any kind of budget. If you're shooting like the quiet scene with the two leads in a hotel room sitting on the bed facing the camera sharing their feelings or whatever you'll have your prime camera framing them close and at least a wide shot so you can break up the scene in editing so you don't have a boring, static shot. And it goes without saying any exterior shot with extras, cars, animals, stunts, anything bigger than two people in a room you'll have at minimum 2 and if you're smart at least 3 or 4. I specifically mentioned stunt scenes. Likewise, movies with a lot of A-list talent may shoot on multiple cameras because those people have very tight schedules and it's expensive to have them on set - marvel, for example, does this a lot and it's part of why they look like television. Traditionally, though, cinema is single camera because you want to light and often compose different shots differently - it's a different lighting setup to make a close up look good than it is a wide shot. Shooting multi cam involves a lot of compromises that you don't want to take if you want your cinematography to look good. Edit: to be clear, I'm not saying multi cam is rare these days, especially on higher budget productions. With digital there's almost no reason not to, even if you're unlikely to use the B cam footage. I'm just saying that traditional cinematography is single cam, it's not particularly weird or unusual. The audio commentaries on El Mariachi and Desperado are so worth listening to. - Not enough money for black paint to paint an entire guitar case? Just only ever show the guitar case with its lid open, so you don't have to paint the lid. - Not enough extras as gangster minions? As soon as one gets shot, put sunglasses, a mustache and/or a different shirt on him and send him back in.

The crazy thing about El Mariachi wasn't just that he had one camera, it's that he wasn't doing full takes with each angle. He would shoot a scene up till he decided a cut would happen, everyone froze, and he moved the camera to the new angle. He had zero coverage and could literally only use the shots that he got in the moment. And he did this with zero storyboards to plan the shots.

Yeah Rodriguez got noticed way back when for making a decent feature for something like $10k. His success is based on his frugality. His movies make money because they’re so drat cheap. Even his expensive films are cheap by modern standards
