Had my first mooncakes, today. Got them from costco. They weren't half bad! It was probably because of the lotus seed paste and ungodly amount of sugar in them. How do they make the egg yolks so firm inside them?

Re: alcohol, Jiangsu has a really nice selection of plum wines. My current favourite is pomelo-plum wine, which at ~18% is more of a liqueur. It's perhaps too sweet on its own, and definitely not subtle, but it is legit excellent in a general sense, not just a restricted-to-China sense.

Good and expensive mooncakes are two wildly different things. To my uncultured western palette, the cheap ones are better since they don't have meat in them. Like lotus, bean, egg ok fine regular desert thing, add meat and it all goes sideways. All the ice cream ones were sold out or off the shelves, I wanted to try one so that's a shame. It's like when Halloween candy goes on sale now if you ever wanted a mooncake. Get a box from your casino.

my worst traffic experience was in Atlanta a long time ago on I think 185 and seeing a sign that said "LEFT FIVE LANES CLOSED" I ended up trying to figure out some other route using an atlas. fortunately I had plenty of time while sitting in traffic.

The Bay Bridge toll plaza in Oakland goes from 20 lanes down to 5, but it does it over the course of like half a mile instead of necking everything down immediately. It's still lovely to get through pretty much any time of the day.
