there's always been that interesting dichotomy between sonorie and alderode, and sonorie's actions and her attitude. alderode's grudge against cresce is mostly to stoke national fervor and secure the ruling class's power, but sonorie genuinely wants alderode gone. she also deliberately keeps herself ignorant about the fine details of her plan because she can't stomach the ramifications, which allows bell and his conspirators to run rings around her while claiming they're actually the Hard Men who Get Things Done

Now we're gonna watch her get stymied at the last minute by a combination of Bell's coup and the silver, the former of whom are using the excuse that she's not a Hard Man who can do Hard Things for their power grab. I forget how the Dammakhert specifically works but if the snake dude feeds on thoughts and Alds can use the Dammakhert to make everyone focus their hate on a single being, could Sonorie plug the snake guy into the Dammakhert and have him feast on an entire country's thoughts?

All the carnage definitely weights on Sonorie - she's lost her sister and Roger was a genuine friend even if their relationship was a farce - but she's not letting it stop her for a second. She wants to destroy Alderode and both her own people and innocent Alds on the other side, including the Ssaelit that will be genocided down to the last, are acceptable collateral.

And there's a non-zero chance that she, Bell and all of the council nobles in attendance don't survive the night. It's not nearly on the same level as the curse but effectively losing your entire government overnight is going to have ramifications. from a Crescian perspective the Alds have already done something to the khert that makes it genocidally inhospitable to Crescians, since children will be automagically altered by the Dhammakhert to be under its dictatorial grip, so corrupting it some more to make it inhospitable to most Alds is only turnabout Queen Sonorie seems thoroughly aware of what Bell is up to, but she doesn't seem to have tabs on the main characters as such, so perhaps she easily crushes Bell's insurrection only to have her main toying-with-cosmic-forces gambit get unintentionally ruined by some motley group of squabbling adventurers labouring under the impression that they need to save Sonorie from Bell
