Another protip as Katarina:

You get an Ataman for every 2 provinces you control. And it turns out that Praag, Hell Pit, and Brass Keep are all 1 territory provinces! So getting those on top of starting Kislev, and the nearby oblast is two Atamans right there. It's better to get Atamans early on because they end up with a lot of traits and the dilemmas are every ten turns or so. You can also move them to different provinces.

There's three ways to get Praag: You can deal with the penalties and capture them directly from Ropsmen to get it as early as possible, you can hope to confederate with them (took about fifty turns for me) or jump in right after Norsca captures or razes them.

Has it always been impossible to fly over Hexoatl's walls? I guess I've usually auto-resolved Hexoatl because this is the first time I've ever had a flying unit completely unable to target anything behind walls and not even being able to click a spot behind the walls to move to.

Is there any reason to use depth guard as VCoast? They do well in autoresolve but have I trouble actually doing anything but line-holding in manual battle. I fought another VCoast army that had multiple Depth Guard that couldn't wipe my polearm zombie gunnery mobs over the course of an extended battle, and they don't seem to get many kills/routs against lower-tier infantry when I use them. It seems to me like skipping straight from the polearm zombies to the monstrous units makes more sense unless you keep one unit around to guard your artillery or something.

Man, AR can be insane. One of my Tomb Kings just pulled off a masterwork of tactical stuff - AR'd Boris Todbringer, Karl Franz, and then seized a Dwarf fortress held by Wood Elves in one turn. Ushabti are love, life, and the crutch on which this playthrough rests.

My Khatep game has been fun and spicy. I tried to keep my friend options open early on to see who wanted to be my buddies, but ultimately my ally ended up being Grombrindal, since he friended up fully while Taurox rampaged through my territories. I beat the bull up, then had the option to autoresolve a victory I shouldn't have gotten (no way I could beat his half injured, mostly stalking stack with a wall-less tomb king garrison map. I decided to fight it out, lost narrowly, but that gave me breathing room to get Khatep home to chase him around until I killed him. The Skaven south to me stole one of my ruins, so I killed them, though the Sisters managed to take a chunk of their provinces.

Malekith decided to declare on me while my secondary (ushtabi guy) stack was nearby, so I ended up whuppin' him good. The vampire coast ghost betrayed me, but then was attacked from the rear by alith anar, who has become my second main buddy. I was able to consolidate until Malus showed up and ran through an entire province while I was tag teaming Malekith's mom's faction with the sisters. The sisters and I have had NAP/Trade the entire time, but they refused to give me military access until I gave them a city in return, and I needed it since I tried to get home to defend against Malus by sea and found myself crippled by two rogue pirates attacking me.

I threw a bunch of expendable armies at Malus to slow him down, then good guy Alith Anar, who hates dark elves so much he decided to ally with me, helped me wipe him out. now I'm helping my buddies beat up the north and getting rocked in the south by a crazy rogue army of shades and chosen.

And I haven't even left the west yet!! I still need to go to the badlands to get the dumb tomb kings victory!

Dec 20, 2012

Uh... Kupo?

I always hit a point where my LL's main army is somehow so much stronger than all enemies and the AR makes sure they never die whereas if I control them I lose way, way more dudes. Like Franz fights Grimgor with super elite troops and AR means I lose about 40 guys fielding mostly cavalry and halberds versus commanding them myself and potentially losing entire units. So I'm extremely disincentivized to actually fight battles with my Perfect Army. Which is fine since Franz is the least fun LL in the Empire roster. and it means that when I recruit Balthasar and Volkmar they're usually not so much more powerful than everyone they fight and I actually get to fight fun battles.

This is also why I really appreciate the mods with unit caps because it means that everyone has 10 or so bullshit units and it's not a system where you field an army that is either unassailably powerful or immediately outclassed by endgame units.

So Volkmar is crazy good now, at least early on. The Tomb Kings have no real answer for a heavily armored guy who shits out bombardments. I haven't yet gotten the book that gives everyone a prayer cooldown reduction but I'm headed there next. The buffs he gives to the Free Company are also nice; AP magical bullets go a long way to making them short-ranged handgunners who can stand up in melee. On top of that they get frenzy and the flagellant +defense buff too. What is weird though is how little he actually buffs flagellants. He gives his army the flagellant defense buff and his faction free company the flagellant frenzy. So by making basically every other infantry have the same effects as flagellants, you end up not really needing them. You have crazy free company and if you want them, durable as gently caress halberdiers.

He does get a technology that gives them -50% upkeep and 15% missile resist, but again, I just find myself not using them very much. I bring some just because I feel like he should have some. I don't know what to give them but some kind of...super frenzy? An aura effect they give to nearby allies akin to the Carroburg greatswords?

E: it is fun to have a melee heavy aggressive empire army instead of "how can I make them come to my halberdier line and get shot up by handgunners and artillery in a chevron". Like, I'm bringing just the Sunmaker and the RoR Helblaster because it's the only thing that keeps up with the fire-on-the-move free company, flagellants, and knights. And the Sunmaker just dumps all of its ammo immediately anyway.

Can anyone but your faction claim the books? I noticed that most of them were semi-close to my Khatep start (like, none in the middle of Cathay or anything). That might have been an interesting addition if not, having to go after a buffed up Manny or something because he claimed the three books near him.

I'm already not really looking forward to having to go after Hexoatl to grab a book there, I kind of wished I could be Mazi's bro since I'm firmly team good guy at this point and Khatep was my buddy in my WH2 Mazimundi campaign.

AR is funny like that, it can feel bad to AR battles that you know are way undercounting your opponent, but technically it makes the most sense. And then when you get a good army you want to fight with it but there are less and less worthy opponents and the game gets less interesting. Not really sure how to solve that issue though.

The ally system can help late game because you can take over allies small armies and just see what random fights you can get into, kind of like the Cathay caravan system or empire elector count assistance battles

My Kislev game is turning into one big Stalingrad type meatgrinder and getting my rear end kicked at so many settlement fights has taught me a few things. Like how you take your light cavalry and have it gently caress off in a direction because the AI likes to chase after it, and you can sometimes draw away up to 3 units very far from one of your entrances. If you had walls, you use these guys to clog up siege towers.

I built a ton of outposts on empire cities and it really paid off, turns out you can recruit from multiple outposts with the only limitation being a max of 4 unit cards. So a lord can recruit 4 ally units and whatever base unit they have, often doubling the number of units that can be mustered in a turn. If the ally is doing well you'll get access to their fun units. Right now I can recruit dwarf Grudge throwers, empire rocket batteries, and Brettonian Pegasus knights in my Kislev campaign.

sirtommygunn posted:

Hey I haven't paid attention to this since the game launched, did they fix all or at least most of the issues and make it as good as 2 yet?

The big issues with 3 were that the Realms of Chaos sucked and factions with DLC were deeper and more engaging than those without. I'd say that with Immortal Empires now out (so we have all the old factions) Immortal Empires is overall of the quality of Mortal Empires was at TWW2 - and some factions have been both moved revamped much for the better. In particular Volkmar and Mannfred have been moved to the Southlands to hunt the Books of Nagash and Ghorst has been moved out East and made the true zombie master, and Nakai's gone a-wandering into Cathay as has Lokhir while Tretch is back in Crookback Mountain and Grombrindal's up in Naggaroth. All have had their faction mechanics spruced up and the TK and Norscan economies have been given some much-needed buffs (while the Dark Elves have less economic micromanagement and the Helf economy doesn't break). Oh, and the Eight Peaks battle has Skarsnik and Queek (and to a lesser extent Belegar) start nearer their target.

There are a few legendary lords who've lost out; Karl Franz needs a bit of tweaking (it's close but there are a lot of niggles) and Tehenauin has lost the brutal start and is now just basically full of buffs. Alberic has gone wandering into Lustria but unlike the rest of the moved LLs doesn't really have his own campaign mechanics. And Oxoyotl's targets are sometimes brokenly powerful, coming up with multiple greater demons by turn 15. Grimgor's been moved up to the Northern end of Chaos Dwarf territory (and right by Kholek); I'm looking forward to playing him when the chaos dwarfs arrive but it's placeholders for now.

Oh, and the new Warriors of Chaos DLC is some of the best DLC. But you I think can play most of it if you only have the old WoC DLC - you get the revamp but are restricted to Archaeon, Be'lakor, Kholek, and Sigvald (the latter being not recommended as you're missing too much Slaaneshi stuff but your Undivided roster and boons are, I think, complete). Of the three I'd recommend Be'lakor at least until the Chaos Dwarfs show up due to start positions and due to Be'lakor being awesome and fun.

So yes, I think it's overall better - and even if you disagree there are now probably a dozen good new or revamped campaigns that are as good as any Warhammer 2 ones worth exploring. My biggest annoyance in both 2 and 3 is minor settlement battles (for different reasons).

I use the cost-based caps mod so that armies need to stay within a reasonably similar power level, a mod to boost AI autoresolve so that I need to fight manually more often and so that they're more willing to take on battles in general, and occasionally one that disables autoresolve unless the balance of power is either super high or super low. All of these combined really helps with all of this.
