Apparently a Kenshin remake is on the way:

Yeah ever since the incident I've completely avoided it even though I used to really love the manga.

True, I liked the show/manga back in the day but the whole deal with the author (who apparently still has a career for some reason) pretty much sours it

The manga still holds up for the most part, but the parts with the ninja girl do come across very differently when you know the author is a pedo.

How involved is he with this reboot? I'm really searching for any way I can to try to be happy about this but I know in my heart that he's probably still involved and profiting from it

There's a reality in which there'd be room for a certain degree of forgiveness and understanding if, let's say, he used his fame and wealth to combat or campaign against child abuse and exploitation. Perhaps set up a foundation or a series of PSAs. But he's not doing any of that.

You know there's an anime he should probably watch about a man working tirelessly to atone for the sins of his past...

Yeah I think I'd have an easier time with atonement than 'my famous friends argued for me' Polanski stuff

Idk much about the situation besides what others have said, but basically he had child porn, got arrested for it, got off fairly lightly all things considered, and now everything’s going great for him because it’s been swept under the rug without any real attempts on the mangaka’s part to publicly apologize?

IIRC some stuff he was working on got put on hold right after the news broke but then eventually started right back up again.

The only like extenuating circumstance is that IIRC he technically owned it when it was still legal to own that poo poo in Japan.

He just didn't get rid of it when it got banned.

Yeah, I dunno I might watch it but will just pirate it.

Yea it's still ongoing.

I feel like that won't be the case with the new anime, when it happened I had the impression that the sequel manga wasn't exactly doing big numbers in the west so it was easy for Viz to justify dropping it. An anime that's also a remake is a 'whole different story.

drat, Super Smartphone is really getting good. I'm glad we finally know more about Zenichiro's backstory and motivations. This chapter alone did a ton of heavy lifting to make him more than just a mustache twirling greedy villain. We maybe even have a villain that's "above" him.

Ginko & Gluna continues at a breakneck pace, but we have a likable new character at least! Hopefully she sticks around for more than two or three chapters, lol.

Tokyo Demon Bride Story is more of the same this week. Protag selflessly saves Waifu: Model Froppy, who is impressed cus nobody has ever shown her kindness before. Four chapters in and we haven't gotten a single named male character other than the protag, lol

The main villain from Platinum End was also a rich evil genius young man who wanted to resurrect his dead sister, although in Platinum End's case the circumstances of this actually made him more rather than less repulsive.

I'm guessing Seomizu's investigation of Zenichiro will provide a distraction that will save Q.

Super Smartphone continues to do poorly in the rankings, unfortunately. Do people really think PPPPPP is better than this?

Sleep, rest, do your best.
I was really into this chapter of ginka and gluna until the pace went absolutely breakneck in that spread, would have liked to see some adventures there. I’ll trust the process that this is just for purposes of getting to the actual story the author wants to tell.

IMO, if a story begins by rushing "just for purposes of getting to the actual story the author wants to tell," then the story probably should have begun in medias res in the first place.

strong disagree. its not really rushing, the montage simply tellls us that these tasks they are completing are beneath them and now we will see them face a real challenge.

if the splash page itself made you interested in seeing more then it was an effective one. Its just like having a travel montage in another type of story alluding to some minor adventures, trials, and tribulations but of which are not the focus of the actual story.

Ginko & Gluna: It is certainly keeping my attention with its blazing fast pace, but I'm not really sure I like it? It still feels pretty clumsy.

Tokyo Demon Bride Story: Frog girl is cute and there were some solid jokes (The "human world is hell .......can't argue with that" bit and Manaka intercepting the protagonist and Frog girl on scooter, complete with a blade drag). The manga itself exist in a weird Schrodinger state, where it clearly uses a lot of well-worn harem tropes and you are just kinda waiting when the other shoe will drop and everyone (including the sisters) will officially fall in love with the protagonist and turn the whole thing creepy, but if you pretend/believe that won't happen, the story is actually pretty wholesome? At the very least, the art is solid and there is zero fanservice so far.

If this was the only instance, then maybe. But this is just part of a pattern, with the first chapter cramming two or three standard chapters together rather than giving them a reason to breathe.

Comparing to Chainsaw Man, the previous gold standard for fast pacing, there we had a full chapter with Denji's old life before it got flipped-turned upside down. Paced like that, we'd have Gluna either learn magic or leave the mountain at the end of the first chapter. Instead, we keep going for a monster fight. It means nothing has weight.

We hear that magic is very difficult, but Gluna masters it without as much as a montage, making the warnings ring hollow. We have five star missions treated as issues for anyone but the strongest mages, but we never see anyone struggle to the point where we need to escalate to seven star missions just to pretend something's a challenge. (For a reference to flaws in a good manga, Jujutsu Kaisen's curse ranks were obsoleted almost immediately. When every enemy is a "special" ultimate threat, then there's no reason to care about the rank system at all).

In a traditional montage setup here, we'd have one job shown in full to let the reader know what regular work is like, so the montage has weight. It's like how Edgerunners showed David's crew running a job at the start of episode 7. If you see the heroes in an "ordinary" context once, you can fill in the rest from there, so the montage feels like a full story. If you don't get that setup scene, it's just a sign saying "put story here".

It's not like we look to have anything interesting at the end of the road, either. It's a generic fight-monsters-for-plot-tokens setup with nothing more exciting promised than a generic evil wizard. Why rush if you don't know where you want to go?

I would say that Super Smartphone is a lot more humane than what you seem to be imagining. It shows that you can do a "battle manga of the minds" without going overboard with cynicism.

At this point I'm not even sure that G&G is going to be a fightmanga - it seems possible it's more about Gluna seeing the world and experiencing new things and places, with some fighting thrown in. Not sure how well it's exactly doing at that - we haven't really gotten any detailed descriptions about the places or societies she's visiting like would be done in something like One Piece or Kino's Journey.

It's definitely clumsy so far, but I'm enjoying it for the charming style and characters.
