When League first came out (like, back in beta) Riot told people that matchmaking was designed to "keep everyone at a 50% winrate" or something like that, which started those rumors. But it was just poorly worded and what they meant was it's designed to create matches where each team has an estimated 50% chance to win (which they now say in the faq that i just looked up: https://support-leagueoflegends.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201752954-Matchmaking-and-Autofill ). People just got all conspiratorial about the wording

Blood Bowl 2 is notorious for it, and it has the opposite of its intended effect since certain matchups favor the underdog.

There was a really good interview on gamasutra with the Alien Isolation devs on how they considered the save system as part of the game design iirc, that's one that had specific save points which works really well in horror games

Especially in Fallout 4 where the physics for abandoned vehicles are partially programmed through black magic so they carry a surprisingly high chance of killing you instantly for simply brushing up against them.

This was what debuffed the game from an 8/10 to a 7/10 for me. I loved the art style, sound design, and general ambiance, but I got hard-rear end stuck on the very first combat encounters in the game (the one with the four humans coming through the door behind you, and that long-rear end sneaking poo poo with the goddamn Working Joes). I probably spent 2+ hours to finish 25 minutes of content, and that experience alone frustrated me so loving much that I shifted from slowly taking in the atmosphere to rushing through it as quickly as possible, because 2-3 blind suicide runs through each new area were often much faster than trying to do it skillfully. I enjoyed a lot of it but in retrospect I should've stopped playing after the Infirmary, because the game peaked in that sequence.

the thing to consider with any algorithmic matchmaking is at the end of the day it's based on metrics determined by a bunch of coders crunching a bunch of data that may, or may not, actually have any actual bearing on how good someone is at a videogame

Starwars Battlefront 2 nefariously had designated "Marquee Players" in each match - specifically players with a lot of mtx cosmetics - and matched them against players of vastly lower skill levels. The thought process, as explained by DICE in internal documents, was that those players would show up on so many killcams touting all their cosmetics that the new players would go "whoa I wanna look like them" and spend money

Yes, kind of. IIRC it went to the Marquee Players like 90% of the time - the players who spent the most money. Also had to pay real money to unlock them too, on top of having them randomly assigned in matches. Without paying I think your 'hero' characters were just like, generic Alliance/Empire generals and stuff? (I only played it for like a day, cool game outside of all of the mtx stuff) EA's defense of the game's monetization (specifically their defense of why it takes an unbelievably long time to unlock them without paying) is the most downvoted comment of all time on Reddit, by a significantly huge margin (600k downvotes, vs #2 most downvoted comment with about 80,000) https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsBattlefront/comments/7cff0b/comment/dppum98/?context=3 https://www.reddit.com/r/ListOfComments/wiki/downvoted/ EA posted:The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes. deep dish peat moss fucked around with this message at 05:03 on Sep 27, 2022 |
