one thing that comes to my mind when reading this article, ive been living in china for the entire time xi has been president and as far as i can see, life has materially improved for average people in china to an incredible degree. the median salary in the city i live has more than tripled, public transportation in dozens or maybe hundreds of cities has massively improved, cities are noticeably cleaner, air pollution has been severely reduced, rural infrastructure seems a lot better, there's been the rollout of the high speed train system, etc.

the stuff about local discontent and protests and all that seems like you could make a narrative like that anywhere, idk. sure some people are unhappy with the state of things, but they always have been and there's always been protests in china but it may be easier for people on the internet to see clips of them now.

the other stuff isnt even worth arguing against. like how china isnt capable of competing with tsmc on advanced semiconductors. you need to look at where theyve come from, you cant only compare to contemporaries and claim that a developing middle income country isnt literally the best in the world at some stuff so it's a failure. and of course it's less that xi jinping personally alienated america and pushed us into being rivals, and more that the very existence of china is a threat to the united states and it always will be
