the track is continuing to shift east. even though the winds may be stronger, this is good news. the tampa bay area could dodge the bullet on storm surge. i'm sure there will still be some, but probably several feet lower than a direct hit as was forecast yesterday, especially if they remain on the north and west sides of the storm where the wind will be blowing out to sea instead of pushing water on shore.

Is it just me that feels all of this is getting remarkably little coverage/space in the national zeitgeist when it looks like this could be a truly historically devastating event if just a few things go wrong?

it’s not a record breaking storm like an Irma or Dorian in recent years, and it’s still a day out from landing so there aren’t any good devastation pics yet (except maybe from cuba which american media won’t care about). you’ll see it on the news in a day or two with reporters in whatever town gets the roofs blown off from the direct hit, assuming it does come onshore as a cat 4 storm.

Man I wish there was a flooding map for inland. Obviously it's not going to be anywhere near storm surge heights but my gramps is right on a canal south of Okeechobee (because of course he is, he's an old person in Florida) and I know he hasn't evacuated. At least he's not set to get too much of the wind.
