nah joe biden cares about abortion because it's against his faith as a catholic and he believes it should be illegal, as he clearly stated on the record
the bidens are also now wealthy enough that illegal just means they should try and be more discreet about it

That Ken Burns documentary, "The Vietnam War" should be essential viewing for high schoolers.

The first episode ends with a letter written to President Woodrow Wilson from a young Vietnamese man by the name of Nguyễn Ái Quốc, who was a big fan of the United States and its revolutionary spirit for freedom from colonization. He was in Paris and came out to see President Wilson at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

Years later, Nguyễn Ái Quốc returned to Vietnam and changed his name to Ho Chi Minh.

the Vietnamese declaration of independence in 1945 was explicitly modeled on the American Declaration of Independence to try and make it crystal clear to US decision-makers that the Vietnamese wanted independence from an unjust colonial power. Unfortunately for them, they didn't realize until it was too late that US decision-makers don't give a poo poo about being huge hypocrites

Another fun fact about this was the US only helped after Dien Bien Phu because De Gaul (I believe) said it would be real shame if France fell into the soviet sphere of influence if the US didn't help them maintain their colonial empire. Thanks containment and the Mcnamara state dept, would have been real cool if we just told him to gently caress off instead.

all the ken burns vietnam interviews with americans just makes them look like complete lunatics. you've got the mom whose son died pointlessly triggered by and threatening an antiwar protestor, the troop who shows up in some village and eats a bunch of some womans rice before killing her whole family, more I can't remember, taken uncritically it comes off as pointless but it really just paints the whole contemporary culture as psycho murderers

Yea that physician from Virginia is a piece of poo poo. I like the other Americans though. Particularly the one who still uses a night light. He was straight up honest about how much he hated the Vietnamese. I can't say I would be any different as a marine in that poo poo. It's not his fault they were over there.

The funniest one was the Liberation Front guy who was laughing like a psychopath while reminiscing about hacking up the French collaborators with machetes. He was straight up smiling with a poo poo-eating grin.

i had a class in high school that was just focused on the vietnam war. it ruled outside of all of the horrific crimes against humanity.

even to a dumbass teenager in 2005, it was absolutely undeniable that american “foreign policy” is the most psychotic bullshit. at every step, the people in charge were like HOW CAN WE DIAL THIS UP TO 11????? at every single junction/decision point.

the US literally told Ho Chi Minh to go fly a kite when he presented a completely reasonable and well articulated petition for assistance, then turned around like a decade later and credulously acted insulted. it’s absolutely ridiculous at every single step through history; the US told him to gently caress off, he hosed off, and then the response to him loving off was “HOW DARE HE gently caress OFF IN THE PRESENCE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN STATE???? WE MUST PROTECT THIS POTATO PATCH MASQUERADING AS A FRENCH AIRFIELD!!!!”

I think it's a broader 20th century project to turn away from political economy. It's a peak Midcentury Modern, early 60s belief that the problem of economic scarcity has been solved, independently by like the Kennedy administration and by Soviet socialism, and the real issues are ones of culture, psychology and language. There is some truth in the cultural Marxism theory, but it was shared by the center and right as well, not exclusive to the left. Pretty much everyone had decided by 1961 that political economy was a solved, 19th century problem, and all of the boomers who went to graduate school and became academics were taught that

While that sounds like something I want to believe, when I think of evidence I'd use to argue against it I'd cite the War on Poverty as an acknowledgment of the theory but its failure, dismantlement 20 years later, and the Clinton-era abandonment of any such project as at least tacit acknowledgment that political economy matters. I'd anticipate the rebuttal that that's about economic inequality rather than economic scarcity and the democrats have no interest post-Carter to engage with the idea that market allocation of wealth is not the ideal mechanism to deal with economic inequality.

I feel like if that's true, then there is no distinction between democrats and republicans from an economic perspective (again, I think, a given) then it follows that the only distinguishing feature between the two parties is "progressivism" that is wholly subservient to capital interests. Then you're back to where we started, with identity politics being the only battleground.

At that point I'd say it's just a chicken/egg question, because once the two parties are identical economically and they have been since Clinton (or, if you want to use Halloween Jack's demarcation, with Carter abandoning labor, though I'd say six of one in that case), then identity politics must fill the void because any project that touches material economic conditions is a nonstarter. No matter what the driving force is, the action that stopped Things Being Possible was Clinton accepting republican economics as gospel.

It isn't that the dems weren't shitbags before that, but the current breed of shitbags without a political project, claiming to be the political party of minority identities while doing nothing to help them, and withering away nationwide, began there.
