I'd guess 300 might be more than is necessary, but have you seen how FedEx/UPS/USPS/DHL treat packages? Even huge IT youtubers have had boxes come in completely trashed, in some cases the item itself was actually broke. That is with the item shipped from the manufacturer itself.

If I were buying that mat, along with everything else, I'd for drat sure what to know it got to me in one piece.

I'm not to well-versed when it comes to gaming switches, though, but I'm sure someone else in the thread will be able to help you come up with a few to try out.

It looks like there are kailh switches with lower actuation points, but for a full keyboard worth it's like 50 bucks.

I'm beginning to see why this keyboard was on clearance at best buy.

I ended up getting a NuPhy Air 75. This is so much nicer on my wrists than my old Logitech G610. I was going to go with the Keychron K2, but I've heard horrible things about their customer service, random problems that happen to people after it's out of warranty, shoddy Bluetooth connectivity (that might work fine for a while and then inexplicably die), etc. I never knew I wanted a low-profile keyboard.

So far I've connected this to both my laptop and my phone and it's working flawlessly.

I'm considering getting a new keyboard. I currently have a corsair k70 that I've used for about 7 years. It's old, it's dirty, it probably should be replaced. I've seen the Wooting 60HE, but I have no idea when I'd actually get it due to the backorder. It is a 60% keyboard I believe, and I've always used a full size so that might be an issue, but I'm not sure. Seems odds, but I might love it.

What are some solid keyboards for ~$150? I'm not too interested in building my own. I should add, I'm mainly gaming on it. MMO's, RPG's, etc.

I'd probably get the cheapest mechanical I can find since it'll be miles better than a new membrane keyboard. If you're in the UK (I'm assuming since you're saying quid) there's a couple on amazon.co.uk:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mechanical+keyboard

It's important when you're looking to know that red switches will be linear and light, they just push straight down smoothly. Brown switches have a tiny bump in the travel that's not super noticeable, but it's meant to be similar to a membrane keyboard. Blue switches will click on every keypress and at those prices will probably not sound the best. Also, avoid anything that has a listing of Mechanical-feeling because that's just a way of saying membrane keyboard. Also, most keyboards with lighting at a low price range don't let you customize colors so much as turn it on or off or do modes where the colors make patterns or respond to keypresses, which isn't that great.

The selection isn't great but even knowing that the colors aren't changeable I'd consider this one with red switches (linear):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trust-Gaming-Mechanical-Keyboard-Layout/dp/B093QD65FP/
or this one with Blues (clicky):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mechanical-Keyboard-Detachable-Ergonomic-Programmable/dp/B07QR39DCW/

It's worth noting that while they'll both feel better to type on than membrane keyboards, they're made to a price point which is why the features aren't so great. The Keyboard Company is the UK and they've got a lot more traditional layouts and choices, but I don't think there's much in your price range. Still, worth a look since they've always stocked decent brands and have a fairly good selection.

College Slice
Hello keyboard thread, I'm looking for a new board.

I currently use a drop ctrl with whatever linear switches they came with. The stock stabs were really awful, I've replaced them but I'd love to move to something more compact and nicer in both feel and sound. The ctrl is hot-swap, but I don't really love it and want to try out something different.

I would both game and work on this board, my current setup connects to a macbook pro for work and a pc for everything else via a usb switch, I'd like to keep that kind of thing in place. I'm hesitant to move to something without function keys, I use them a lot both with and without modifiers when working and adding a layer swap modifier seems like it'd be pretty annoying, so I'm looking for 75% type layouts with a function row.

The RK84 seems like it fits the bill, is inexpensive, hotswap, etc. Swapping (and lubing etc) the ctrl's stabs is the only modding I've done, but it was very easy and replacing switches/caps/adding foam/whatever is totally fine, I'd likely swap switches and maybe stabs immediately. I'd use it wired for the usb switch and don't really care about rgb.

Is the RK84 a good bet? Are there other hotswap 75/80 boards I should be looking at? I'd very much prefer something I can buy and receive without waiting around for weeks or months. I am flexible on budget (within reason) and don't mind spending more for something nicer, this is a tool I use a whole lot.

You might find the RK84 a bit of downgrade with its plastic case compared to the drop ctrl's aluminum case. Keychron's V1 would be a good budget option but more comparable to the RK84. There's a lot of GMMK Pro clones too to consider that are under $100. Keychron's Q1 or the GMMK Pro would be more equivalent to the drop ctrl I think since they both have aluminum cases. Both have their pros and cons.

Prices are all over the place for mechanical keyboards, but that doesn't seem too crazy. My price range is usually $100 +/- 50 bucks, depending on what I'm looking at. My Durgod Taurus K320 was around $75 on massdrop but it's a TKL and that was four years ago. Being $120 now for a full size seems in line with everything going up a little.

Interestingly, I think white and full sized will be your biggest choice limitations. There's a lot of cheap RGB boards on amazon that are going to be not great due to having static light colors.

Something like this Velocifire is so-so and pretty cheap, but it's wireless and you'll need to charge it every so often. A client of mine wanted a wireless keyboard and got the black one for them and they've been relatively happy with it, not having used a mechanical keyboard before. Build quality is fine for a $50 keyboard, but I don't know if wireless would be a deal breaker there (also backlighting):
https://smile.amazon.com/Mechanical-Velocifire-Ergonomic-Copywriters-Programmer/dp/B08L8SXD77/

Royal Kludge also make some inexpensive mechanical keyboards. They're often mentioned when someone wants one but doesn't want to pay a lot. This model is full sized and mostly white but has RGB lighting around the sides and under the keys. You can often turn lighting off or just set it to one color you like if it's actually configurable.
https://smile.amazon.com/RK-ROYAL-KLUDGE-Mechanical-Anti-Ghosting/dp/B089GPCZGZ

This other Royal Kludge is a smaller board but they've elminated the arrow and insert cluster to keep the num pad. Has LED backlighting but looks like just the one blue color, and it's technically wireless with the battery onboard but claims to be able to just act wired with the USB-C port:
https://smile.amazon.com/RK-ROYAL-KLUDGE-RK89-Hot-Swappable/dp/B09WMF8JCH/

Cherry themselves have an aluminum and white with RGB board but it's using red switches (which are similar to browns but lack the little bump):
https://smile.amazon.com/Cherry-Mechanical-Keyboard-Aluminum-Switches/dp/B08YRGQSD1
They also just have an old school cherry board. It's maybe a little beige but hard to tell from these photos:
https://smile.amazon.com/CHERRY-Board-Silent-Keyboard-White/dp/B06XQN9J15

Filco has been making really solid keyboards for years and they have a white one that's probably great but it seems like the one with brown switches is $162 while reds are $133, not sure why:
https://smile.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-Cherry-Silent-Keyboard/dp/B01MT0DDAP/

So if none of those struck your fancy it's not a bad idea just to go to mechanicalkeyboards.com and use their filtering tools to look for what you want. They don't always have stuff in stock since they keep out of production stuff in their storefront database but it's a good way to filter.
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com//shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=1

You can also put keycaps on pretty much any board (there are exceptions but usually for smaller boards with different sized keys on the bottom row). Here's some basic white doubleshot PBT ones:
https://smile.amazon.com/Keycaps-Cherry-Profile-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B08XWJNZ5H/

There's probably some other ones I'm missing that other posters might know about, but when you buy a mechanical keyboard you can expect it to last 10+ years unless it's garbage or there's a bad spill into it or something. I got my current one in 2013 and I have some from the 80s around. The main reason to change it up besides failure is to try new switches or go for a different layout, features, or color. When they last that long it's not that weird to spend a hundred bucks or more on one.

I agree with mariooncrack; a Keychron V1 is probably the best bang for your buck in that space, and if you want something more premium the Q1 is a really nice upgrade. They both are amazing out of the box whereas in my opinion the RK needs a bit of love to reach that level. Personally I wouldn't get the GMMK pro since in my opinion the Q1 is better in every way and less expensive (the barebones GMMK is about as expensive as the assembled Q1). It wouldn't be a bad choice, I just think it's still riding its reputation of being the only good custom in stock.

Apparently Keychron is pretty bad to work with if you have any problem so a lot of people recommend you buy on Amazon for their return policy.

I have the Durgod K310 with silent reds that I got for the office that I now just have packed away. It isn’t hot-swap and I did try drop-lubing the switches and stabs. It is an overall great keyboard - sturdy, has a channel for the cord and it’s plugged in the middle. I have it packed away because ultimately it was a Star Destroyer of a board to have on the desk. It has a fantastic numpad but I resorted to have a separate numpad for the few times I need it.

It’s great quality. A solid board. Even some built-in media controls on the function row.

If you don’t want to go through the song and dance of desoldering to replace switches though, avoid it.

I think I only have one left that's in pieces and all the switches desoldered. Eventually I'll put it back together I guess, but I'll have to put new switches in it.

Nowadays I definitely wouldn't spend $100 or more on one. I'd rather put that money towards something nicer if even twice the price.
But I have a rather large collection already and can afford to join group buys and wait for a keyboard. I don't need a keyboard.

I bought the 75% version of that keyboard (with clears) and it's quite nice. Lately, I've bought a few Keychron keyboards since I wanted some that could support wireless if needed (that being said, I've yet to try wireless). I noticed that they have the C2, which is a 100%. They do offer it in white and with brown switches, but it's non-backlit (You didn't mention if you wanted this or not). They're out of the brown switch variant on the Keychron website, but it looks like Amazon has it in stock. Looks like it's also hot swappable switches, so you can try out different types if you wish.

I liked Cherry MX browns on my old non-low-profile keyboard, but the Gateron browns on the low-profile NuPhy Air are kind of mushy. I'm making some typos because the travel time is short and the tactile bump comes too soon. I don't know whether to go for reds or blues for a better typing experience. I'm leaning towards the reds, but that's from testing the lone switch replacement of each color that was included in the box with the keyboard. Anyone have the same problem with low-profile browns? I know browns aren't universally loved in the first place.

Hello Thread,

So I'm dipping my toes into the mechanical keyboard obsession.... I managed to scored a cheap 60% with Cherry MX Browns*.

I like it, but I am not sure if I like it for Ducky One 2 money....

All I know about this current board is that it's using browns, the rest is a mystery. If I like this cheap mystery board enough, would a proper mechanical keyboard be worth the expense?
