Is looting a problem that actually needs to be solved?
If someone wants to try and get some lovely consumer electronics out of the rubble they can go ahead as far as I'm concerned, there are bigger problems to solve here and now.

I heard some of Clay Travis and Buck Sexton today and while it was incredibly lovely and frustrating it also is somehow more refreshing to listen to than Hannity. I think it's because there's two hosts so they're able to bounce off each other, and occasionally are able to talk about something other than the evils of politics, which is more interesting than listening to Hannity drone on and on about how evil the Dems are. It's the same speech, every day, no changes. "Dems can't run on the issues, everything is worse now, all they can do is the same tired playbook."

Today Clay and Buck actually said some things I agreed with though. This is not a matter of "you gotta hand it to them" because they're approaching it from the complete opposite perspective, but they were discussing the possibility of Biden stepping down (or just not running in 2024) and they had differing opinions on it. Buck Sexton was convinced Kamala is absolutely 100% going to be the Dem candidate if Biden is out of the picture because of identity politics. Clay Travis has more my position, which is she would definitely try and she would absolutely run a campaign identical to Hillary's in 2016 (basically "I've been AG, a senator, and Vice President, I am the most qualified candidate, and it's time for a woman to be elected"). But Harris is incredibly unpopular and she wouldn't be able to leverage her race or gender to get the nomination. Because she already tried that in the primaries with the "I was that little girl on that bus" and couldn't get above 2%. Clay said that she would have "enormous media support" on her becoming the first black woman president. I think he's wrong on that, I don't think the "mainstream media" as a whole would be all in on her, but there would certainly be tons of supporters writing opinion pieces about how It's Her Turn on Twitter and possibly even a couple of major newspapers. But ultimately her attempt would fail.

One other thing they said I kind of agreed with was talking about who Clay thinks would be the nominee in 2024 if Biden was out of the picture, which is Gavin Newsom. Buck said that Newsom wouldn't win, and part of that was because he can't replicate Biden's tactics during 2020. That being that Biden was able to position himself as being a friend to and understanding the working man, going to blue collar places in Pennsylvania and Michigan and talking about his support for them as well as being pro union. Obviously the pro union talk was a bunch of bullshit, but regardless, I do think Buck is right about that, and I think Buck is also right that Gavin Newsom would not be able to pull that off.

Again, it was at least more interesting than listening to Hannity sound like a broken record.

e: Man, imagine if a black neighborhood posted a "YOU WILL BE SHOT" sign and how right wing media would be screaming about racism and thugs and Dems enabling such horrific crime dens.
It's worse than this. I want very much to be happy with Diamond Joe and for Harris to be a worthy and likely successor. The problem is every time she speaks she sounds out of touch, entitled, and cold. She has no personality to rely on. She'll never win anything with that kind of public persona.

CHUDs will take every dollar, spit in Biden's face for giving it to them, then crawl over broken glass to vote for the people that worked to prevent it going to them in the first place.

None of that matters to them. Tribal politics determine truth in their world. In and out groups. Their side did the good thing, the other side is bad, and all those "Others" who get the same help they're asking for are wrongbad for asking for it.

My heart hoped that Biden would come out in public and say "DeSantis, you are bag a of poo poo, of course we are sending aid." It's not one of those things that needs to be said behind curtains to maintain some sense of decorum. James Baldwin had the best quote about looting:

quote:

How would you define somebody who smashes in the window of a television store and takes what he wants?

Before I get to that, how would you define somebody who puts a cat where he is and takes all the money out of the ghetto where he makes it? Who is looting whom? Grabbing off the TV set? He doesn’t really want the TV set. He’s saying screw you. It’s just judgment, by the way, on the value of the TV set. He doesn’t want it. He wants to let you know he’s there. The question I’m trying to raise is a very serious question. The mass media-television and all the major news agencies-endlessly use that word “looter”. On television you always see black hands reaching in, you know. And so the American public concludes that these savages are trying to steal everything from us and no one has seriously tried to get where the trouble is. After all, you’re accusing a captive population who has been robbed of everything of looting. I think it’s obscene.

Couldn't they just send federal aid directly to people? I mean, assuming they still have a mailbox or a working internet connection. Or electricity.

Or clean water. Or food.

Probably the free market can sort this out with next to zero functioning infrastructure.

poo poo like this is precisely the role of "big government". I'm sure all these GOP voters will refuse and an all aid as a matter of principal though.

Talk of 'Civil War,' Ignited by Mar-a-Lago Search, Is Flaring Online

quote:

Soon after the FBI searched Donald Trump’s home in Florida for classified documents, online researchers zeroed in on a worrying trend.

Posts on Twitter that mentioned “civil war” had soared nearly 3,000% in just a few hours as Trump’s supporters blasted the action as a provocation. Similar spikes followed, including on Facebook, Reddit, Telegram, Parler, Gab and Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform. Mentions of the phrase more than doubled on radio programs and podcasts, as measured by Critical Mention, a media-tracking firm.

Posts mentioning “civil war” jumped again a few weeks later, after President Joe Biden branded Trump and “MAGA Republicans” a threat to “the very foundations of our republic” in a speech on democracy in Philadelphia.

Now experts are bracing for renewed discussions of civil war, as the Nov. 8 midterm elections approach and political talk grows more urgent and heated.

Polling, social media studies and a rise in threats suggest that a growing number of Americans are anticipating, or even welcoming, the possibility of sustained political violence, researchers studying extremism say. What was once the subject of serious discussion only on the political periphery has migrated closer to the mainstream.

At a Trump rally in Michigan on Saturday night, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said that “Democrats want Republicans dead,” adding that “Joe Biden has declared every freedom-loving American an enemy of the state.” At a recent fundraiser, Michael Flynn, who briefly served as Trump’s national security adviser, said that governors had the power to declare war and that “we’re probably going to see that.”

On Monday, federal prosecutors showed a jury in Washington an encrypted message that Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers armed extremist group, had sent his lieutenants two days after the 2020 presidential election: “We aren’t getting through this without a civil war.”

Experts say the steady patter of bellicose talk has helped normalize the expectation of political violence.

I think it's inherent to the right's specific brand of what we'll for the sake of argument call beliefs. If your core belief is "Look out for #1", you're not going to risk yourself for someone else to carry the ball into the end zone. The revolution only "counts" if you get to enjoy the benefits.
