Suburbs as we know them were largely invented by rail and streetcar companies. Automobile ownership continued a preexisting trend.

Urban sprawl and cookie cutter, featureless exurbs suck but blaming the car for it is revisionist history.

I used to work in an assembly plant and in one area, they build PCBs. Part of this process is the installation of a bus bar which is a 8 inch or so piece of conductive metal that has a very complex, asymmetrical shape with many protrusions which slotted into holes on the PCB.

There is this big machine that you dump (gently as to not bend those previously mentioned protrusions) a box full of dozens of these into and there was a spiral track going from the bottom (where you filled it) to the top into the machine that pressed them into the PCB. This whole machine vibrated and these bus bars vibrated onto the track and proceeded all in an orderly line up this spiral track. We called this machine The Rumbler and it always felt like magic. (until it jams the gently caress up and you gotta dig out a bunch of them)

I used to be the IT manager for a civil engineering firm, and one day I had to report a phone as missing to a small mobile provider. They kept insisting that if I knew where it was, which technically I did, that I needed to retrieve it before they would process a replacement claim.

Somehow, “it belonged to an inspector, except it fell out of his pocket, and it’s now forever entombed under several layers of gravel and tarmac beneath state highway 93,” was not acceptable as “irretrievable.”

It's funny when you think about how it takes a factory to build the parts for another factory to build the parts for another factory and so on, basically factories all the way to down to some dude digging dirt out of the ground.

I can imagine that even if you had all our current knowledge it would still take a good chunk of a millennium to reach our current level of technology if you had to start again from scratch.

That's how my great uncle died around 2006, except it was under an open top John Deere 3010 with a bushhog deck. He was mowing in a ditch when he hit a sandy patch, wheel on the low side sunk and the whole thing rolled right on top of him. No safety bar or cage, tractor was built in the 50s iirc.

The tractor was still in use for another decade after pulling it off him. The ditch is now mowed with a 4430 with a cab/cage. The sandy spot is well marked now and cut with a large weed whacker.
