I hate to say anything positive about Facebook, but drat I tried out a Quest 2 recently and drat the whole "no wires" thing is sweet. An acquaintance has a haptic feedback vest/wrist things we played a few games with it. Seriously cool. I had no idea just anyone could buy those for relatively low cost already.

AirLink/wireless Virtual Desktop is seriously a game changer and it's a shame that Quest is really the closest thing you can get (in america) to that without having to spend a shitton on a vive+bespoke hardware. I tried VR for the first time with a Vive and it's neat but wrangling cables takes you out of it or forces you to play with cables in mind. It's way easier to get lost in something in VR with no wires.

I own an Index and I don't necessarily find the wires that big of a deal just because I wouldn't walk around my living room while I play regardless. But the sheer portability it offers is super cool in addition to not needing a good computer to power it.

It’s a good implementation, too. Has 4-5-6x max odds which is what most big casinos use. (I’ve seen a lot of online casinos, even play money ones, that screw the player with like 3x max). I’ve been at a couple tables now where there were people who knew how to play helping others understand. And of course, I lost a shitload last night so it definitely feels accurate… :smith:

I recently upgraded the PC in my virtual pinball cabinet and realized hey I can try out some games on VRPC now now that I actually have a capable system.

Are there any must try games that could only be played via airlink/cable on the Quest 2?

Seconding Alyx. Doesn’t matter what genre of game you enjoy, Alyx is a must play.

Other than that, it’s mostly up to genre preference.

Tetris Effect and Rez Infinite are psychedelic as hell with maxed out graphics. They’re both available as Quest native but the overall experience is night and day vs PCVR.

Outer Wilds with the NomaiVR mod is straight up the best exploration/puzzle game I’ve played since Riven. Would recommend it even if you’re not into Myst-type stuff, it’s honestly one of the best games of the past 5 years if not decade.

Then you have WRPG games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 - which are amazing IF you feel like dealing with modpacks and troubleshooting. Unmodded they’re not really worth buying, especially FO4.

Edit: also sim games in general. MS Flight Sim 2020 is nuts in VR, Euro/American Truck Sim (especially if you have a wheel), space “sims” like Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky, various car racing games, etc.

If you've ever played Half Life 2 you should check out the new VR mod for it on Steam. It's fantastic and will give you a new appreciation for the game.

If you're asking about games that are quest only, Echo Arena is the big one.

How does the Quest 2 leverage a PC if used?

Does the Quest leverage your PC horsepower for all apps and games? Only games installed on the actual PC? Can you install Quest App Store games on a desktop, or are those headset only?

I'm contemplating building a new gaming rig and the timing will coincide with the new Quest headset announcement, so I'm not sure if I should get excited about the possibilities or not.

when hooked to a PC the Quest 2 basically just acts as a PC VR headset for PC VR games. It doesn't use the PC to play any of the standalone quest games or enhance them.

We don't know the specs of the Q3 yet but it might be a stellar standalone.
For PCVR, it's just a monitor, essentially. Your PC does all the work.

The upcoming headset is rumored to be in the $1500 ballpark so, unless you’re rich as gently caress and don’t mind doubling the spend on a new gaming rig, I’d just grab a Quest 2 from Best Buy regardless of what gets announced.

Quest Pro’s upgrades over the 2 from a gaming standpoint will be relatively minor considering it’s more than 3x the price. Target market is business and VR enthusiasts.

Quest 3 is next year sometime and will have better optics and SoC than the Pro while being more in line with the 2’s pricing.

Get Zaccaria Pinball, stand in front of your pinball cabinet and recenter your view, and play virtual pinball in VR hanging on to your real virtual pinball table.

It's all good until you get frustrated trying to nudge and failing.

Yeah nothing compatible. Talk with Microsoft. PC, PSVR2 for PS5 for next year, or standalone.
What computer do you have?

Oh my computer can handle it, no problem. She probably just wants to play the dumb poo poo she sees achievement hunter playing so the standalone can probably handle that just fine.

Quest 2 works standalone and can wirelessly connect to your PC to play those games too. That's probably the best bet here.

The justification is they've subsidized their hardware SO MUCH that now they can't switch to charging actual real amounts so they have to try to make a "enterprise hardware" sku, put an actual realistic price on it, and hope people buy it anyway.

I kind of think Meta has the right approach in making the face and eye tracking available on a more expensive headset (essentially making it optional) but I have to wonder how those features will end up implemented and supported. I'd like face and eye tracking to work in eg VRChat and everything else, but the expensive headsets are already going to be a niche of a niche, what's support going to look like for those features?

If the rumored 1500$ price is true. That would make the quest pro actually 2-3 times cheaper than their competitors hololens and magicleap.

Enterprise level gear is priced that way because they have to provide enterprise level support behind it.

I think the $1500 will sell better to consumers than some people assume it will. Same goes for the new $1600 GPU from NVIDIA.

I'd assume support isn't going to be great initially, but long term it'll depend on how useful those features end up being and how easy they are to implement. Think of these expensive business headsets as a public alpha for potential future consumer implementations. They'll be available to those who want to jump in early and things will probably be learned about how to use these technologies best.

If the major game engines get good support where these features can be easily enabled and methods are provided for developers who can't afford the latest headsets to still simulate the inputs and test that their game handles it reasonably, support might become surprisingly good in short order.

I googled a bit and the Pico 4 should start shipping on October 18th. If it turns out to work nicely for MSFS, DCS, and other sims that require a fair bit of visual detail, I'm going to be really tempted.
