Tiny Timbs posted:The Starship Troopers RTS was fun. I wish it had gotten some more polish and more interesting variation in the unit designs but it has a nice, lengthy campaign with fun levels. I should note that modding is also extremely easy to do! Changing unit abilities is as simple as editing values. Apparently there's a Master of Magic remake coming out soon? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Luvd5rgQs0E Looks extremely similar to the original but with an updated UI/QOL and with hexes. Like all the way down to the numbers it's the same. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Mordja posted:Neat, looks like COH3 will be launching with mod tools, a real rarity these days. Thanks for bringing up COH3, I was about to do that myself. I'm a developer on Europe In Ruins, an overhaul mod for COH1 that adds persistent unit veterancy across months-long MMO RTS campaigns, and an insane amount of Company customization. What we really need from Relic is the ability to inject SCAR code into the game, so we can get our custom doctrines and persistent unit vet into the game. One of our regular players is a dev at Relic, so they're aware of what we need and are working on it, but it's a matter of how comprehensive Relic wants to make their modding tools, and long it'll take Relic to actually release them. Fingers crossed! Relic has also been listening to community feedback, and is iterating on the beta's (currently awful) UI. From this: To this: Certainly an improvement, but I don't understand why they're trying to create an entirely new UI (and new aesthetic) when they already have the excellence of COH1's UI to iterate upon. I submitted a mock-up, here's what I suggested: And provided some context to help visualize it a bit: I prefer the QWER-grid unit commands to be on the left, but I also think making them left/right swappable is an important option to provide.

thank god they are working on the UI, i'm honestly surprised they are taking that feedback. but really they should just roll it all back to coh2, they reinvented the wheel on so much poo poo

Howdy Goons. I've been sort of eyeing those old-school hex based wargames on PC for years, but never knew where to start. What's a good beginner/newbie level wargame that's out there? Any recommendations?

Look for me on Discord, I'm Illegal_Carrot, the Community Manager for EIR. https://discord.gg/J96DekM There used to be a decent contingent of goons back in the day, when EIR was more popular. Hopefully we can bring that back. The game's busiest during EU day / US evening times, and can be a little dead outside of that. Hit me up any time you'd like to play, or most of the regulars in Discord are pretty friendly and can help you out.

Panzer general is generally considered a good starting point. Unity of Command 1 is a more recent contender for best starting point.

Panzer Corps 2 is the classic. There are lots of modules for that too. Unity of Command 1 is better than 2 for noobs. 1 keeps things simpler.

Distant Worlds 2 question: is this game supposed to be frame-locked at 60fps? And if not, how do I get rid of that? I've got no vsync on (gsync monitor) and my monitor is a 165hz. And i'm not running any frame limiters. I've switched between DX11 and Vulkan renderers and it runs the same.

What's a good beginner/newbie level wargame that's out there? Any recommendations? Unity of Command 2 is pretty fun and not super grognardy. On the easier difficulties you get more time/prestige (basically your money to buy stuff) and can ramp up from there. If you really like it you can pick up the multiple DLCs that have come out, but to be honest the base game is fun enough. Edit: V for Vegas posted:Order of Battle is very good. I find UoC1 to be a bit *too* easy as once you realize none of your units/specialist steps carry over you basically can suicide your units to win a scenario and then have them all nice and healthy the next. UoC2 also I think has a few more QoL improvements that allows you to better plan your unit moves/attacks. I still find UoC1 to be fun though! It's a WWI strategy game, so lots of trench war and solid lines, but the occasionally opening for a flank attack or supply line raid in the East to keep things exciting.

Thanks for the recommendations yall! As a side note: I’ve been putting some more hours into Distant Worlds 2, and I’m loving it! They streamlined all the right stuff without removing really any of the game’s depth from Universe. I’m really hoping this game gets a lot of good expansion packs.
