That show is surprisingly good, but the farm store and whatever cafe he's dreamt up here must be an astounding pain in the balls for anyone who lives within about 20 miles of it, these tiny country lanes that are the only way to get to some places aren't supposed to have 2 hour parking tailbacks on them.
Also people with impractical cars and/or who don’t know the width of their vehicle. One nervous driver on those lanes can cause problems for miles.

It was great driving through those lanes with a family member from London.

I will say in the Midwest a lot of farms have embraced this commercialism in the form of theme parks / restaurants as a matter of staying afloat. People will complain but the reality is a lot of these farms either go this route or shut down and become subdivisions or industrial parks.

Yup. I love laughing at the idiots who get mad no matter what happens with farmland.

It stays a regular farm: Oh no, there's noise / dust / smells from a farm!
It becomes agritainment: Oh no, there's noise / dust / smells from a farm, and people!
It becomes more tract housing or warehouses: Oh no, you've ruined my perfect view!

If my memory isn't more compromised than usual, their shop opening during the Clarkson farm series caused immense pileups so I'm expecting a lot of hate from the town HOA towards any kind of expansions.

I agree, it definitely sounds like the town is just annoyed by how much attention Clarkson is bringing to the town. These people are likely driving in, visiting Clarkson's farm, then leaving and not patronizing any other local businesses because they went specifically to see the farm. That's a lot of traffic and congestion for something that only benefits Clarkson. So the council will do everything they can to screw him over because he's "ruining" their town.

They also told him "no, you can't do that" twice and he went and did it anyway.

The vague law that says his set up “by reason of its nature, scale and siting is unsustainable and incompatible with its open countryside location”? Because that seems pretty subjective. The planning commission rejections being ignored is definitely an issue, but the reasoning for the rejections is dumb and seems frivolous.

This seems like a set up where they're both bad and Clarkson is doing the American thing where he's just daring them to sue him and prove that their rejections weren't frivolous.

I think judging the merits of either side's case would require knowing exactly what's been filed and what the responses are. Is this public? Is the entirety of the law itself even public? I've learned not to assume that's the case even for other states so I have no idea how the Brits handle things.

It's not like it's unreasonable to imagine that Jeremy Clarkson is being a stubborn poo poo and pushing ahead with something he knows isn't allowed because he wants to and thinks he can get away with it.

It's also not unreasonable to imagine that the local planning commission is full of NIMBYs who don't want anything to change that inconveniences them.

It's also not unreasonable to imagine that the rules being applied are simply badly designed and the commission is applying them to the best of their ability.

The most likely answer is that some combination of all three elements are in play here, and I would place my bets leaning heavy on the first two but what the balance is between those I think we need more information to really be able to judge.

I hate defending Clarkson but I agree with the above thing solely on the thing that was mentioned on Clarkson's Farm S1.

Selective harvest is something that you are expected to do, when you own forest, especially if it is planted. It helps with the biodiversity to take place, and makes it healthier. But because Jeremy Clarkson did it, he got shat upon by Twitter crowd on "destroying the nature by cutting the woods".

I have no problem seeing similar things going on here, NIMBYs and activists are giving him cold shoulder and doing legal obstructions after another just because he is Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear. If it was any other local farm owner from the local Rotary or Lions club or so, they'd be awarding him for tourism initiative for the county.

Yeah but the local Lions club doesn't have 7 and a half million twitter followers. The Cotswolds also really don't need his help with tourism, they just prefer when 7 and a half million twitter followers don't show up and sit on the road waiting to park in the 8 parking spots he has on his lot.

But to use parking as an example, it's not unheard of for these things to go:

"You can't do this, you don't have enough parking, traffic is backing up on the roads."

"OK, can I build more parking then?"

"No."

I also find it funny portraying Clarkson as the fancy rich guy swinging his dick around the quaint local village for local people, when from what I know of the Cotswolds, the place is full of people with vastly more wealth and influence.

Well imagine if you put in a WalMart right next to the Lord of the Rings set in NZ, on the assumption that Hobbiton™ wants cheap plastic toys more than it wants to remain Hobbiton™. That's the Cotswolds.

It's a beautiful location that is alluring because it's old-worldly and nothing about the infrastructure is at all suited to large scale commercial endeavours. This is the goat track that leads to his farm, which is 15 miles on meandering country roads from any motorway.

Jeremy could have 5000 parking spaces and it'd still cause traffic nightmares for everyone else who isn't Jeremy Clarkson. A lot of people that live there are well off but it's hardly Dubai or Monaco or something, it's not even Los Angeles, it's just within sort-of-commuting range of That London so footballers and city bankers and TV figures who don't have to go in every day end up living there.

Oh that's awesome. I couldn't find any information on if they used the same chassis after I saw a bunch of Colorado's when I was here in 2020. Is the Cab also the same? I wonder if it has all the mounting points for the 4JJ as well then.

Cab is the same, far as I can tell you'd need the tray (tailights are different shape), tailgate, front fenders, headlights, hood, grille, bumper, and maybe some of the front end supports. US frame has some changes according to wiki but probably nothing you can't over come. I dunno if I'd bother with the engine given you can get one with a federalised diesel engine anyway. Think of it like the Pontiac GTO/G8/Chevy SS guys who bring over the Holden bits.

Perhaps, but using a non-federalized engine is technically completely illegal under federal law, and more realistically it's going to make the truck completely unregisterable anywhere that does any emissions inspections.

That was a fantastic roadtrip, and especially fine tuned for me.

My first car was a compact pick-up, and I've always wanted to travel SE Asia. I never knew about the truck culture in Thailand though, it seems wonderful. Also, I've always wanted an E30 to hoon. Seeing Harris (and especially his passenger) having a blast throwing that chopped E30 around that fantastic looking circuit was great. A finicky E30 and workhorse pick-up ultimately do not make sense together though.

And last but not least, the Formula Hmong folk kart racing reminded me so much of a sort of makeshift kart racing that took over my neighbourhood block one summer when I was a kid...

Our block was long with an alley way to bisect it, and the whole block was on a grade such that the alley was half a decent down hill, and half a flat run away at the bottom, with a slightly recessed round drain in the middle where it transitioned.

It started as just myself and a couple of the other kids at one end of the street. I don't remember where the idea came from or who started it, but we started to build makeshift karts out of whatever we could find in our dads' garages. I'm talking like dollies/hand trucks and skateboards strapped to each other with bungee cords. Once we had a couple karts built for ourselves, we started to race them on the slight downhill on the street just in front of our houses.

For some reason this started to spread, and all the kids around the same age on the street started to get into it too. Dads would help their kids build the most ridiculous death traps of whatever they had on hand, then they'd strap their kids with hockey and roller blade pads, and send them on their way to get a rush from gravity.

Near the end of the summer, this culminated in a grand prix of sorts. The whole block organized a big race of the kids' karts. Naturally, the race would be held at the alley way.

I barely remember race day, but I remember all the kids' parents and younger siblings coming out to cheer on their kid and their death kart, and the early dusk light of the evening. It was only a few of us, but it's not like the alley was that wide anyways.

We all let off at the top of the hill at the start of the alley. It was pretty neck and neck as we all plummeted down the hill, but when we got to the bottom of the hill, things got more hectic. I remember one kid in the middle of the starting line getting their kart obliterated by the drain in the middle. I remember myself getting clipped and careening into the wall on the far side just at the bottom of the hill. I'm pretty sure something similar happened on the other far side. And I'm pretty sure the one kart that did survive to the bottom, didn't have enough energy to make it to the proposed finish line, which was the very end of the bottom of the alley way, so they used their feet to kick themselves most of the way along the bottom to cross the line.

That's what I expected from an athlete though, and despite the genteel image of sinking beers and tea breaks, cricketers are real athletes and Flintoff was one of the best all-rounders (batsman/bowler/fielder) in the game, with a 90mph fast ball. You don't get to captain England without being pretty drat good!

Flintoff vs Ponting in 2005 is the stuff of dreams. Ponting (then Australian captain) later described it as the best over he ever faced.

Freddie Flintoff airlifted to hospital after crash during Top Gear filming

quote:

Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff has been taken to hospital after a high-speed crash while filming the latest series of Top Gear.

The former England cricket captain turned broadcaster was taking part in a shoot at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey on Tuesday, which has featured regularly in the BBC show since 2002.

The 45-year-old was taken to hospital by air ambulance. It is understood Flintoff’s injuries are “not life-threatening”, according to the Sun, which first reported the story. Filming has been postponed, it said.

A BBC spokesperson said: “Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning – with crew medics attending the scene immediately.

“He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course.”

Basically he lured the batsman in to his own demise. His first balls were fast and swung in - that is, from the bowlers point of view, the ball hit the wicket and bounced to the right, towards the batsman and the wicket. Closer each time. However on the final ball, he swung it out, in the other direction, away from the batsman, but the batsman was expecting more of the same, so he swung at it, caught the ball on the edge of his bat, off to the catch, that's his day done.
