I will probably just continue the story as far as I can go. My friend told me it gets much better once I get out of the vanilla game, so I will keep pushing on.

"better" depends on which parts aren't jiving. ARR's main issues are that the jobs feel sparse in their available tools and since it's doing worldbuilding for the whole continent over 50 levels some of the pacing can feel uneven, especially if you're trying to push to where it "gets good". Both of those pick up later, but the nature of the game doesn't change so if, say, you don't like how it's MSQ story-heavy that stays the same even if things are written for a 10-level story arc later.

ARR's story is structured as little 5-level vignettes with a rotating cast who are gone by the next vignette. In HW and beyond, it's a proper narrative running through the entire expansion. The quality does increase as well but the biggest difference is just that they didn't need to chop it into tiny little independent segments in order to parallelize the writing process to get it out the door in time

MSQ patch quests generally don't give xp or give very little.

To clarify what this means for newbies confused by terminology, like I was when starting out:

When someone refers to "X.0" quests / MSQ (4.0, 6.0, etc) they are referring to the expansion's quests proper. 1.0 was the initial release of the game that is no longer available. 2.0 is the ARR story. 3.0 is Heavensward, 4.0 is Stormblood, 5.0 is Shadowbringers, and 6.0 is Endwalker.

"Patch quests" refers to the stories / MSQ quests in-between the major expansions. Post-ARR stuff (the quests after first seeing ARR credits and before starting HW) is "2.X", Post-HW quests before starting StB is "3.X" etc. You can tell which specific part you're in by paying attention to achievements, and because major story beats tend to ebb and flow with these patches. You'll get an achievement after completing the first few post-ARR quests - thus marking you as done with 2.1 and headed into 2.2.

How do you tell what specific patch quest you're on if you haven't been paying attention to achievements or forget? Or if you're looking back and forget which specific part of the story is 4.2 vs 4.3? lmao good luck, you don't, just google it or ask for help.

The ARR postgame MSQ is better than ARR proper, which is honestly pretty dire even in the modern trimmed-down format. The problem is people try to rush through trying to get to "the good stuff" in HW when 2.x is an episodic thing where a lot of in-story time passes between most of the patches. The lack of character progression for hours and hours makes it frustrating even though the narrative/dungeons/trials are way better.

It's more "I just came off 50 levels of ARR vignettes, and I need to do MORE?" The expansion content feels way more digestible to someone going from 1-90 because you have 10 levels of x.0 quests and then the epilogue. Where as 1-50 feels like a long time, and thus makes the epilogue feel like padding as opposed to wrapping up the story.

There's probably a more elegant and precise way to post this, but that is how I felt when I got there. I was looking forward to getting into Ishgard partially because I took a break from MSQ to level crafting, and needed to head that way for my gathering, and finding out that I had a bunch more ARR MSQ to do after the credits rolled left me feeling sour.

I didn't feel remotely the same coming out of HW/StB/ShB because I'd spent comparatively less time in a more focused story and it was clear the MSQ was wrapping up the tale and preparing for the next story.

Pray return to the Waking Sands is a meme for a reason.

Saya's adventures continue! Part VI.

Previous Posts:
Part 1: Working through the City-State MSQ and Arcanist Job Quests
Part 2: Side-Quests and Starting off with the Pointy End of the Stick (Beginning Lancer)
Part 3: Saya gets dumped and so heads to the Waking Sands to continue the MSQ
Part 4: Finishing Lancer, starting BLM/Thaumautaruge.
Part 5: Started & Finished Pugilist, Finished Thaumautaruge

For today's recap of Saya's Eorzian Adventures we visit the Archery guild!

After talking to some of the local Miqote who give me side quests which Saya does out of the goodness of her heart, she meet the lovely Gridanian Retainer Vocate, and it turns out I cannot have a retainer on a free trial and I have so much junk in my inventory :(

She actually does some ~foreshadowing~ about how unwelcoming Gridanian Elezen are (allegedly) towards outsiders. I had thought that for Elves the Gridanian Elezen seemed rather unusually friendly for fantasy elves.

That's a, that's a nice outfit.

I end up killing a dude in self-defence (I swear!)

Who actually leads into a fairly deep and tragic story moment for this lady :stare:

Hello! Are you here to soothe my wounded heart :)

She seems to only have eyes for another :(

The lady in charge of the archery guild is not here for anyone's poo poo. She's silently judging, and you come up short.

But eventually she comes around and starts praising Saya who totally stoically accepts it as she will.

I'm sent on a dangerous mission to take care of some Ixali scouts, but some dude just Leeroy Jenkins his way into the fight.

And unless I'm mistaken this dude just never comes up again.

I finally meet a dude who I can only describe accurately as this motherfucker.

A dude so racist even our silent protagonist actually emotes in conversion with disapproval.

We go on the hunt for a poacher that apparently absolutely bamboozled a watchman that "totally wasn't me" Silvaire.

"Now whatever you do Saya, don't let her charms get to you."
"I'm not going to flirt with her."
*Sees Pawah Mujuuk*
"Oh no"

:sweatdrop:

She gets away, saying something very cliche like, "I will remember this!" :argh:

Silvaire's constant belittling and casual racism towards Leih finally gets to be too much for her.

The infighting gets bad enough that even our protagonist has to say something.

And by something I mean, ignore the arguing to say the first thing on her mind:

"Guys I can fix her."
Says woman who is worse.

Drama reaches a peak when Leih says she's going to run away from home D:

But on the other hand she seems to have something to say to me before she does so, what could it be...?

!!!

Maybe she wants me to run away with her!?

*zoomies intensifies*

But at the scene we are ambushed by the Lily Bandits, weird that they just steal flowers...?

Saya thoroughly enjoying being white knighted for a change of pace.

In the end, Leih offers herself up as tribute, as she feels that she'll never truly belong in Gridania or the Archery ClubGuild. :(

The choice presented should really look like this when we're asked whether to say we're willing to let her go or ask her to stay:

Pawah tells us off and leaves after a short scuffle but Saya can read between the lines. :hai:

But in all seriousness Leih is fed up by Silvaire's constant bullying and asks why I put up with it.

Saya: "I hear it builds character. :shobon:"

Which to be honest is a good question, probably that so far aside from what I saw happened to Foulques in
the Lancer's guild Saya has honestly not experienced a lot of Gridanian bigotry first hand aside from Silvaire.

I think similarly to the Lancer quest line this storyline would be a little more interesting if Gridanian's were
just more obviously assholes until after you do some quests to help out.

Leih puts my mettle to the test, to determine if sticking it out really did build character.

And Saya strikes her down without mercy. Gotta take your lumps kido.

Is she learning?

She's learning!

That the best way to deal with a hostile work environment is not to run away to join up with
the cute catgirl bandits who seem like they will appreciate you for who you are and just to deal with it and grow a thicker skin!

She has learned my lessons well. :patriot:

I go off back to Costa de Sol to do some side quest shenanigans to help out this rich lalafel I'm totally not jealous of.

Exhibit A of Proof That I am Not Mad Or Jealous.

Exhibit B.

She's helping me find more evidence that I Am Not Mad.

We think the evidence might be here.

So Not Mad I fire off what remains of my straightness to gently caress Cancer.

The battle lasts into the night.

Other people join into the fray hoping to defeat cancer.

After the battle we hung out a little, we weren't able to beat cancer this time but in a great lesson of companionship with me fellow adventurers
we won't give up!

Back at Gridania Silvaire is having an argument with Archery Boss Lady.

"Look, I wasn't being racist, I was just stating facts. See here's some statistics which will surely prove... :words:"

It actually does turn out that Silvaire is a tsundere with a specific tell when he's at his most tsundere. D'awww. Maybe he thinks we're some of the good ones!

Silvaire eventually fesses up the truth, he was bamboozled by Pawah's miqote charms! No subtext here whatsoever!

He runs off and me and Leih give chase because he may be a racist, a liar, a pig, an idiot, a racist, but he is NOT a porn star!

We have a heart to heart, and Leih says what's on her mind that sounds weirdly like a confession.

Saya's just like :munch:

But gasp! Another ambush!

Someone knows the theme of this arc.

That negging works! :downs:

But we manage to pull the rug out from under her although it seems like Silvaire still hasn't learned to let it go. :jerkbag:

And we got what we wanted all along, Silvaire's begrudging tolerance. :unsmith:

Tune in next time where I continue the MSQ on my Arcanist/Summoner!

I am ever so gradually building up a back log, I'll try to trim these down a bit since they're kinda long.

I think their current stance is that those systems (they used to have one for picking what stat you raised at level up) end up doing more harm than good, because there will always be an objectively correct choice, and it encourages certain "you're playing your job wrong" arguments. It doesn't add any tactical depth for the high-end players because they'll just math out what gives you the best NUMBERS, and for the more casual players, it ends up creating problems of increasing the learning curve and potentially having trap options.

Jobs are the same for everyone, they've never talked about having talent trees or anything like that. You used to get bonus stat points that you got to assign wherever you want, but they did away with that several expansions ago.

It's more about playing things well in the moment than picking out the best talents for your own unique way to play. Jobs have like a set game plan, with lots of room for optimization. High end raids are puzzles to be solved, which you then perform like a synchronized dance. That's just the kind of game it is.

Sometimes you get new buttons, but usually if you look at your Traits in Actions&Traits, you'll see a lot of them are "This skill now does more damage" or "turns this skill into this skill II" with an occasional foray into "This skill gets more charges"

The Great Twist
Another big thing they do is just cull skills. Every expansion some transform, and some get outright deleted.

At certain points jobs will need to be overhauled again to make them more cohesive, but they don't just add skills ad infinitum.

Hyper Inferno

One example of they turn buttons into fancier buttons but in differing ways is how they handled removing Largesse and Rouse on healers. They just baked the healing potency buff into other temporary buffs on the jobs, but with some additional job specific flavor. Temperance and Neutral Sect for WHM/AST basically replaced Largesse in ShB and had some extra stuff too.

Rouse used to be a pet buff, but that was essentially replaced with Summon Seraph. Mechanically they work a little bit differently, but functionally it's still the same idea (temporary buff to pet).

But besides that, there's also a whole slew of buttons that most people probably don't really miss except for maybe some of the nifty animations on them. The execute abilities (Misery's End, Mercy Stroke, Ageha) are one set for example.

GloomMouse posted:

Yeah, that's pretty much how the game is designed. There's intentionally not a lot of experimentation available in how you play your job, and rotations are (mostly, Black Mage can get weird for occasional small gains) carved in stone by developer fiat. The high end raid content is then pretty carefully built and timed around how the jobs function, and the bleeding-edge world first nerd optimization is around which Caster Job your Caster Main(s) happen to bring.

That said, Squeenix do add talent-like things in the side content. Blue Mage is basically all build customization as you have no baseline skills, learn 100+ abilities from monsters and slot 24 of them. You're expected to set your loadout for what you're doing. The main Blue Mage content is the Masked Carnivale, which is a series of puzzle-y solo fights. There are also achievements (and a mount) for all Blue Mage raiding, where you replace the usual 8 man with 8 Blue Mages loaded up for tanking, healing, dps, etc.

A less extreme version is the old school MMO throwback areas of Eureka and Bozja at level 70 and 80, respectively. There you pick up extra abilities as loot, often classic FF stuff, and you can slot two of them as part of your build. For instance, you might give yourself Reflect and Death for solo grinding, or Seraph Strike and Arise for raiding Delubrum Reginae Savage on a healer.

I think since the LP'er (Playframe) I've been following is focused on the MSQ and MSQ-related side content (Crystal Tower, etc), he hasn't done any of the Job/Class quest lines aside from Dragoon, so since basically all of the class/job quests and the side quests are all essentially new/fresh content for me I'm somewhat more excited to go 100% completionist on everything other than the MSQ right now. :D

Without any spoilers, the main things that change in HW if you’re wondering how it gets better are:

- the story gets a lot more nuanced. ARR has very obvious good guys and bad guys, HW is a story about a war that’s gone on for a long time and some people want it to end, some people want it only to end with the complete subjugation or annihilation of the other side, and some want it to keep going either because they benefit from the way things are or because they just can’t let go.

- Characters themselves get more complex. Your allies start accompanying you more on quests rather than hanging at the Waking Sands or wherever, one character in particular gets a lot of sorely needed development, and in general the dialogue’s better and the VA has improved (largely because they’re now given direction.)

-the flow of your journey from one place to another is much smoother, you uncover zones as you go and some aren’t open to you until the MSQ takes you there. It’s not being sent back and forth all herky-jerky as in ARR. The zones themselves are also generally really cool, there’s this cohesive atmosphere and mood that reflects the themes of the story.

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?
Everybody says "FF14 gets better as it goes" and for once the group mantra is entirely true, the highs of finishing HW entirely justified sloggy bits of ARR for me and then it's like "there's more patch content and 3 more expacs and the quality steadily rises" and my eyes bug outta my skull.

Also post HW is when you start getting these absurdly meaty optional raid storylines that are as good as the main stuff. There is a ridiculous amount of content for the new player that doesn't feel like missing the boat too much like how WoW shotguns you to level cap and the Current Patch Gear Zone as fast as possible.

I just finished ARR last night and to be honest I ended up really liking it by the end, the story starts slow and it's definitely simple but it gave me enough motivation to enjoy the final sequences. Some of those end challenges are pretty interesting and tough, too!

So now that I'm onto 2.x content and then HW, mind explaining raiding in FFXIV to me? The only game I've raided in before is Destiny, where the raid teams are much smaller but basically require voice chat to survive. Is the Raid Finder a good way to do that? Are people generally chill towards healers who are new to the game and still learning? Should I just skip the ARR raiding scene and go straight to HW?
