I don't get this at all for Vancouver. Dickinson had a nonzero chance of bouncing back, and Vancouver has a glut of 6th D.

I guess their injury situation complicated the cap gymnastics and there's some higher level reason they badly needed 1.3m of space right now.

I guess they are full on centre though. Eh. Dammit Benning.

having dickinson on your roster is worth a 3rd round pick but NOT having dickinson on your roster is worth a 2nd

if only there were someway to exploit this arbitrage opportunity

they were in danger of not being able to ice a full roster

with dickinson on the roster (or buried in the ahl, it doesn't really matter for our purposes) and myers, boeser and mikheyev all in the 'not healthy enough to play, not injured enough to ltir' zone they could only put together a roster of 21 players who could actually skate. by swapping dickinson for stillman they can carry a proper 23 man roster and even claim someone (kovacevic) off waivers

they could have also done all this without having to pay to dump dickinson if they hadn't given 20 mil to empty net specialist mikheyev over the summer

What garbage asset management. They had six months to figure out the cap and this is what they come up with? They'd have been able to see if Dickenson could bounce back if they'd made even one slightly tough decision in the summer, but they didn't and so it's another massive asset to dump a low end contract.

Stillman isn't even a right handed shot.

I have to believe he's on waivers for reassignment and not cause they think he's butt. AFAIK he's still slated to be the started for the Firebirds (assuming he doesn't get claimed in which case I'll laugh my rear end off at the Kraken for losing two goalies to waivers).

He’s had injuries which have clearly held him back. He’s not top quality, but I always thought he was better than Zadorov but Sutter likes that Zadorov will get himself out of position to do the big hits, so there hasn’t been a chance for Valimaki to grow at the NHL level. It would be worth taking a chance on him.

23 seems young enough that someone should probably take a chance on a former 1st rounder just on principle. What's the worst that could happen for a poo poo team like Arizona/Chicago?

If a waiver pickup can singlehandedly drag one of those poo poo rear end teams out of the basement, I don't think they'd complain too much about getting a 23 year old star for free.

So the Pens I think are still like 700k over even if Friedman clears/gets claimed. Seems like POJ is getting traded or Smith is starting the season in WBS. Or some other unexpected trade happens.

Wouldn't be a huge fan of Smith having to start in WBS. He's looked pretty solid in camp, and better than POJ.

Since the regular season has started, I'll once again plug my Scoreboard Watching toy, for when checking a score is too boring but watching an actual game VOD is too expensive. Since the playoffs I've added a fast-forward button and a power play clock that is hopefully accurate.

For the Canucks to actually be contenders, they have to thread a really narrow path, need Petey and Quinn to keep growing, need Myers and OEL to not drop off and what few players in the system they have - need to work out (ie Rathbone needs to turn into a #3 guy, Hoglander and pod develop into quality top 6 guys) and even then they probably need to hiton a couple of their late picks with a late bloomer or two. Part of that narrow path is either Dickenson bouncing back (certainly possible, he was apparently good not that long ago), or at the very least trading him at not his lowest possible point and getting lucky with a different reclamation project.

I never watched Dickenson before Vancouver, but clearly he benefited from playing in a solid defensive structure, and he won’t find that at Chicago, but hopefully for his sake he gets traded again and can put it all back together.

It was already pretty dead, I don’t think there’s a single person left in the whole organization from that series and at least those Bruins were good, the Columbus/Montreal losses and the first round streak are all more topical and funnier at this point I think
