NANI?

I'm playing the Project Zero Maiden of Black Water for like the third time, wishing the others were available on modern systems too. Shame the port of 4 isn't coming out til next year. I started a bunch of other horror games I had lying around and quickly realised why I never bothered finishing them.

Looking forward to Scorn this week.

during a previous spooky season i played a bunch of halloween themed super mario world rom hacks and this year i thought i'd do the same for super mario 64. its decompilation means people can do basically whatever they want, which has led to some really remarkable hacks, spooky and otherwise

Mario's Candy Quest is an all around solid single level hack that feels like it would be right at home in actual mario. each star gets its own big setpiece and corner of the level, and all the enemies and npcs and stars have gotten appropriate reskins. find the seven grand candies and defeat the pumpkin king! this one is definitely on the easy side and there didn't seem to be any kind of ending state that i could find, but it was a very pleasant way to spend an hour or so

Regular Pasta starts off innocuous enough, you're visiting a successful pasta restaurant that sources all of its pasta from a pasta painting upstairs, which leads into the pasta dimension. but once you get further inside things take a turn for the... irregular. this hack was submitted for a creepypasta contest and appropriately goes off the rails pretty hard by the end, concluding with a chaotic mess of a custom boss. this gets hard in a kinda janky way at two particular points, one early on involving pasta sauce surfing and one at said boss, but it's well worth checking out if you like goofy creepypasta humor

Super Event Horizon is based on the movie of the same name. i've never seen event horizon but this hack rules and def succeeds at fostering an unsettling atmosphere as you delve into the titular ship. it's laid out in a linear fashion and you'll need at least 20 of the 30 total stars to reach the final boss, but there is a small hub you can choose to visit that allows backtracking. takes some liberties with creating its own areas for the sake of length but it all felt pretty natural to me

ELISE wasn't intended to be spooky but it is inspired by yume nikki so i decided to check it out anyway and i'm glad i did. the visuals and dreamy vibes in this are off the charts!! every room looks incredible, tons and tons of custom assets and music and a real slick custom boss. there's even voice acting! i was, pretty blown away by this tbh, mario 64 has no business looking this pretty

also, i'd be remiss if i didn't mention Shrek Retold 64. rather than talking about the game, i'll just link its official bandcamp: https://teamcornersoft.bandcamp.com/album/shrek-retold-64-soundtrack

i've been slowly plugging through fatal frame, might do the sequels also. hellnight, the excavation of hob's barrow, darkwood, shadow tower abyss(only sorta counts), rule of rose, siren(maybe 2?,) and haunting ground are on the list too if i get the motivation.

Finished SOMA yesterday. I went in almost blind, the most I knew was it took place underwater. I was surprised at how good it actually was, though I could see myself being frustrated with it if I hadn't played on safe mode. Safe mode allowed me to take in the story and setting while also getting the spooky vibes. More suspense/horror/spooky games should take note.

tldr, SOMA is good poo poo

I’m a tremendous coward when it comes to horror games so canvassed the Horror Games thread for some recommendations.

I’m playing Little Nightmares at the moment and enjoying it quite a bit, some small moments of frustration at the way depth is rendered in the environment aside - there was one particular jump on to a suspended platform that I kept missing because my eyes/brain just refused to calculate the position of it properly.

It’s been spooky/creepy more than it’s been outright scary but the few chase sequences I’ve had at this point are certainly adrenaline inducing.

Once I wrap up with it I’m going to give Alan Wake Remastered a shot as my next step up. The goal is eventually to be comfortable enough with horror gaming to play SOMA which is a far leap beyond me at the moment as I struggle even worse with first person horror.

The truth is that SOMA isn't really scary due to the hide/seek stuff, it's actual scary poo poo is existential in nature which is why it's a timeless classic.

Even without monsters SOMA goes hard. It’s dark, it’s wet, it’s full of weird sounds and other phobia triggers, it puts you in cramped corridors and areas full of shadows and crevices and several different interpretations of the open sea floor. And that’s before you get to the story and the player’s predicament

Safe Mode SOMA is my out if I just absolutely can’t deal otherwise but I’m specifically trying to ramp up my tolerance for horror stuff to open up more of the genre to me, so from that perspective I think Safe Mode would be self-defeating.

I didn't think it was terrible. The movie by Pier Paolo Pasolini isn't great though. Really all of his movies are just not my cup of tea, I've tried quite a few times and I just don't like the way he shoots most things and his transgressiveness isn't the kind i'm interested in. The Gospel According to St.Matthew however is excellent and probably the best version of the Christ story put to film, and from a socialist atheist too. Really weird career.

My curiosity could not be contained.

[After showing my wife the Hot Dr. Pepper ad]

Me: What do you say, want a Hot Dr. Pepper?
Mrs Mode 7: NO. [emphatic]

---

My mise is extremely en place

I'm not sure where in the US this Dr. Pepper is produced but it contains High Fructose Corn Syrup so I think that means it's definitely a US import and not the UK version which has sugar.
We needed a control opinion so behold, tasting notes for Dr. Pepper from two Australians, one of whom drinks it very sporadically and one who hates it.

Mode 7 :v:: "What does this taste like?"
Mrs. Mode 7 ;-*: "Not quite orange."
:v: "Like sarsaparilla but they couldn't quite get it right."
;-* "Like sarsaparilla and motor oil."

Thus begins the experiment.

Immediately having second thoughts as it hits the saucepan.

Dick Clark's Dr. Pepper didn't look this colour. I don't think I've ever drunk Dr. Pepper out of a glass/otherwise been able to see its colour. I'm not a fan.

My vessel awaits with the required slice of lemon.

"Just heat Dr. Pepper in a saucepan until it steams". Check.

It is incredibly offputting that each ladleful of steaming hot liquid still fizzes a little.
Good friends? No.
Roaring fire? No.
Perfect time for Hot Dr. Pepper? Yes. Yes it is.

Tasting Notes:

Like a boiled hard candy in a mug. With the lemon it ends up taking on this almost...pomegranate hard candy flavour? My wife commented that she wouldn't choose it, but she thinks she prefers it to regular Dr. Pepper.
I don't hate this, bizarre as it is. The bottom of the mug ends up being incredibly lemony. The aftertaste lingers for much longer than I am comfortable with. My mouth feels coated in sticky sugary syrup and I am possessed with an overwhelming urge to go and brush my teeth immediately. It's remarkable in that as I was drinking it, it tasted fine, but this aftertaste is extremely lingering and hosed.

I'm going to make a hot buttered rum later to make up for what I've just done to myself.

I just wnated to stop kite from drinking the dr pepper ;_;

My spookish game for spooktober 2022 is diablo 2 resurrected, it’s dark and grim, and like any good horror art piece it raises questions about ethical consumption under capitalism. Also there was a balance patch at some point that made menagerie Druid a viable build, it’s fun! Me and 5 birds, 5 wolves, 3 other wolves, and 1 grizzly :)
