Anybody dealt with pet insurance much? We talked to a specialist today who said Gordie has a partial tear in his knee and will eventually need surgery. I don't know if that would be something we could get covered or if it would be a pre-existing condition. I'm hoping we can get him on insurance now, then go in and get his knee examined at our normal vet down the road when/if his leg gets worse, and have the surgery be covered at that point.

Pup tax.

Sign up for insurance, don’t mention ANYTHING about the knee tear to your existing vet and only put their information on the insurance application, I.e. not the specialist because the insurance will call them.

Go through the policy with a fine-toothed comb and make sure you wait until after the waiting period before you do anything at all with that knee (unless it’s an emergency of course).

Any suggestions for finding a good home for a foster?

I found a 3 month old puppy on the side of the road, no microchip, I took her to the vet and got her started with all the good stuff. She's absolutely adorable and a lovebug, but my home is too small for 3 dogs.

Most areas have active "[X location] pets for rehoming" facebook pages if you feel confident in screening potential adopters. Otherwise contact local rescues about your situation and see if they'd be willing to do a courtesy listing for you on their petfinder page and help you with screening. Especially since you're already fostering and took care of vet bills you can probably find one willing to help you out finding her a home.

Good idea, thank you. If I hadn't just raised a puppy I'd be down for the adventure again, but I don't have the energy for a back to back repeat.

Sorry I worded that confusingly. She's my foster, I'm trying to find a good permanent home for her, not another foster care situation. My house is small but not so small I cant foster her until I can find a good home with people who understand what raising a puppy requires.

I'm in Central Texas so if you know anyone who is right for what I think is a Border Collie puppy, lmk.

My old mans is (I think) 14.5. Embark just came out with an age test that looks at DNA methylation and in about 2 months we'll have his birthday (plus or minus 5 months). He isn't going to be around for the results unless something significant changes in the next 2 weeks but it will be nice to put a date on his memorial :unsmith:

He was suspicious of having his DNA stolen again.

You can do it, old fella, we believe in you!

We have been very lucky so far, probably due to her being small and mixed breed. Other than her eyes taking some physical damage over the years, she’s never really been sick, and still has a decent amount of energy (for about 10 minutes a day but still, the zoomies are there). Obviously every day is a gift at this age but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s around for at least another 2 or 3 years.
She does like to sleep with her bad eye up and open though, and she’s mostly deaf, so she’s scared me many times

I have an enormously stupid question and can no longer find the right thread for it. I have a (very) old lady dog and need appropriate dog food that I can find in rural Canada. Vet says it needs to be under 5% fat because we had a pancreatitis issue a couple of months ago that we still haven't locked down. (Though that might've been the lime disease? We're working on it.) So. Canuks. What are the good local dog foods?

Finally decided on a name for this guy:

Abraham Darby, going by Darby.

He really loves to chew plants, as you can see. No toy can compare with the resistance offered by a nice tall fern or any of my many plants. It would be cute if I didn't love my plants. I've mostly been trying to wave some other toy at him whenever he starts attacking the ferns and I can usually get him distracted so he plays with the toy. Any other tips? He also loves the tassels on my oriental rugs, I guess because they are similar solo tug of war thing. I guess I should try getting some rope chew toys and tying them to his crate or a doorknob or something?

Puppies are all about controlling access to things you don't want them to destroy. I'm all about management so I'd probably put the plants either up where he can't get them or behind an x pen for right now and tuck those tassels under for a while if possible. My house was just a maze of x pens for like 2 years. I try not to encourage string biting because they can really mess things up if eaten and a lot of puppies have trouble differentiating between appropriate rope/string chews and inappropriate ones like woven rugs or things with tassels.

...or power cables. Kepler destroyed three or four USB3 cables as a puppy, but fortunately none of them were plugged into high-voltage wall adapters.

Puppy destructiveness can last a long time. With my dogs it usually lasted until they were about two years old and then basically stopped altogether.

Pavlov is 10 years old and still primarily interacts with toys by trying to destroy them. If I try to play fetch with him, he'll be super into it for like 2 throws, and then he'll take the ball over to his bed to disassemble.

I've always had lab mixes, so they never outgrew trying to disassemble (and then ingest) their toys.

But by two years old they all learned that chewing/destroying household items is unacceptable, and they need to save their energy for things we specifically give them.

every time i take iris for a walk, i realise how good it is having a big dog; people keep their children away from her. my previous dog was a terrier mix, he was a wise solemn little individual and the love of my life, his one flaw was that he strongly disliked anybody under about twelve and this dislike only intensified as he got older because the only contact he ever had with small children was traumatic. he looked like a cartoon and toddlers found him irresistible, and their parents would not only actively encourage them to run over and touch him, more than once i actually had a parent physically pick him up (without asking) to present him to their kids. i have a traumatic response now when we're out walking and i hear a little voice go "DOGGY". some people have never been bitten by a jack russell and it shows.

I'm really happy that Jarvis is super social and wants to meet everyone. But we've also been fortunate that people in my area tend to be really respectful and ask. It's something I've trained my kids to do unwaveringly, and a few times it's saved them from a poor interaction.

I've never had a person pet Chino without asking first. A bigger problem here is tons of people want to walk their dogs without a leash or just let their dog roam the neighborhood unsupervised all day. My dog loves people but seems mostly annoyed with other dogs. Young unleashed dogs always seen to want more from him socially than he wants to give, which leads to problems sometimes. I wish people just used leashes it's not that expensive or difficult to use.

A church for one
I'm afraid Monty is going to be on leash at all times. He was making progress with 'come' but I just can't trust him to obey commands when I need him to. He has a problem of behaving selectively (when he wants to.) Like he'll sniff my hand to see if I have a high value treat and not obey if he can't smell it. Except I never have a treat in my hand when I issue a signal so he never obeys when he sniffs even if I have greasy bacon in the other hand.

I had to give Monty a break from training because he was starting to ignore all commands instead of behaving selectively. I spent all last week walking him on leash with no loose-leash training. No training at all except responding to his name. I say Monty, he looks at me, he gets a treat. No other training, just reinforcing that one basic command. Even doing his name (while on leash) he would only obey when he wants to. Although he was improving, he would straight-up ignore me anytime there's a distraction.

He's been intolerable all week and needs more exercise. I can't run with him on leash; he's an idiot and will tangle us both up every time he sees a lizard. I can't play with him because he fundamentally doesn't understand play beyond destroying things. Chase/be chased no way Monty is not having any of that. I will try to play with him and he will run out of the room because he does not like this fetch game that involves me taking the toy back repeatedly. He's smart enough to bring the toy he has with him, so y'know it's something like "No play! Only chew!"

On leash he pulls too much and too hard. Since he's on-leash at all times, the loose leash walking can't wait any longer. I restarted loose leash training in full-force today. I tried doing the positive reinforcement again by "guiding" him to walk next to me but now he will only respond to high value treats. I cannot feed this dog bacon/chicken bits every 10s, even I don't get to eat that richly. Even on leash Monty does whatever he wants and if you don't have a juicy meaty treat right now then Monty don't give a poo poo what you say.

I'm using a short leash and a harness. I had to go back to negative reinforcement which is what caused this whole rebellion in the first place. Every time he tugs I stop walking. If he stops tugging we can start walking again. If he doesn't stop tugging I say "Heel." I do not repeat the command. I do not say anything else while he is tugging. If he doesn't stop I eventually step backwards pulling him with me. If the leash goes loose then I say "Okay" and we can start walking again. Usually we can't because he starts tugging again immediately. Walks are very frustrating for us both but he needs to learn.

This. Teenage rebellion is a thing in adolescent dogs. Timings can vary but for most dogs it’s lasts from about a year old to say about 18 months. Statistically it’s a peak age for dog abandonment which is sad.
