This episode has a fun easter egg for fans of a different sci-fi franchise: The crew has to head to Tatasciore IX, "a favorite of shady weapons dealers." Fred Tatasciore (Shaxx) also plays Xur, a shady arms dealer that sells exotic gear and is a representative of a faction called The Nine from Destiny.

They also went to Shatanar Whatever. Great little easter eggs.

Mr. McMahan, if you are in fact reading this, please know that this lifelong Trekkie wholeheartedly approves of your show. It's frequently laugh-out-loud funny, often in ways that only a true fan would even notice, but it never crosses the line into mockery. You're straddling that line extremely well. And the show isn't just silly comedy -- you've developed these characters as people that we actually give a drat about, and I mean that as high praise.

My favorite deeeep-fans-only reference in this week's show? Kayshon yelling "Temba!" as he opens fire with his phaser, in the sense of "take this!" or "get some!"

The writers' room for this show has got to be composed of the funniest, biggest Trek nerds ever.

They perfectly nail the absurdity of half a century of sci-fi canon across multiple series and movies while keeping true to the utopian ideals and sentiment it was all built upon.

It sounds immensely trite, but Lower Decks is the exact kind of Star Trek show I would want to try and make if I'd ever been lucky enough to be given the keys to such a vehicle.

What I think was a very hard-to-notice-gag: If you look carefully, it's not just a Defiant class, but an eviller, pointier Defiant class.

If they are going into dunking on Section 31 I wonder if that'll tie into Rutherford's implant conspiracy. (Also, I hope it results in a Bashir cameo.)

They put the city of Sydney on the wrong side (it's on the same side of the harbour as the Opera House) but at this point I have no idea if that's a mistake or a deliberate 'movies make this kind of mistake' anachronism gag, every single movie fucks up the geography of sydney hard. Looking at you, Pacific Rim. (E: actually, if you stood there today you'd probably see some high-rises there thanks to north sydney, but that definitely didn't exist in 82)

Few pages back but it's actually a modernised version of a Discovery penis ship.

Given what we know about the general maturity of the writers room on Discovery (akiva goldsman dancing around singing 'Klingons have two dicks, Klingons have two dicks!' and just being delighted by the idea and joking about it over and over) it may have been intentional.

Which are ripoff vipers from another Star Trek game, Star Trek: Invasion, which was blatantly a BSG ripoff where you fought in ripoff Vipers launched from a ripoff Battlestar and I can only assume they lost the licence to a BSG game partway through development or something.

I've read that it was pitched as one but they couldn't get the rights so developed it as original IP. Of course, the parallels are fairly obvious and it won't surprise anyone to learn that there were BSG total conversions for both the original games and the remaster.

But I just realized, since this was all on the holodeck and not actual time travel: if Boombox Punk was Bus Punk, that means the Cerritos computer knows about Bus Punk. Which I hope means that Starfleet just kinda keeps running into him every time someone goes to the 80s.
