Chapter 7 is complete!

And at last we finally learn why Max is the main character of this comic!

Also: they've been in the background this entire time

I think most of us made the Agent Day connection a few years ago, but it wasn’t absolutely confirmed.

The other portion was news to us…and Spender :haw:

But, most importantly, we got huge Beef Wine lore today

Yeah, what was new to me was that those other two kids were her siblings. And that got me looking through and finding out they're still Max's best friends. So the connection to Agent Day wasn't from years ago, it was from weeks ago at most!

I thought this mega flashback started with Spender in bed thinking about stuff? How did we end up in a wine/dinner setting with agent Day?

Back at the end of chapter 5 he did arrange to have dinner with her that weekend, so I guess time passed off-screen while the flashbacks were happening.

This also means that chapter 5, 6, and 7 have all ended with Beef Wine.

Fitting that Mr. Spender and the Activity Club ends with a reveal into Max's past after we got thorough flashbacks for Ed, Isabel, and Isaac.

Chapter page is actually interesting? All Sandman could seemingly say was DONTLOOKATME, and know we have a character saying the opposite.

I’m sire this is fine.

that wasn't sandman (his wail was DONTBESCARED), it was the unnamed wight that ed's parents had spent/lost their lives tracking

i still skim every page but i don't like the direction the plot's been going for a while, it's moved further into shounen melodrama with every chapter and that's not half as good as the gags. for a little bit it tried to play off the melodrama as a gag but that pretense has pretty much dropped away entirely

I gotta say it's nice having this whole scene play out in one update instead of eighteen.

So at some point Davy's gonna try to sic Cody onto the Activity Club, yeah? Wonder if Hijack will be able to intervene.

I really hate to say it, but I think writing has taken a considerable dip since going to the script prose style it currently is. Too much of it is extremely tongue-in-cheek and on-the-nose to really support any intrigue. There's no questions anymore about what a character is thinking or feeling because the text literally just spells out, plain as day, and even straight up tells us when a character quietly takes it the wrong way. I understand that the current style is easier on Zack's wrist, and I'm not about to demand they put their health on the line to provide me with a free story, but I do kind of wish they had approached the current story telling with a bit more traditional prose in mind. Show me more; tell me less, y'know? I want to read about Max wanting to hit Davy with a bat, and then getting that pay-off chapters later when I realize the connection myself. Don't just tell me now, as soon as Max thinks it, that he will hit Davy with a bat at some point.
I want the story to narrate to me, not at me.

Unfortunately it's a very common problem for many webcomics that reach this stage of production.

I'm in love with Davy Jones operating like the Majima Everywhere System since he's been introduced. The man's just everywhere.

full omniscient narration is one of the biggest writer traps out there

(he's got a good thing going)
I do feel like a major appeal of the comic was piecing together the world and history through show-don't-tell moments, and a lot of that stuff just gets made explicit now.

Oxxidation

if nothing else this condensed narrative shows that paranatural would have never been finished in its normal format. still probably won't be, but holy poo poo, we'd have still been in the camping trip flashback right now

New page:
https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-8-page-2

One thing I genuinely like about the narration is this moment spent capturing Different Modes of Max's dad and how different descriptions are used for each one. Its just a fascinating bit of character work for what's normally such a goofy character.

Sounds like Team Doorman is mostly benign, or at least not as directly harmful as all the others who would want to eat the wight.

You can see their silhouettes here. Looks like Polaris is a teddy bear. Probably a polar teddy bear.

So Muse losing to Guerra explains why Ed got the paintbrush; Guerra had it laying around and likely didn't have anyone with lime-green spectral color to use it.

edit: I guess Davy is the "devil" leading the Death Cult? He openly references the Witch here and the factional struggle: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-5-page-281

Or maybe it's entirely separate, I don't see any vampires here: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-6-page-40

I never even realized Ed was supposed to be an Andalite until you mentioned Animorphs. :negative: I will excuse myself for this by the fact that he's not obviously a centaur.

Hmm, the Sphinxes are probably split into parts (Truth, Games, ??). Whatever's possessing Max is probably a Sphinx fragment: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-3-page-39

Nin is very concerned about "Isaac's friend". And this page seems to confirm, "I sensed that he, too, was unaware that he carried one of the s--": https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-5-page-14

What's Max's sphinx's aspect? Sfinks Rules?: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-6-page-42

Promises?: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-4-page-120 Boss Leader freaks out immediately upon Max saying "I don't do promises", and is on the alert for "animal instinct": https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-4-page-121

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Plus on the new page Nin mentions "The whole sphinx litter likely knows this is our base now." And I can't think of any reason they would think that was case unless whatever is possessing Max was one of them.

It occurs to me that the Sphinx of Promises was likely triggered to emerge from Doorman's speech to Isaac about breaking promises: https://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-3-page-36

I'd actually wager it's because Doorman physically asked Max to keep a promise, which tracks with when Boss Leader asked him to do the same.
