Mustached Demon posted:not covid but both of you, and anyone who will be around the newborn, needs to get a Tdap shot before baby comes this whooping cough is bad bad news and possibly more of an immediate threat than covid. we straight up: if you not get the shot you don’t get to see the kids until they have gotten their Tdap. even then it was hairy I remember sitting in the pediatricians office waiting for an appointment listening to a mother on the other side of the room talking about her child being very sick from it and then taking about how she would never get the Tdap vaccine.

it's called whooping cough because of the whoop sound baby makes after coughing fits it arises because the diaphragms too exhausted to breathe after coughing so much. Think your legs giving out during a heavy squat but it's your baby's diaphragm

We've put our daughter in a twice-a-week "junior preschool" for two-year-olds and she has started on the usual wave of illness, and on one occasion it also wrecked my pregnant wife for about a week, but so far no COVID (or so our tests claim) I am the only person in my immediate family (meaning my parents and sister, not my wife and daughter) who has not yet contracted COVID-19

I only know one person who actually died from COVID (my grandpa's assisted-living-home girlfriend) because most people I know are young and/or vaccinated all to hell and back COVID indirectly killed my grandpa, in that he had been thriving due to his revived social life in the home, but suddenly couldn't act in musicals or host poker nights or anything anymore, and did not use computers or the Internet, meaning he had nothing to do but sit alone in his room and watch TV from sunup to sundown, and his girlfriend died so he didn't even have her for company, and my mom lives like two hours' drive away, so she could only visit a few times a week and even this was a huge strain on her, and he just kind of sat around and waited for dementia to consume him entirely. God, these last couple years have been hosed. e: and he got to meet my daughter a few times when I drove back up to visit but she was terrified of him for some reason, and that didn't help either

It's insane how good the 3yo is getting at reading. She's sounding out words and getting them mostly right about half the time. She just read "dirge" correctly on the first try. Now if only she would start talking more I'm hoping the preschool program she's going to be in will help

Since my kids went back to school post-covid shutdown they just wear a mask all day and it's worked out great for avoiding all the sniffles. My youngest is in kindergarten this year but last year he was doing preschool masked too. Only a few other kids in his class were doing it so I'm not sure how effective it was for covid but it sure as hell cut down on our sickness exposure.

Yeah i can't wait to start the cycle of "oh the kid brought something home and now we're all sick" > "is it covid this time" when she starts preschool soon. Unrelated but I'd forgotten how legit funny sesame street can be. I was lolling hard at this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur8RaFpp8f4

so all the car seat brands use branding that says poo poo like "the last car seat you'll ever buy!" but what they fail to account for is a kid who vomits literally every time you go anywhere in the car and they build these fuckin things with two thousand uncleanable unreachable crevices so unless you want your car to reek like a middle school bathroom you gotta just trash the whole thing.

Seconding the Britax chairs. The covers come off and the fiddle-y bits which trap dirt and other toddler adjacent crap are relatively easy to clean. Probably easier with a pressure spray. I've gotten so I can pull them out, clean them, wash and dry the liners and get them back in over a couple hours. They also do the narrowest chair on the market (in Australia, anyway) so you can jam three

my youngest just throws up every time we get in the car. it got better last year because he went back to preschool and had to ride in a car daily to get there and back so the exposure helped but now he's in kindergarten and we walk to school. we basically don't drive anywhere unless it's a special trip (pumpkin patch today, for instance) so now that also includes tons and tons of vomit.

Have you tried those motion sickness glasses? That sounds like an extreme reaction that will have massively life-altering impacts unless you happen to live in a perfectly walkable socialist arcology where everything you could possibly need including medical services is within walking distance.

Not saying it's possible in America, but northern Europe (especially Denmark and Netherlands) have plenty of cities where you can ride a bike literally everywhere or take a train/metro. I get pretty motion sick myself, and I think it has a lot to do with rarely driving in cars in general. It was less bad in highschool where my friend (who was in a wheelchair which prevented him from biking) had a car. Also I'm second generation with no driver's licence. It's pretty doable. Anyway, more usefully and less vaguely angry at internalised car culture: motion sickness is something you can train your way out of mostly. It's inner ear stuff basically, so aside from the obvious car rides (which sounds ...unpleasant), turning and twisting the kid as a game might be good. We have like a huge shell to spin kids, and I will sometimes just pick him up and turn and throw the little guy around. Swings and such are good too.

Thanks everyone for your advice.Mustached Demon posted:not covid but both of you, and anyone who will be around the newborn, needs to get a Tdap shot before baby comes Definitely gonna ask our doctor about that in a few days. brugroffil posted:Influenza would be a good idea as well! But I guess I'll have to wait until the full moon to see if I also don't develop lycanthropy. On a more positive note, our girl is starting to move around. At first it was tricky, but now it's more noticeable every day.

I've got kid #2 on the way, which will be an 8 year gap. Anyone have any cool advice about age gap parenting? I've legit forgotten everything i knew about babies. It's just gone (as is all of our baby stuff...). Didn't get much sleep for a few years the first time so I figure I'm due an easy ride now

Triumphantly walking in the door at midnight having walked our colicky infant to sleep in the stroller doing laps around the block and she wakes up immediately. I don't endorse our forebears' strategy of drugging babies or rubbing whiskey on their gums to get them to sleep... but I understand it now.

this is a pretty weird one but...my 2yo daughter has said a few really strange things lately. About 2 weeks ago my wife was getting dressed while she was in the room and she pointed at her and said "sexy! bit sexy!" and laughed. Just now we were driving to pick up my wife from some spa thing and when I said "let's go get mummy" she replied "BUSTY mummy! lets get busty mummy!". In a vacuum I guess Kids Say The Darnedest Things but...there is nowhere she could have heard this aside from daycare. I know that the kneejerk reaction is to just blame daycare but she was born in covid and we moved countries when she was not even 1. We don't have a circle of friends she is around. We've never used a babysitter. She isn't around either of our families because they live in other countries. She spends her whole life in our house and the park and daycare. We don't have adult television on in front of her. I have never said "sexy" around her. "busty" is a dumb word and I don't use it. We made sure both times we didn't mishear her, she repeated the words multiple times. we're kinda...weirded out. we've racked our brains for any other possibility than daycare. Why the gently caress would the daycare women be saying things are sexy (to the point that she has made the association between the word and states of undress) or talking about how stacked my wife is in front of a 2 year old. I guess I have to take the easiest going daycare minder aside and have a real awkward conversation. I'm trying not to get angry thinking about it but what the gently caress.
