Post RE7 they're unstoppable, what a run. And not just RE either. Monster Hunter, DMC...SF6 might be the first fighting game I buy since SF4? We're in Capcom's renaissance era.

This is a case where PS5 only or split doesn't make too much a difference since RE4 is not a complete gameplay overhaul. The things that bother me about the last gen sticking around (PS4 pro, Series S, etc) is when developers have to make bigger decisions about what they can and can't do in order to make the game playable on those last-gen-ish machines.

Wild Hearts might just be interesting enough that it makes Capcom really have to bring out the big guns for MHW2. Hella exciting.

part of an interview with NieR devs, bolding for emphaisis

GS: The original Nier wasn’t exactly a best-seller. Despite this, years after the game was released, Square Enix greenlit a big sequel. What was that conversation like? Was the company on board from the beginning?

Yosuke Saito: I threatened to leave the company if I couldn’t develop Nier: Automata and pushed through internal approvals that way, honestly. They thought it would only sell 300,000 units globally…

GS: PlatinumGames played a big role in making Automata a success. How important is that partnership, and how big a role does stylish, weighty combat play in the series going forward?

Yosuke Saito: I wanted to find the best developers to create an action-RPG, and so I went to seek PlatinumGames’ help. Among them, Takahisa Taura’s team was exceptional, and so I do believe our partnership with them is quite important for the future of our series.

Just started Like a Dragon and I guess the design of Ichiban made me think he was a younger guy, but after his 18 year sentence he begins his adventure proper at over 40! I'm pretty sure Kiryu is early to mid 30's at the end of Yakuza 1.

Nothing against 40 yo's since I'm almost one myself, just find it interesting.

I know no one cares but I played about a hour of Gotham Knights. It seems...okay. I'm someone who didn't really like the Arkham games and wanted to like this but it was just kinda boring and I found myself just sneaking aroudn enemies instead of engaging with them within the first hour.

MWII campaign is alright so far. Production values are high. As always, it's a Call of Duty campaign so you're in the midst of multiple international incidents. There's an AC-130 mission.

I think it also might be fair to speculate that it suggests Platinum is staying independant going forward despite recent game launch disasters and floating acquisition rumors, there is still rather distinct industry momentum re: them as veteran guns for hire for Square, Nintendo, Sony, Sega, and Cygames.

Talking of Capcom is there any hint that there might be an upcoming multiplatform Monster Hunter game in the works, like a MHW 2? It's been a while since World came out and PS is basically my only gaming platform so the last one being Switch only is a little frustrating.

I think ppl might be mistaking when BP says all japanese rpgs are jrpgs for him being pedantic or contrarian when he is in fact highlighting a very succinct point that the term jrpg has largely become meaningless as jrpgs (in the broadest, BP-est sense of the word) have evolved so far from when the term was first coined. It would be more useful as a descriptor to use terms such as turn based rpg, action rpg, or anime rpg or whatever to describe individual games just in the same fashion that we still use strategy rpg and computer rpg

In other words jrpgs have come a long way since pacman dragon quest

They're def going hard on the $70 first party title price, Horizon 2 was the last one they said would be $60 with free upgrade and I don't expect them to change course until there's a Greatest Hits line or whatever. Who knows if that poo poo will ever happen either since digital marketplaces sort of render that kind of thing pointless.

I don't care what is or isn't a JRPG but Gotham Knights being bad made me remember that one part of Arkham Knight where you're playing as Gordon and its sunrise instead of the dead of night and how cool that was, they should have let you toggle that on whenever after beating the story or whatever

Blind Rasputin

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

Dodging was never an inherent part of the original FF games, esp the original FFVII. Therefore souls games are not JRPGs. If anything the “remastered” FF versions added dodging to copy something from souls games because they saw how much players liked it. That pretty much settles it.

Capcom hasn't charged extra for any upgrades, PS5 versions, or cross gen poo poo which is cool. Really most publishers aren't doing it outside of Sony, Activision and EA.

I'm really not even that opposed to paying $70 for a game as much as I'm opposed to the bullshit idea that a game on current gen is worth more than last gen or PC, or that one AAA game is arbitrarily worth more than another. I've payed $70 for some games and also will in the future, but it definitely puts a publisher on my poo poo list and the ones still charging 60 in my good graces. I think it's pretty funny that Sony seemed to kind of be the pioneers when it came to video game price increases and only a fraction of publishers have followed along so they just kind of look like greedy assholes.
