I really liked it. It's not really an anthology though. Like, functionally it is just a series of vigenettes, but they're all tied together to the main story and its not laid out like an anthology.

It's basically about a very haunted suburb, so it really is just a bunch of shorts, but they're tied together by the people investigating it and it's all one movie with one director. It's a pretty unique setup and has some great moments

Its basically a underworld film where somebody replaced the Vampires and Werewolves with Frankensteins and Angels Gargoyles.

I just got the Hellraiser collection (DVD with the first 3 movies) from CEX due to this discussion and rewatched the original, which I haven't seen in ages. I like all the little references to classic horror like when Frank first comes back to life, and his heart starts beating from under the floorboards as a nod to the Telltale heart. Also the practical effects where he first reassembles himself and it starts with just a torso, arms, and a trachea and esophagus, blindly sniffing around to find it's head to connect to. Great use of puppetry. I think Butterball may be dead because he didn't zap back like the others, he just got crushed by debris, but I'll see if he comes back in the sequel. Which I've never seen, the original was the only one I've seen before. It's kind of funny though that after doing up their new house, no one went into that room across the hall from the storage room. Seems a tad cartoony in a way.

Watched Terrifier 2 this morning, and while I liked it better than the first movie, it's more like someone's extended special effects demo than an actual movie. No real scares beyond just 'hey check out this gross thing', and even then, the novelty starts to wear off pretty quickly. The extended Allie kill scene especially feels excessive and indulgent as the whole thing just keeps going, and going, and then stops, and then goes some more, and then the mom shows up, and then it goes a little longer. I mean, it was gnarly and mean-spirited (which I'm OK with), but it has the same issue that a lot of the rest of the movie has -- it just keeps dragging on and on. The whole Clown Cafe nightmare could be half the time, and even the final fight feels incredibly repetitive: Sierra fights Art and gets knocked out, Art tortures her brother a little, Sierra fights Art some more and gets knocked out, he tortures her little brother a little, Sierra fights Art and goes to Clown Cafe Hell, Art tortures her little brother, Sierra kills Art. Once works. Twice is OK. Three's just clumsy. But I guess when you write and direct the movie, you only have to worry about your editor, but when you also EDIT your own movie....

It did make me laugh that the movie seemed conscious about how misogynistic the first one was, and goes out of the way to have the protagonist be a likable girl with the story centered around her, but then saves the most drawn out death sequences for the two young women in the cast, and has most of the prolonged mutilation happen to women, and there's that scene where a literal evil clown girl shoots black goop out of her vagina... OK, so maybe that's just weird taste in horror, at least there's no weird sex shaming or name-calling in this one. Just kidding, he managed to make it through the whole movie without doing it but couldn't resist putting it in the mid-credits scene where a mutilated woman uses her menstrual blood to write 'oval office whore pig slut bitch' on the wall. Jesus Christ, Damien Leone needs to talk to someone about his feelings about women.

Anyway, it wasn't a terrible movie, but the gore is honestly the only thing it's got going for it. I know Leone wanted to make the next great horror series, but I think instead he's just going to chug out movies equivalent to the Saw sequels where everybody only cares about the latest gross death and the rest is just sorta whatever.

I saw Terrifier 1 yesterday and thought it was absolute garbage that wasn't scary at all, and yeah, it really felt like the director hates women. There was that part where Art the Clown saws that naked woman in half starting at her vagina that left a really bad taste in my mouth. I have no interest in seeing the second one.

They did go a bit heavy on the glitching in 99 compared to the others, so I can see why that was a bit overmuch.

I'm surprised to see so much positive reaction to V/H/S99 because I really thought it was worse than the last entry. The majority of the stories seemed to be "teens being lovely", and I wish the wraparound had just been progressively weirder army man tales instead of turning into pretty much a complete retread of the very first V/H/S story, just subbing a gorgon for a harpy.

I agree with someone else that the middle 3rd of Ozzy's Dungeon felt like filler, and they could've had the same result if they'd just kept the whole thing within the Double-Dare game, but the girl pushed through her injuries and won. My expectations for Flying Lotus were probably higher because Kusohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDRYASntddo is so loving bugnuts. They get bonus points for Steve Ogg, though.

I really only liked the last segment and I think the Deadstream folks are gonna go places if they can keep it up. Besides the premise, I really liked the bickering between Nate and Troy (Go-gurt is NOT a meal!) and again, Melanie Stone seems to have a great time with her part.

Side note: looking her up on IMDB, Melanie Stone seems to have starred in a SHITload of low-budget fantasy films called Mythica: Something-Or-Other, with Kevin Sorbo :( . She also has WAY too many Christmas TV-movies to her name. I guess work is work...

How dare you! Most people like the Saw movies for their lovely overly convoluted continuity. The dumb trap deaths are just window dressing, people are there for some green-tinged Mexican soap opera with actual production values and slightly more screaming.

Yeah the Deadstream people need to go all-in on horror movies and let Melanie Stone give 110% on every role she's given. It looks like the Winters and Melanie have been in a lot of low-budget stuff, but Deadstream and To Hell and Back are two of my favorite new horror things from this year so I hope this is their breakout moment.

For the rest of V/H/S/99 -

Shredding: Everyone's seen nearly this exact plot dozens of times. It's so by-the-numbers.

Suicide Bid: Claustrophobic horror can be scary, but this was broken up by too many scenes outside of the coffin to have the impact it should have. I liked the ending.

Ozzy's Dungeon: I agree with everything everyone's said, that this was better in idea than execution and could have used another few passes at the script. I thought that the Double Dare part was the whole thing, and it was going to get more and more absurd and dangerous until it was revealed that there was a sinister reason behind the game. And then just when I was wondering if the extended torture porn middle part was going anywhere, it had a rushed ending.

The Gawkers: More teens being lovely, but I don't know what the message of this one is. We get a way-too-long short film about teens creeping on their new neighbor, and in the last sixty seconds she's a monster and kills them. Nothing suspicious or scary happens in the entire lead-up. The kids find the snake skin, notice some statues on her property, and she lifts the iMac with no problem, but none of that is connected to "the kids deserved this". There was a massive lost opportunity for a "Rear Window, but with a gorgon" short film.

To Hell and Back: In addition to what I said at the start of this post, journey through hell scenes have captivated me ever since I was an edgy teen reading Dante's Inferno. I also liked how Mabel just wanted her name written in that book. I kept waiting for her to betray them, but nope, she was just single-mindedly obsessed with becoming Hell famous.

I've watched the first 3 Hellraiser movies now, and hope that the reboot doesn't take too much longer to get to the UK.

I liked all three, although the second is definitely the strongest which seems to be the prevailing opinion. I really liked moments like Channard's transformation into a Cenobite with the great line "To think... I hesitated". Also the reveal before that that Julia has been a Cenobite the whole time, or at least working with them, as she whispers to Channard on their tour through the Labyrinth "I have such sights to show you.." I like the Labyrinth in general, it's a cool design for a hellscape and the matte paintings really give a good sense of scale.

The third movie was definitely the silliest, like CD was overly cartoony at times, but it had some good moments too. The whole visual of the destroyed Night club had some inventive ideas, like the one guy with billiard balls forced into his mouth and the other guy with dice shoved into his eye sockets There were some neat practical effects there.
