human strength is actually probably a pretty good default limit, you'd break stuff all the time accidentally without it, especially if you use these clamps at every opportunity

Sounds like a great excuse to finally upgrade all your housewares to sturdier stuff that can survive your clamps. Think tungsten carbide dishes, reinforced concrete furniture, Model M keyboard, old Nokia phone.

Pantone has a copyright on a catalogue of calibrated colours and their associated “Pantone colour” number. what they license is the mapping from a known Pantone number to a reliably reproducible colour (assuming everything is calibrated properly). it’s like having copyright over a map, sort of: someone else can make another map of the same area, but if you want to use Google’s then you have to license/pay.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

If I recall correctly, the exact colors of several national flags are officially defined as Pantone numbers. Which means in theory, the company could change their catalog around and instantly change the "correct" colors of those flags.

interesting. I can’t find anything about things being defined in terms of Pantone, but I do find that the US flag is defined based on “the Standard Color Card of America published by the Color Association of the United States” and there are Pantone labels for them as well

Colors are not copyrightable or patentable in any way. Nor are recipes, including recipes for how to produce specific colors out of ink. (That recipe thing is why most recipe sites online have big blogs nobody reads about how their grandma used to serve this dish. The blog post is actually a copyrightable work although the recipe on its own is not.)

The actual swatch books themselves (which sell for about $200) are probably copyrighted, but that will cover the specific structure of the book and not the information within it.
They look like this:

Here's a blog post from 2005 about why GIMP doesn't support pantone colors:

https://web.archive.org/web/20101120053454/http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/49236 posted:

If you search the Web, you can find homemade colors and palettes for many graphics apps that refer back to the Pantone numbers. The holdup is that an application that packages or ships a color palette derived from the Pantone swatches runs the risk of legal action from Pantone.

Exactly what legal action Pantone would take is unclear, but its "About Us" Web page claims that "an unauthorized claim by third parties either as principals or agents, inferring that any referenced color or color system is the same as, or equivalent to, a color standard or color system of Pantone, may be a violation of Pantone's proprietary rights" -- without being specific. Is it patents? Copyrights? Trademarks?

It seems as if the company is being intentionally unclear; certainly by doing so, Pantone can wave a bigger, scarier legal club and chill a wider variety of competition. A Groklaw discussion raises the question of whether any of Pantone's patents apply to the color matching system itself. It is widely agreed that colors and numbers cannot be copyrighted or patented -- though perhaps Pantone would claim that its collection of color swatches as a whole constitutes a "database" which could be copyrighted, much like the phone book.

Certainly the simplest claim would be trademark misappropriation or dilution towards someone who produced a color palette marketed as compatible with Pantone's. This is what prevents open source products from including built-in Pantone color choosers.

It seems like the threat is mostly "we will drown you in legal fees over unspecified violations". Of course thanks to the wonderful US court system this means you will be out assloads of money whether you're right or wrong.

Maybe it doesn't apply so much to crushing things with robot hands, but you also can't really give yourself super lifting strength with your robot arms because at a certain point you'd just rip them out of the socket because the rest of you is too weak. If you're gonna go robot go all the way imo
