Pat trolling Beato is just because it's funny to describe any kind of theory knowledge as "a Beato" and also it's a fun word to say. Bee AH tow! I don't think there's any kind of real malice in it. He's pretty boomer in his taste I guess?

Five years on a stand in a room with great airflow, multiple scrub downs with different cleaning products, and my hands still smell like cigarettes when I'm done playing. Also occasional whiffs of stale beer. This thing spent the previous ~40 years in some harsh places.

I have no idea if it works on cigarettes / tobacco, but you could try a stainless steel soap bar afterwards. They work for onions...

That danelectro I restored has an unfortunate smell of harsh chemicals and something acrid, vaguely like animal urine

but I got it for a steal so I will keep playing that bastard

Ooo I'd be very afraid what kind of smells/juices the Masonite and 1950's diner seat upholstery on a Danelectro could hold... any moisture that got in that chambered body would prolly just rot it apart. Mine was used (as all my guitars are) but apart from a pickup selector that badly needs replacing there was nothing funky in it

It works for me, because it's as much a joke on Finnerty as it is on Beato and, yeah, it doesn't feel malicious. GuitarTube can have big boomer energy, sure, but its in fun and it's nice to be reminded that for most players, "theory" and "vibes" is kind of a spectrum rather than a binary.

Its me, I'm the Beato hating goon. He just really rubs me the wrong way. I hate the endless shilling, constant bitch baby whining about youtube demonitization, and the boomer as gently caress rants about modern pop music. He also has this real lovely professor vibe in the videos I've seen where he tries to teach theory topics. Its clear he has no idea how to teach, which is an entirely different skill than knowing the topic, and he just kind of firehoses jargon followed by "See? Do you get it yet? No? Buy my books" He definitely knows theory poo poo backwards and forwards but he's an intensely annoying person, to me, personally.

Hard to say with the text, it might reference a Harley Benton, they do an SG in that colour and it might be single pickup. Think the scratch plate is right for that.

I don't worry much about faces. Once I read that Netflix data shows people are more likely to watch a show based on thumbnails with exactly 2 faces in it, and since then it's all I've been able to notice.

And I recognize it's the same algo-working in play, but I do get annoyed at people giving videos titles implying they are quitting YouTube, when obviously they aren't. Or making a tearful apology for accidentally tweeting a slur or something.

Beato's fine if he's talking to or about a band/musician that I like, because he has a solid knowledge of both composing commercial music and the industry, so the conversations tend to be pretty interesting. Also his whining about YT and demonetization is 100% correct, even if it's annoying.

I've tried watching his instructional stuff, but I agree he's not a particularly good teacher and most of it goes over my head anyway. There are tons of way better instructional guitar YouTubers, so whatever.

Pat turning him into a meme in his videos is genius though.

In other guitar news, I did a favor for a buddy of mine who happens to be sponsored by Fender, so he hooked me up with this:

Mod shop HSS Strat in Lake Placid Blue. Set up was nearly perfect out of the box and it still smells like the paint shop after a week.

Other guitars are (L-R) Dean Zelinsky LaVoce, Nashville Tele, '99 MIM Strat. Need to decide what tuning to keep these in now...

One of my fav colors, in fact I’m constantly upset I bought a sunburst pro II instead of that color (or now the new fiesta red 61 vintage II which has me on the edge of very bad decision making)

Yeah, I actually got more inclined to watch him once I realised he was just playing the game with his titles. I'm not a fan of The Darkness and his "good morrow fellow liege I doth tip my cap, methinks" style of speaking grates, but he's good when he gets into the meat of the songs and seems very open minded and thoughtful.

I picked up one of these Eart Headless models, the new GW2-Pro as it looked like that model fixed the weird bridge the previous models were using.

Got most of the way through the setup thinking the body shape & neck profile are really comfy, fret work is really nice, electronics aren’t bad, tuners work really well actually…. And then threads in one of the holes for the intonation set screws is stripped, so the D string will never stay intonated. It’s a machine screw, not a wood screw too, so you’d need a new base plate for the bridge to fix it, can’t even try wood filler or toothpicks or whatever. I think this one’s going back to Amazon.

Except for that one issue, it’s really quite nice. Desperately needed a setup, but once the truss rod & action were set it felt pretty good. If only it would, you know, make notes in tune. I will also say the… headstock? Locking nut thing? Is a total pain in the rear end too though, there’s two screws you loosen for each string, feed the string through two hopefully-aligned holes under those screws, then tighten the screws down to lock the string in place. It seems to work well enough, but feeding the string through the holes is an exercise in frustration. I think maybe my next try will be NK guitars.

thanks for explaining fret polishing to me. playing the poo poo out of it has broken it in somewhat, but i'll give the frets around the 12th some special attention to facilitate easy bending.

this guitar will nevertheless need to visit the luthier, because its nut slots are a little too deep -- i had to raise the saddles quite a bit to stop the fret buzz at the 1st fret!

nasty! imagining the cavity under the pick guars is completely full of cigarette butts and sticky beer residue. EDIT: whats with the extra holes? someone wanted to move the knobs a little bit to left?

I assume the extra holes were coil taps at one time, but nothing was in them when I bought it and there's a piece of black tape on the inside to keep poo poo out.

Surprisingly, nothing under the guard but solid wood. Small guard ones have drilled hole between pickups and the bridge pickup and control cavity. I was surprised this one didn't have extra routing.

alternate tunings, just faffing around and figuring out chord scales and inversions will go a surprisingly long way.

Fingerpicking, you can go as far down the fake nail rabbithole as you like. I had a pal who was a very hardcore fingerstyle guitarist with a standing appointment with a particular nail tech at a local salon in koreatown. Other folks load up on clear polish and nail hardener, still others use fingerpicks banjo-style or lean into the softer attack of playing with the pads of the fingers.

when I was in college I had a belt buckle that had a 3 inch section of 6 strings strapped to the front to practice finger picking on.

I pluck with finger pads and use the edge of my short nails occasionally, I don't bother growing nails out for it. I'm not terribly great at it anymore and kinda gave up on it. It used to be the only way I played though
