If the joke is the Delorean sucks then I didn't get it and my friends didn't get it. I still think it looks cool now! And Doc says "with style" not "with a whole lot of horses under the hood." You make a good point about the car not starting though. Wasn't there a kill switch that Marty didn't know about? Or am I inventing that?

Everyone knew Deloreans were poo poo back then and it was absolutely the intended joke. A few years later the kid that drove a Delorean to my high school got made fun of for driving a poo poo car that stranded him at school multiple times until he just changed cars

Individual episodes were good or sometimes great, but others were worse than the shittiest 1990s fantasy shlock. The episode about going up the mountain to find some dragons stands out as particularly bad. Also the show jumped around in time constantly but featured ageless characters (and they forgot to age up/down the one human character who would actually age), so unless you had read the books you were often left pretty confused about the characters motivations in any particular episode. They signalled the time jumps well enough through dialogue or exposition for people to piece together the overarching story, but it still didn't work well for someone who hadn't read the books. Also, the standard "too woke" complaints of the usual crowd who don't want anything in their media other than white actors, power fantasy straight cis men, and simpering sexy women as scene dressing.

Pretty much the entire reason the Delorean is remembered at all is that BttF made it look so cool Also as someone who lived through the 80's cars not starting was pretty normal, cars just used to suck rear end and I have many memories of being stranded in parking lots when I was a kid with my dad trying to figure out what was wrong with our random shitbox Like modern car computers adjust 100 little parameters to keep the car running right that all used to be some analog poo poo you had to turn and tweak and get just right for the car to actually fuckin work

If you get to the second season (which is much better and all the timeline bullshit is cleared up) they have an absolutely stellar joke about this
