Cody links a crafting channel that is pretty fun and probably OSHA related.

A bowl carving demo. It's pretty clear he's an amateur but has a good sense of his tools. Was a little baffled when he didn't realize he could just invert the log in his wedge to get at the other side...

There's also the AVUS. IIRC they covered it in a topgear episode

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVUS

it was not exactly the safest thing ever. The outside of the turn had no barricades, at all.

https://youtu.be/w_wJaVFS0VI (driver was somehow completely unharmed in this crash, you can see him standing up on the ground while the car is still rolling)

In 1928 they were hitting 128mph on it. In the TWENTIES. The Wall of Death banking was added by, fittingly, the loving nazis, for the 1936 olympics

"[In 1937] Mercedes driver Hermann Lang's average race speed of about 276 km/h (171 mph) was the fastest road race in history for nearly five decades, and was not matched on a high-speed banked-circuit until the mid-1980s at the 1986 Indianapolis 500"
after that, and another driver dying going for a speed record in 1938, it was deemed too dangerous to race in the top-tier classes, and after the 60s iirc the banking was removed, but series kept racing on it until 1998

warning if you go looking for footage from this track: there's footage of when Jean Behra had his fatal crash there in 1959.
It's not immediately super-graphic because of the low film detail, but it's still a gruesomely fatal crash in an open-top car, so, y'know.

details of it for the morbidly curious who also don't want the images burned into their brain:
He lost control of the back end of his Porsche 718 RSK while entering the deathwall curve at 110mph in the rain, and went up over the outside edge and slammed sideways into a protruding block of concrete holding a flagpole.
He was ejected from the car and his body impacted the flagpole violently enough to knock it down onto the track, he died instantly from a skull fracture.

So avoid any stuff about it mentioning him if you don't wanna see that(you really don't). There were several other fatal crashes but that's the only one I know of with footage, however with any old retired circuit racing footage: That whole corner of YouTube is notoriously lousy with horrifying poo poo out of nowhere since the thumbnails all usually just show race cars, video titles almost always will warn you though
[edit: i forgot to finish the last sentence there]

the further back into motorsports history you look, the more indistinguishable it becomes from chariot racing

I attended a test burn at a fire academy in Philadelphia, as part of an engineering seminar for work.

They had a room set up exactly like this, with a Christmas tree.

It defies belief, how quickly a pine tree goes up and the sheer volume of radiant heat it produces in the process. Room was demolished in under 3-minutes.

For that kind of HF work you really need an exhaust hood and thick acid gloves. What's his secondary containment? A bunch of baking soda? Yikes that's gonna get hot.

I saw a burn demonstration of three different trees in various states of dryness in room-ish setups of drywall. Even the greenest one went up so loving quick I never bought a natural tree again.

I watched some friends dispose of a Christmas tree by burning it on a beach once. There was a pretty strong breeze going and they dug a little ditch to put the tree in, which in retrospect provided a steady directed airflow. The thing lit up like a rocket engine and took about 30 seconds to completely burn out.

Hitler wanted the land speed record to be set on the Autobahn.

One driver described it as “like trying to steer a bullet down the barrel of a gun”.

Is hydrofluoric acid the one that will soak right into your bones and nerves from even a tiny skin exposure and kill you like two weeks later?

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

Yep! It's the acid that isn't really dangerous because of its acidity (which is moderate), but because of its extreme toxicity. It will turn your bones to jello and stop your heart.

Look Professor, a destruct switch!

Yeah, if you want to read more about how nasty the stuff is here's a good link.

This chart from it is a decent tl;dr, since it shows roughly how much exposure is enough to reliably kill you. Of note is a 1% BSA burn via anhydrous or a 5% BSA burn via >70% concentrated solution will kill you via electrolyte imbalances.

Mustached Demon

Yeah it sucks all the calcium out of your blood then you go into cardiac arrest.

Proper PPE, training, and respect for the HF will keep you safe. A tub of calcium glutamate nearby is required too. Gives a ton of calcium for it to gobble up while you seek immediate medical attention.
