Weirdly enough, Shin Godzilla's defeat is the only Toho one that falls flat for me. It's just so sudden and strange, which certainly tracks, given what the rest of the film was going for, but the instant ice-over felt silly.

I've said this elsewhere, maybe even here.

Godzilla 1984 and Shin Godzilla are like, twin movies. It's just that for every choice one makes, the other did the opposite. They are equal but opposite films in my opinion, each doing the same general THING, but in very different ways.

Really go by them beat by beat and see how different they are, while built on the same skeleton. It's really fascinating.

There is a lack of Dr. Pepper product placements in Shin Godzilla though

I have, in fact, used your arguments to compare and explain the two films to friends of mine. I think I remember you posting something to the affect of "Where one zigs, the other zags." That's an excellent way to put it.

The fun part is adding '54 in there and seeing how long it takes everyone to go insane.

The even MORE fun part is pointing out how Mothra '61 did that with Kong '33 first, and how it was even more wild.

They're completely opposite movies. Kong meeting Mothra is like the biggest thing remaining on my "I want this. How has this not happened yet?" Kaiju film bucket list.

Yeah, I know it was supposed to be Kong vs Ebirah at first, but that whole movie is way funnier if you imagine it's just a sore Godzilla doing a sarcastic Kong impression before Mothra slaps his poo poo in.

It's such a weird case of convergent evolution looking back at the old Fleischer Superman short "The Arctic Giant" and how closely it resembles Godzilla despite being made almost 15 years earlier, all that's missing is that the titular Arctic Giant doesn't have a breath weapon(which in retrospect is probably one of the more important things Godzilla brought to the genre)

Yeah, it's mad. When I first saw images of the Arctic Giant I thought it must be a semi parody of Godzilla, when I found out it predated it I was kind of blown away. It almost feels like the character is designed to recall a man in a suit. Weird.

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
A friend got a hold of Shin Ultraman, so we watched it tonight and it kinda ruled. My only complaint is that it felt more like several episodes of the show and not really a cohesive movie, but it’s still pretty good.

Not as good as Shin Godzilla, but it’s a way more faithful adaptation of the show in terms of tone than I was expecting.

No, but I've got a 4k of Gojira tonight at my Alamo. I booked the last time they had it, but couldn't make it, so I am *excite*

Hoping they pick up later era films at some point

Planning on it, yeah. I'm a bit skittish given how hit or miss Fathom can be, but it's not every day you get to see a G-movie on the big screen. If I had my druthers I'd see a screening of G'54, but Toho is up to its usual tricks and only distributing that through Alamo Drafthouse, which is nowhere to be found here in the southeastern US.

When I went to see Gundam Narrative it was delayed 20 minutes because they couldn't find the hard drive with the movie on it. I don't know if that's Fathom's fault or the theaters tho

It's complicated. Sometimes Fathom themselves are just lazy but other times the projectionists are lazy. There was a Fathom Events screening of The Thing earlier this year IIRC that everyone generally agrees fell into the former category, but other times things can go sideways if your local theater basically forgets to start the show on time. This reddit thread goes over some of the issues.

Flash forward to today, it's my son's 12th birthday this week and he had the same friend over for a "Yes" day and a return sleepover of all night video games and a Shin Godzilla viewing. His dad decided to make him a birthday present and here is what he did. Apologies for my lovely phone's camera.
