Vermintide 2 rules. Come play Vermintide 2. Game has been out for like 4 years and you can still instantly get into matches with other players at any time of day.

Prodeus is very good, and then there's stuff that's in early access at the moment, like Turbo Overkill and Viscerafest. There'll be Beyond Sunset in 2023. Also, if you don't mind a low-poly minimal-texture aesthetic, ADACA is a solid combination of Half-Life 2 style campaign and Halo style weapons (with a huge STALKER-style side mode)

A lot of the big ones were made baseline. Go into your settings and turn on always seeing player outlines, kill confirm crosshairs, detailed UI info, look at other stuff that sounds good.

The only mod from the workshop I use is the one that makes bots smarter. This is irrelevant if you plan to always play with people

I didn't know retro fps was a genre now! I really don't learn anything about this hobby since I stopped following Giant Bomb. What's the crown jewel of these games? Is it ultrakill?

Early goings but I think Ghost Song might be a very good metroidvania. The sound design is really standing out for me, with very atmospheric exploration and almost no talking or text so far

Yeah agreed, I've only just started it myself and I particularly like the overheat mechanic. If you shoot your gun too much it overheats and slows your fire rate dramatically - but then your overheated gun-arm does more melee damage until it cools again. It seems like such an obvious, logical mechanic that makes sense in-game to encourage you to change up your playstyle mid-fight and not neglect parts of your build too much, but I don't recall ever seeing it done that way before.

The art-style is beautiful too, and I'm feeling myself getting drawn in to the exploration of it the same way as I did, dare I say it, in Hollow Knight. Every metroidvania I've played since that game has felt wrong in one way or another because Hollow Knight did everything that's good about the genre so well. Maybe it's just because of the amount of time that's passed and I'm ready for another one of these now, but Ghost Song feels like the first one I've played that is its own thing but, for me at least, isn't suffering from "not-Hollow-Knight" syndrome. Apparently the guy that made it used to be a comic book artist before he decided to morph into a one-man metroidvania developer and to look at the game it really shows.

Cool I've wanted to try this game for a while but I usually get bored of similar games too fast to spend a lot of money on it. I think recently they even had a free weekend or week but I ain't downloading 100GB of game just for a weekend. This seems to be actually free, forever so I'm all in

How do you feel about games where you need to decipher a hundred different gameplay mechanics layered on top of each other to be able to create an extremely customizable murder machine that you can use to murder thousands of squishy things in the exact way you want?

If that sounds appealing then it's great. Just make sure to first find someone who knows the game already and whom you can bother with questions every 5 minutes, because you'll need it.

i love ULTRAKILL, but its more retro aesthetics rather than gameplay. It feels very modern to actually play. I would also hold off on calling it the crown jewel since its still in early access and is missing its final act. Once that releases though...

ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL

zoux posted:

Is warframe get intoable?

It is, BUT the game's onboarding is kinda dire at explaining some of the most important systems (like mods), so I'd strongly suggest joining the thread or goon discord after you do the tutorial and announcing you're new and let folks help you out. Also join the goon clan, even if you play to 100% solo everything being into a clan gets you access to a bunch of stuff like weapons and frames you'll otherwise wouldn't be able to get.

Finally, WF goons will most likely tell you to get to level 2 to unlock trading then just dump a fuckload of mods your way. Just go along with it, it's just to smooth out the initial grind bump and general no-ideaness (you still have to rank them up and grind mats/weapons/frames) and will in no way affect your progression or make the game too easy.

very much no without friendly peeps to explain everything to you
and there's like 50-60 hours of new player progression that's totally different from the rest of the gameplay of backflipping through corridors and instagibbing 20 enemies at once as you farm for rare drops

i tried warframe a few years ago and ive never been so inundated with so many different currencies and gameplay systems before in my life. It legit gave me anxiety and i had to uninstall it after a day or two cause I had no loving clue what was going on

im sure there are ways to navigate those systems and enjoy the game itself, cause from what i played it was fun, but there was no way i was going to put the time in to figure it out

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

If you create a shelf in your Steam library you can create an easier to share list like this:

I couldn't tell you how many hours were spent playing TF2 and how many were spent idling for item drops, so yeah. 10 hours were spent playing Dota 2, the rest all involved seeing The International matches in-game during 2 editions (I think). I wasted so much time on contracts mode in both Hitman 2 and Hitman Absolution. I left Little Inferno running for a while just to increase the listed time on my store review, that "game" is over in a couple of hours.

Yeah I have hundreds of hours in warframe and while I do enjoy it and come back on occasion, I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze for a new player unless you specifically have a need for hundreds of hours of grinding and optimization

Warframe has the best movement system in any game. Once you master the floor-slide, bullet-jumps, aim-gliding, walljumping, groundslamming and can chain it all together without thinking to end up anywhere you want inside a large room within a couple of seconds - all in a slick-feeling, manymany frames-per-second game engine, it feels so good. Then on top of that there are certain frames that specialise in moving around even faster :stare:

Not to mention the Bard Frame, who has her own musical instrument that you literally compose your own music track on which then blasts out across the level when you're playing with her, and anyone in range can do stuff in time with the music to receive buffs and effects. As limited as it is, I've spent hours composing tunes in Octavia's Mandachord thingy whatever it's called.

It's a good if convoluted game, if you're into lootershooters.
