The other thing that I hate about those articles are that they always complain about green energy or tans rights or whatever topic is deemed as "off putting" to Latinos as if the Democratic party makes anything more than the shittiest and minimal efforts to defend those issues in the national space. It's always some dumb cliche about how the party can still "be about those things" just "not so much" but if the Democrats talked any less about trans rights for example THEY'D NEVER TALK ABOUT IT AT ALL. All the national effort and messaging is about how everything got fixed and America is good now and inflation got beaten and these assholes act like Joe Biden is out there talking about trans rights and electric cars everyday

That article didn't mention trans rights anywhere I saw, but had a ton of references to racial equity which did make me wonder if Dem messaging on racial equity in southern states ever includes Hispanic/Latino. Because it sure seems like it doesn't despite the prominence of people like AOC

More than 50 percent of them. We have the data,” Ortega said. “These voters, the future of our community, they are abandoning us. And honestly,” he paused, with a grimace, “I don’t blame them.”

Willa Rogers posted:there are some good quotes that go beyond the reflexive "we gotta get more conservative": I feel like we took very different messages away from that piece. quote:They are not here because the sea levels are rising, or because of social justice, or anything else. We’re out there talking about racism and the Green New Deal and defunding the police, and we’re freaking them out.” quote:Garcia pointed to 2018, when Democrats nominated Andrew Gillum for governor—a candidate endorsed by Bernie Sanders. Garcia and his fellow Democrats in Miami could already recite the attacks on Gillum as a sleeper socialist.... quote:Progressive policies—around climate, or guns, or even immigration—might poll well with the liberal, college-educated wing of the party. But they might also continue to alienate the working class, including the Hispanic working class, from the Democratic brand quote:“How do you feel,” Sarita Perales, an administrator from the local hospital, asked, “about the Biden open-border policy?” I think this is what were going to be hearing about for the next two years from the very smart adults in the room who are just having to make hard and realistic choices

Ciprian Maricon posted:I feel like we took very different messages away from that piece. oh, you were right from the jump that the story angle is about social conservatism, but as with other ways that democrats try to mirror republicans, moving right on social issues won't restore their lost hispanic votes. I think the overarching problem is one of trust, because hispanic voters see dems only paying attention to them around election time, and have taken their votes for granted. that's what's allowing the gop to make inroads, at the community level; they're simply paying attention to these voters & their needs. this was what stuck out the most to me from that piece: quote:Days before I sat down with Garcia in Miami Beach, a poll from The New York Times and Siena College showed, for the first time in the survey’s history, that “Democrats had a larger share of support among white college graduates than among nonwhite voters.” democrats will be a permanent rump party if this trend continues. It doesn't mean that they have to get (even more) conservative on social issues, but rather not ignore things like the humanitarian crises at the border, which is affecting hispanic communities.

Context is this state was not ever supposed to be close, Dems for the longest time expected the same, and it must have gotten Real Bad internally if they had to call Oprah to do her second midterm endorsement ever (the first one defrauded a nursing home) https://twitter.com/samstein/status/1588342480407347201 Chris James 2 has issued a correction as of 04:42 on Nov 4, 2022 |
