I’d like to do content-reactive bias lighting for my gaming monitor and TV, and have bought most of the bits required for it, but…ADHD. I worked for a few weeks on a borrowed monitor that had that sort of lighting and it did feel “easier” to look at. at first I thought it was just good brightness and contrast settings and maybe font selection or whatever, until the owner showed me the difference with the bias lighting turned off. I don’t really understand the phenomenon, and it was a bit distracting at first tbh, but it feels nice.

XTimmy posted:PWM can happily cause flicker, it's the frequency that counts. According to Aputure their bulbs go at 20khz so you'd be fine up to about 1000fps. you can still manage flicker at the cycle rate of the lamp. but the timing of the shutter and length of exposure has to be calculated to match the rate. 60 hz = 60 up and 60 down cycles = 120 pulses so 120fps is fine at any shutter angle. With PWM the lamp is not on very long at low %s so you have to test, and LEDs turn on and off fast, more like a square wave.. but why would you dim the lamp low for highspeed? probably fine at 100% especially if 100% means full duty cycle.

my recent splurge lightbulb purchase is LED C7 Christmas light bulbs that are actually ceramic painted glass with a warm white filament, so they actually look like the old C7 lights. the most electronics they have in them is the light emitting diode itself i got them for my parents because they've been using like 600W worth of incandescents for 40 years and my mom is always worried about the tree catching on fire

Lmfao look it was the cheapest and easiest way to extend the RGB gamer aesthetic out of my pc case into our whole house, creating countless battles between my spouse who thinks it's generally annoying and my kids who agree that it loving rules but also it was like $250 and counting, I've just been replacing the bulbs that were here when we moved in in 2017 with smart bulbs one at a time and we control it all with our phones because i don't want any other listening devices kicking around when we both carry one 24/7

And if the app was something you could install on your server, preferably open source so you're not at the mercy of the lovely company staying afloat indefinitely. But gently caress right off with lightbulbs connecting to the internet this is all doable with oss stuff depending on how dedicated you are. the way i have stuff set up I can control lights over the LAN without internet. I had the lights on a separate network that couldn't get to the outside world but i decided i don't really care if people hack into my lights, go for it, and if that's actually a gaping hole in my whole network, whatever, there's nothing of value on it also it's funny to gently caress with the lights at home when I'm out of town and know my partner is trying to get the kids to sleep
