Watching college sumo on midnights channel, the vibe is so much different. You’ve got teammates screaming support, the wrestlers are super pumped after a victory. So much fun to watch.

It has not. They've been having issues the last couple bashos because apparently the UK NHK licensee JSTV has been seeking out their streams to try and shut them down for carrying the english language broadcast in places NHK won't let buy their service on the assumption that everyone watching in English is clearly in the UK. The usual lack of understanding that there's an audience stuff.

So with the final basho of the year coming up I always like to take a look at who has the most wins in the calendar year so far as a way to measure who had a good year. I've put the top three below in spoilers in case you want to guess

Wakatakakage 49
Kotonowaka 46
Hoshoryu. 44

No Ozeki in the top 10 is kinda embarrassing.

Kotonowaka being number 2 even after having to pull out for COVID reasons in Nagoya is impressive as hell and I still love my boy.

If you've never played Fantasy before, check out the rules. In brief: just choose 3 guys at each rank, and you'll be drafted a team of dudes. That's all you really need to do, although you can trade during the first week if you want (most people don't). It's really fun and helps you get more familiar with lower-ranked guys.

Get your draft picks in by Saturday night Pacific time so I can do the draft for Sunday! Hakkeyoi!

As I continue to work toward regaining my Sanyagoon rank, I find myself inspired by the men in similar positions. Those who seek to return to higher ranks after a demotion, or whose ranks have been logjammed by the quality of the men around them in the banzuke. Preference is based on my personal, likely wrong perception of How Bad They Want It, or How Much The System Screwed Them.

Been ride or die with the Hoshoryu/Kotonowaka duo all year and while they haven't really had a huge breakout, they haven't let me down yet. If not for the COVID withdrawal in July, Koto could possibly have been a 5th K this time. At 7-4-4 in July, he probably goes at least 1-3, which given everything else would have been enough to give him M1e in September. 8-7 (he still probably gets the same joi schedule) would be a weak promotion, but it would still be an 8-7 at M1e.

Oho on the other had, has been a little disappointing so let's see how the next kid works out.

My thoughts on my picks:
Y/O: Either one is a win in my book.
S/K: Tough selection! I'm sure thanks to the wide pool. I've been a fan of Kiribayama, and I don't see a reason to drop him now. Wakataka has been going strong, and I hope to see a strong showing from him. Tamawashi is always a good pick, but I haven't seen Tamawashi at these heights before. What is he like when there are fewer higher ranked rikishi to annihilate, and much more lower ranked ones to be demolished by?
M1-5: The hardest pick, I think. Ura is my brand of fantasy sumo, and this feels like an Ura tournament to me, but I do admit I want to keep backing Wakamotoharu. I have a bad feeling re Takayasu, but I must choose him. Almost picked Hokutofuji instead before recognizing the depth of my mistake.
M6-10: Tough because most of the options I either dislike altogether, or worry won't do well, especially given the competition at these ranks. Nishikigi is still a strong pick, I hope, in a crowd of monsters.
M11+: I like to pick the folks coming up from Juryo, but the crop this basho was not at all the strongest from the division. Tough picks. Maybe this will be the upswing for Terutsuyoshi?
