Rofl, I grew up in LA, and just moved back there in September after living in Beijing for 5 years. Had a pretty serious car accident in October (no injuries but my car was pretty trashed). Living in LA without a car makes me want to die. poo poo is bleak. America is so hosed up.

Driving in LA makes you want to die too. 30mph everywhere on the "high"way.

I was reading up on the CA and UK HSR progress and CA really has the worst infrastructure building in the world. Terrible commute in BAY Area, NIMBYism. HSR that goes nowhere for 100 loving billion dollar. UK is also building their HSR with 100 billion pounds (which is same 100b dollar nowadays), they are able to connect their top 3 cities even though they are cutting the branch short and not connecting their 4th? largest city. Whereas the CA HSR not connecting any of the big cities. I think the DEM has to take responsibility for their basic infrastructure failure.

And that's comparing CA with the biggest train fuckups in Europe. The US is just uniquely bad at infrastructure.

i think your china experience might be outdated. practically every big housing community has mini parks and playgrounds, i was just in one today. and there’s like 3-4 different parks within 500 meters of my place in shenzhen which is pretty normal

Its hard to explain this because I am not sure if there are alot of children's playgrounds in the US suburbs. US suburbs has its unique problem of children don't play together.

OTOH, not all new Chinese buildings get playgrounds. Yeah I have visited playgrounds inside the large new building complex. However if the developer has only land to build 1 tall apartment building they are not making a children's park. China also has commercial playgrounds in malls to cater to the lack of playgrounds. China's children's slides are nowhere nearly as high and complicated as the US ones because people are deadly afraid of causing injury. Accidents do happen, my kid just cut his nose in a state park recently. So for some reason, the US legal system can handle it.

indian foreign minister quoting deng is a pretty promising sign of future cooperation between them

quote:

China on Friday concurred with external affairs minister S Jaishankar’s observation that an “Asian century” cannot happen if India and China don’t join hands and emphasised that the two neighbours have “far more common interests than differences”.

India probably. On the other hand trains are probably better than cali lol. I lived in Mumbai and had took the train to school every day just fine. A bus from my home to school used to cost 10 rupees.

Los Angeles is a huge combobulation that covered a large area. My wife and I went there, stayed in a cheap hotel in the San Gabriel Valley near caltech where the population was like 90% Chinese or Korean and just went to the various Hearst museums and the mountains, had great Chinese food and an awesome time. We had no interest in going anywhere else.

Yeah but you can also run on other things like improving the infrastructure or making the buses nicer.

hearing my grandfather talk about how great the streetcars in Minneapolis were back in the day (and knowing how good they still are in Toronto) makes their current LRT (which don't get me wrong, is cool and good) just a faint mimic of what once was
