Nihilism is worthless. If you're correct, then it doesn't matter because you've accomplished nothing and everyone is dead. To be ground soundlessly beneath their wheels, no squeaks or squeele to displease them.

If I were truly nihilist I would be making vacation plans for a private equity boardroom with something power grows out of. https://www.nahb.org/news-and-economics/housing-economics/housings-economic-impact/housings-contribution-to-gross-domestic-product

quote:

Housing’s Contribution to Gross Domestic Product
2 minutes

Housing’s combined contribution to GDP generally averages 15-18%, and occurs in two basic ways:

Residential investment (averaging roughly 3-5% of GDP), which includes construction of new single-family and multifamily structures, residential remodeling, production of manufactured homes, and brokers’ fees.
Consumption spending on housing services (averaging roughly 12-13% of GDP), which includes gross rents and utilities paid by renters, as well as owners’ imputed rents and utility payments.

Including owners’ imputed rent (an estimate of how much it would cost to rent owner-occupied units) in GDP has long been a standard practice in national income accounting. Were owners’ imputed rent not included, an increase in the homeownership rate would cause GDP to decline.

The table linked below shows housing’s share of both investment and consumption in the annual GDP accounts. All GDP components are adjusted for inflation and reflect the categories in the GDP statistics published by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Some of the numbers may differ from previously reported results due to revisions in the consumption categories instituted by BEA in mid-2009.

The motivation for GDP was to actually measure the economy somehow. It was originally understood as an imperfect measure, but now it has been idealized to become a thing to be worshipped itself as even more real than any underlying economy that has material existence but isn’t quantitative. It’s probably the best example of the precession of simulacra that I can think of

IQ is just to keep Jews out of the Ivies

e: wait that’s SATs isn’t it. well they’re both the same kind of nonsense from the start

yeah, it's supposed to measure both net income and net product. How much money people made should equal how much new stuff we produced. even an idiot knows there's no reason those should be the same but economic theory is nicer if its true.

That's why selling a house (or used cars or any other 2nd hand stuff) isn't 'income', and so home sales aren't GDP.

But then if people stop renting and all own homes, GDP would go down! even though people are better off and we make use of resources better. So the government makes up what you would have paid to rent the thing you own lmao

Antonymous
Apr 4, 2009

the news also has loved 'debt/GDP ratio' even though debt is a scalar and GDP is a rate. Like saying my debt/hourly rate. I owe $150,000 on my student loan and I make $15/hr so my debt to hourly ratio is 10,000x (actually the unit is hours but they never say that they just say the ratio as a pure number)"

Debt/GDP has a unit of years. So when its $15 trillion debt / 15 trillion GDP the 'ratio' is "1 year". but that sounds weird so they say one to one

and this stuff only gets more stupid the more you educate yourself on it

In NL income taxes are levied over the rent you theoretically could have made by renting out the home you own and live in.

Actual income received for renting out a non primary residence, aka landlordism, is untaxed. Instead only the property is taxed as property at a much lower rate.

The funny part is that the two party system means that all the ire is leveled at the opposing party so much that they can't point it at anyone else really. It's not just "russia is destroying our democracy" it's that "russia is using the republican party to destroy our democracy". The whole system is so schizophrenic it has turned our entire political system stupid.

Yeah, the pictures are all unrelated, I think this is what he's talking about :
https://www.world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Chinese-molten-salt-reactor-cleared-for-start-up

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMSR-LF1

quote:

In January 2011, CAS launched a CNY3 billion (USD444 million) R&D programme on liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTRs), known there as the thorium-breeding molten-salt reactor (Th-MSR or TMSR), and claimed to have the world's largest national effort on it, hoping to obtain full intellectual property rights on the technology. This is also known as the fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR). The TMSR Centre at SINAP at Jiading, Shanghai, is responsible.

Construction of the 2 MWt TMSR-LF1 reactor began in September 2018 and was reportedly completed in August 2021. The prototype was scheduled to be completed in 2024, but work was accelerated.

"According to the relevant provisions of the Nuclear Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Safety Supervision and Administration of Civilian Nuclear Facilities, our bureau has conducted a technical review of the application documents you submitted, and believes that your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor commissioning plan (Version V1.3) is acceptable and is hereby approved," the Ministry of Ecology and Environment told SINAP on 2 August.

It added: "During the commissioning process of your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor, you should strictly implement this plan to ensure the effectiveness of the implementation of the plan and ensure the safety and quality of debugging. If any major abnormality occurs during the commissioning process, it should be reported to our bureau and the Northwest Nuclear and Radiation Safety Supervision Station in time."

The TMSR-LF1 will use fuel enriched to under 20% U-235, have a thorium inventory of about 50 kg and conversion ratio of about 0.1. A fertile blanket of lithium-beryllium fluoride (FLiBe) with 99.95% Li-7 will be used, and fuel as UF4.

The project is expected to start on a batch basis with some online refuelling and removal of gaseous fission products, but discharging all fuel salt after 5-8 years for reprocessing and separation of fission products and minor actinides for storage. It will proceed to a continuous process of recycling salt, uranium and thorium, with online separation of fission products and minor actinides. The reactor will work up from about 20% thorium fission to about 80%.

If the TMSR-LF1 proves successful, China plans to build a reactor with a capacity of 373 MWt by 2030.

As this type of reactor does not require water for cooling, it will be able to operate in desert regions. The Chinese government has plans to build more across the sparsely populated deserts and plains of western China, complementing wind and solar plants and reducing China's reliance on coal-fired power stations. The reactor may also be built outside China in Belt and Road Initiative nations.

The liquid fuel design is descended from the 1960s Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA.
