Fanatical has the Arkham Knight bundle with the season pass for ~$7 so I decided to pick it up after skipping it at launch. Because of the technical issues people were having with it I just kinda disregarded it entirely when it came out, but I have been playing Arkham City a bit over the past week and was curious about Knight. City is very good but feels like an old game at this point in a lot of ways, and after an hour or so in Arkham Knight this definitely feels like City but less cludgy which is awesome and just what I wanted. I can see the complaints about the car though, I just got done thinking about how much fun it is gliding around that city when the next mission introduced the car. It's a neat idea, the combat in the car is kinda fun, but when the gliding feels as good as it does it means I'd much rather be doing that to get around instead of following a racing line driving my bat car. Still though, it's crazy that the traversal in Gotham Knights looks so dull considering there was a great open world gliding mechanic as far back as City.

AK doesn't have annoying loot stuff like GK does, right? I've only ever played Asylum and keep thinking I should play those other two games but then again I should probably also play Shadow of War instead.

I don't think Arkham Knight has any loot mechanics in it, no.

Edited for clarification. Too many Arkham/Gotham/Knight/Knights

that means that the devs specifically excluded that game for those countries, but it probably wouldn't have been available in Germany even without that

I mention it every time this game comes up, and the issue with the car is that the game's skill points are shared between batman and the batmobile, and the batmobile sections are easy until near the end and there's a huge jump in difficulty and you may really regret not putting points into the batmobile by then.

I think all the complaints about the batmobile would've been moot if they had separated out the skill points.

In both Cultic and Prodeus I relied mostly on the context menu/wheel for switching weapons and only bound 1-4 for specific weapons. Sometimes, like in Doom Eternal, I use 1234qezxc, but that's mainly if I need to be swapping back and forth constantly in the middle of shooting.

I have a Razer Naga and the 12 button MMO side plate was good for FFXIV (I set the hotbars to the same shape as the button plate so I could just push the buttons by visual position) but I could never use it for anything actiony. I don't want to have to use my right hand for anything other than the most basic of combat actions. I usually just use the side plate with two buttons and bind them to like melee and slide or something.

WASD is younger than key remapping or even mouselook
it was partially popularized after an early "pro gamer" guy named Thresh aka Dennis Fong got famous for winning Quake 1 tournaments and everyone started copying his keybinds

quote:

The evidence can be found on old bulletin board systems. hIn one thread from 1997, a poster recommends using Q and E to strafe and A and D to turn. Another suggests using the keypad for movement, and someone else says they use A, Shift, Z, X. It wasn't the case that everyone simply gravitated to the 'obvious' choice of WASD or ESDF, and in another thread, we see how Thresh's performance in the Quake tournament spread his style. His play was so impressive, the poster looking for his config speculates that it was impossible for him to turn so fast with a mouse.

Another legend, Quake programmer John Carmack, took note. “Even when I was hanging out with Carmack, wherever, at E3, random people would come up and he would hear them asking me what my configuration was,” says Fong. “So he ended up building a Thresh stock config into Quake 2.”

It was a relief. Not only could Fong sit down at any computer with Quake 2 and instantly load his configuration, every time he got the question, all he had to say was “type exec thresh.cfg.”

Convenient as it was, Fong doesn’t think the inclusion of his config was the main factor in the rise of WASD, and I’d agree. By the time Quake 2 was out, WASD was starting to feel like common knowledge. I used it, and I don’t remember hearing Thresh’s name associated with it at the time, though it’s possible his configuration entered my consciousness two or three people removed.

And yet games, strangely, took a while to catch up. Carmack may have bundled Thresh’s config with Quake 2, but when it released in 1997 the default controls were still arrow keys. A year later, though, that changed. If Thresh's Quake tournament win was WASD's first watershed moment, the second came in 1998 with the release of Half-Life. The Quake and Doom players at Valve—perhaps influenced directly or indirectly by Carmack, Thresh, and other top Doom and Quake players—included WASD in Half-Life’s default keyboard and mouse config, which helped solidify it as the first-person shooter standard.

The default quake 1 config looks like this:

I had never heard of ESDF until today. It definitely makes sense but I don't know. I learned WASD when my mom bought me half-life 1 in 2000. I'm not confident that 22 years and thousands of hours of gaming is going to make a change like that easy

Speaking of Dead Cells, they dropped a patch overnight US hours adding more indie darling-themed weapons into the game.

Game is great (I recently put a bunch of time in it and got to and beat the 5BC spoiler boss), but it's weakened my aging X360 controller's RB trigger considerably, heh.

Since I can't really replace it 1:1 cheaply being in Japan (I already had to replace the face button pad by cannibalizing an older controller with D-pad failure), is their any 3rd-party controller that anyone would recommend, or do I bite the bullet and just get a Bone pad?
