Just means your soil is hosed. Add mulch, water and keep doing that until the worms come back. Uh, give it some time. Making bad soil into good soil takes a while. edit - When in doubt add trees for shade and water retention. DancingShade has issued a correction as of 11:20 on Nov 9, 2022 |

I still see plenty of earthworms. I'm also seeing dandelions flowering in "winter" for the first time though, so I'm not exactly celebrating.

Earthworms being invasive to the pnw was one of the weirdest things I ever learned. It just went so counter to everything I'd ever been taught lol. Anyway got tons of em where they shouldn't be.

silicone thrills posted:Earthworms being invasive to the pnw was one of the weirdest things I ever learned. It just went so counter to everything I'd ever been taught lol. Yeah, that was a real moment for me too. Now there's 3 species in the interior of the province they think might be native from ancestors that survived in unglaciated refugia. Surprised they didn't evolve fur coats while they were at it. Lots of earthworms here but that would have something to do with multiple large compost heaps and a manure pile. If you build it they will come. My neighbour paid some Gulf Island hippie $25 for a package of red wigglers when he started composting. If I'd known I would have given him a couple of scoops from my kitchen waste composters and only charged him . I fail at capitalism. So after the endless summer we had 10 days of fall (along with 2 atmospheric rivers) and we've been hit with wet snow and below freezing temperatures for the last three days. I'm thinking it's not good to have your fruit trees still fully leafed out with frozen snow on them. Hopefully there won't be too many dead tips come spring. Like everbearing raspberries common figs have two crops during the year - an early Breba crop on last year's wood and a later ripening main crop this year's growth. We mainly grow San Pedro varieties that produce a large Breba crop and pick off the main crop figs when they're little because they won't have enough time left to ripen. Some experts think we should leave them on just in case the stars align and we have enough heat in the fall to ripen them. I think we can safely file that idea in the bit bucket. Despite our endless summer none of the main crop ripened, just fell off when the atmospheric rivers hit. Like the other deciduous trees I have a bad feeling about next spring's growth. But sure, let's just run rail lines north and start hauling dirt up there, or ramp up our plastic and energy needs to grow everything hydroponic or aeroponically. I'm sure with a bit of ingenuity it will all work out fine.
