super interesting. i didn't even know about those early Yen movies and they look incredible to me now, but I can see why they didn't land at the time.

Hitman's Holiday: different director than the first one, with much flashier camera movement that I don't think was really necessary but thankfully didn't detract much. It had completely comical songs/soundtrack throughout , as befitting its direct to dvd bloodline, but unsurprisingly, it absolutely delivered like only scott adkins can. all the fights were great, i think the freya one was my favorite gunfu fight I've seen in a long while and the ninja guy was fantastic

Also caught raging fire. Nicholas tse was better than expected, Donnie yen had two standout fights, some real good gun stuff throughout, and then right in the middle was one of the most awful cgi padded car/motorcycle scenes I've ever seen with an awful ending to it, yikes
i made a gif of my favorite scene in it, but i'm not sure it's yen doing this vs a stuntman. if it's him, how does he do this poo poo in his late 50s

There's some really good research and stuff out there and the answer is: if an older person continues to train and stretch they still can be remarkably powerful and "youthful" even into their 70s. It's losing the ability to easily recover from injury and genetic stuff like arthritis that takes them out, but assuming they take care these guys could easily keeping plugging into their late 60s.

Also steroids. :)

Anyway I love Judo in action scenes so thank you for posting that, good poo poo. It's actually not as bad as it looks.

Gotta love Donnie. Tiger Cage 2 and In the Line of Duty 4 rock.

Rewatched Blade and saw Blade II recently, now I remember the thread title! What a line. And Donnie was good to see in Blade II.

Been meaning to watch Yes Madam and those older Michelle flicks too.

I know I'm a little late, but I just watched Carter and while overall wasn't great and I think I ended up with CTE (though I thought it was really neat camara work, took me 3 sittings to get through tough but still technically fantastic IMO)... but that opening fight scene is loving BANANAS. At first I was horrified and with the POV view it made it feel like I just murdered 300 people in a sauna.

I think it's the most violent thing I've ever seen in my life, and it just kept going and going, it made all those Raid/Iko movies look like Mr. Dressup.

I've been waiting over 3 years to finally see this movie after seeing the original trailer back in 2019

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBWdUf7wfaE

It's been held up by tons of legal battles and of course covid but it's finally out! I got a chance to do so at a limited screening in Bellevue, WA last night. Absolutely amazing and exceeded all my expectations. What's even better is that's it's an insanely elevated / can't-believe-it-actually-exists remake of the ultra-campy "Maula Jatt" (1979) featuring Sultan Rahi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1Ayb4Ydss8

And just in case you need an additional taste of what Sultan Rahi was all about :

I finally watched it due to this post and I didn't think it was more violent than night comes for us. That camera though, woof. It's like watching a michael bay movie except every edit is instead the camera spinning or flipping. my review of it is 'spiritual successor to hardcore henry'

hell of a followup to villainess , though. I kept thinking it was ripping off that movie without realizing it was the same director

Merci, chaton!
Carter was utterly ludicrous but also a lot of fun, as much out of admiration for their sheer commitment to the gimmick as the action itself. Stretching the church fight from Kingsman out for an entire movie and starting with the hero knife-fighting 50 naked guys in a bathhouse only to keep escalating from there to end with helicopter-fu is a hell of an achievement.

No, doing it well would have been an achievement. Doing it as clumsily as he did isn't. It really annoyed me since the team clearly had the ambition and the resources to do something great but the director consistently made terrible decisions that looked like poo poo. It was a shock and a tragedy when, during the chase involving vans, the camera stopped moving long enough for me to realise the choreography was really good, but undercut by an incredibly stupid gimmick.

Just watched parts 5 & 4 of the Roruni Kenshin movies on netflix and.. they're really good. The action choreography is fantastic, as well as the camera work. I was thinking while watching how it was essentially the platonic ideal of swordfight cinematography. I'm going to have to check out the earlier 3 now.

I recommend starting with the prequel first if you haven't seen any, it opens with some great action

the first action scene in the first netflix film is especially impressive (very minor spoilers) the hero is brought in, captured and bound. Of course he's not actually captured, it's just a way for him to get close. Most scenes of that type have a cheat. Ropes suddenly snap or something, or one of his captors was in on it. This doesn't have one. The guy fights his way out, while bound, and his physical performance is good enough that you completely believe it. I've not seen that before.

Having now watched all 5 of them, I have to agree. The original trilogy, especially the first one, is weaker than the final movies because of some of the anime silliness going on, but the action choreography and filming of it is simply incredible. I can't think of anything else that didn't wear out its welcome like this - take the Wicks for example, where by the third one I was getting sick of the same grapple -> headshot moves over and over.
Having a bunch of side characters with their own fighting style definitely helped, but every single one of Kenshin's big melees and all his duels were just great. I think the fight I liked 'least' was against shishio and it was still really good.

I watched them out of order but I think that's ok (watched 5,4,1,2,3) - 1, 4 &5 are all on Netflix. 5 is the 'prequel' and you might as well start with it.
I jumped into 4 right after 5 since it was filmed simultaneously and I just rolled with whoever showed up and figured if they weren't actively fighting him they were friends or at least frenemies. Worked pretty well.

I always overlooked it because 'live action manga/anime adaptation' is usually completely awful but hey, what the hell. Frankly, you'll know if you're liking it within 5 minutes of the prequel because that's the type of action you're going to keep getting.

To be clear the names are:
1: Origins
2: Kyoto Inferno
3: Legend Falls
4: The Final
5: The beginning . this is the prequel.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
Mat Kilau is a pretty bad film but it does have lots of silat, which is relatively rare in movies.

The film is incredibly ultra-nationalistic, seems like every five seconds someone mentions the glory of Allah or their ancestral Malay lands. The British officers (and some of their associated Sikh soldiers - there don't seem to be any British grunts for some reason) are cartoon-villain levels of evil and are played by extremely bad actors, including a Belgian guy with a really weird dyejob.

As a half-Malay Brit, all this is extremely funny to me but I'm not sure there's much here to recommend to anyone who doesn't have such a connection.

edit: it does have Yayan Ruhian from The Raid

Yeah I'll watch any movie with Yayan in it, he seems to have a decent career as the bad guy in various asian flicks. He has a pretty good role in a netflix movie called Ben & Jody about a couple of baristas who cross paths with violent illegal loggers.

Anyway yeah Mat Kilau was pretty bad, even if they did take the martial arts stuff seriously.
