What's the best phone for root now? Is it still oneplus because of the no warranty void?

Probably, but at this point I take it for granted that you can make it work as long as you can unlock the bootloader. That's not a forgone conclusion; historically it's been a matter of breaking in through security holes. But I've rooted a Pixel and a Pixel 2, for example, and though I can't say it went off without a hitch, it is clear that even if Google felt zero obligation to divert from their design intentions to support super users, they also had absolutely no interest in preventing you from loving around if you just demonstrated the competence to send a fastboot command. And when I hit a boot-loop, their complete archive of OEM images and the handy flash scripts they include with them is about as much help as I could ask for.

I'm running a nexus 4 currently rooted and running a custom rom of course of Android 10 and I have to say the experience has been surprisingly great. I have been able to multitask quite well and basically run anything from the play store with no problems that isn't google maps and apart from the poo poo tier battery life and degrading rubber I quite like this phone and have actually been dailying it. I would like to know has anyone else had a great experience with a ancient device such as mine where installing a custom rom suddenly made your device a million times more usable to the point where you actually daily it?

They allow unlocking the bootloader right from the drat settings menu! hoppits posted:I'm running a nexus 4 currently rooted and running a custom rom of course of Android 10 and I have to say the experience has been surprisingly great. I'm not big into custom roms because of bullshit like "calling 911 doesn't work" or "certain radio frequencies not supported" that seems to plague every release but back in the day a custom ROM absolutely made my HTC Thunderbolt a way better phone. I also installed LineageOS on my Nexus 5x (it's still my "phone to use while broken phone gets fixed" phone) and I have to say I like it a lot. However most of that is because of the customizations that are available, and I find that Gravitybox is light-years ahead of it on the stock AOSP Google ROM. By the way you now can pass Safetynet with root again.

sourdough posted:This is why I root Hello, yes my baby got a tablet for christmas. But he's not getting his hands on this tablet till he can prove he can put a square peg through a square hole. So now I have a tablet: An Amazon 7 Fire Kidz. I also took a linux course for work so now I'm into linux. So I guess that means rooting this tablet for children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRCpJvJuu1c I'm thinking about using this dude's git package, he seems legit, but I haven't been into linux since 2006, so I don't know how the landscape has changed. Where do I find a listing or library of programs? My intention is to start curating a baby's library full of zoobooks pdfs and bookmarked pages to the local library's web service. I don't know if the Kids edition is something different, but I figure the usual 7 can be hacked pretty trivially with the Fire Toolbox if you mostly want it for the Play Store and maybe a custom launcher. I did it for my Fire 10 and it's a decent enough little device. It's not full root and has it moments of annoyance (like having to re-set the launcher after updates), but I'm definitely not missing the days of loving with superuser and poo poo on my old Android 2.X and 4.X devices. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/windows-tool-fire-toolbox-v26-1.3889604/

Soo i have this shoebox full of Samsung A10e phones. I was going to fire one up for my lil kid but its secured by someone's google. I've already factory reset the phone so there's no data on it. Just someone's FRP crap. I googled around but couldn't find any free tools. Is there a free tool for OSX that'll help me wipe this stupid phone? I ended up finding a phone that'll work for me, but I'm just curious about this step in case someone decides to offer me a million bucks to blow up a phone and rebuild it from scratch.

I rediscovered an ancient B&N Nook Tablet that I'd like to turn into an Android tablet. Most of the information online is from 2012, so what's the best method to do this in the year 2022?

Is there an up to date guide to rooting anywhere? The OP is very out of date. I have a Nokia 7 Plus that way out of warranty and stuck on Android 10 and i'd love to stick 13 on.

Just look up your phone/tablet on the xda-developers forum. If what you need isn't on there you're probably SOL. Usually it's something like Unlock Bootloader > Install Recovery > Install new ROM (if you want) and OpenGapps or similar > Install Magisk (the actual root thingy).

I would like to ask a potentially dumb question: Mother is becoming a scout leader and I'm looking at getting a nice rugged phone for her that'll last a good few days on battery. Been looking at a bunch of rugged phones with big ol' batteries that are made by companies (doogee, ulefone, blackview) that I have very little faith in keeping phones updated and spyware-free. Other than following preset instructions for putting lineageos on my OP7tpro I don't have much experience in the world of messing around with android. I've been reading a bit about Generic System Images and I'm wondering if it'd be easy to slap one on the phone and have the important functions work? I can't seem to find any specific guides or premade roms for most of the phones I'm looking at.

Most rom development seems to be on telegram these days for whatever reason, if you search for your device you've a decent hope of finding something there.
