it’s pretty crazy how even today Europeans HATE Romani, my only exposure to them was in fiction with the whole traveling circus fortune telling thing but man was I surprised when I went to Europe how much they were not liked.

the hatred of travellers is not purely ethnic, it's also to a large extent sedentiary populations' contempt and rage at non-sedentiary populations which are perceived as breaching the basic social contract. this of course spills over into racialised hate very easily and frequently, sometimes in weird ways - in norway, a lot of the foreign-born roma carry romanian passports and so a lot of the racism gets extended to romanians in general. meanwhile the "indigenous" travelling population, the romani/tater people, have been getting sort of pushed out of the public imagination and while there is still real bigotry there it's much less than what it used to be.

Its basically ethnic hatred as folk wisdom. Mincéirí (Irish travellers) and Romani have basically never had any meaningful representation in the organs of the states that they exist in. Afaict the only political project that would have addressed their existence by default, and represented them appropriately would have been Maoism. We didn't get Maoism in northern europe, we got empire, liberal democracy and War. As it stands they have remained as stateless or inter-national ethnic/cultural groups that aren't belonging to any one state and there for are not really anyone's responsibility. The state violence inflicted upon them, passively, is rooted in the aforementioned folkloric accepted wisdom of the populations of these states. Mincéirí have been on the receiving end of Oppression with Irish Characteristics since before the formation of the state and when, we had our essentially petty bourgeois revolution they had no seat at the table, and never did. Things have improved somewhat over the course of my lifetime with increased government spending on halting sites and other infrastructure and education. However the state still shrugs its shoulders wrt to the healthcare and welfare of people from the travelling community. Irelands prisons are a case study in and of themselves of what a liberal state perpetuates in its function, which is to say Travellers are to the irish prison system as black people are to the american one.

To expand on this point, they do this by for example: "Not working" - The traditional role of a "tinker" in society was mending pots and pans, also work related to horses and logistics and so on. The modern era destroyed this role in society, laissez faire style and replaced it with nothing, with no work and no position in Europes quite rigid social hierarchies, criminality is inevitable as a means to an end. The end being, not starving. They have been ignored by the states that should be creating the conditions that the people need to thrive, but there is no political will for such a project outside of the careers of left activist politicians like Michael D Higgins.
