I mean if all you consume is tik toks and Instagram reels, the idea of a book with 700 pages must be super alien. Sitting down, reading each line, turning a page, lol.

Every parent ever has said that about their children with whatever the newest form of entertainment was. Don't do this.

Edit: if I'm going to snipe I might as well add my favorite example. In Dragnet there's a scene where the protagonist rants about "kids these days" and one of the examples he points out is instant orange juice.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The people who complain the most about kids not reading don't read.

It's a lot like how boomers complained about TV rots your brain then have spent decades doing nothing but watching TV and demonstrating their brains rotting.

I've heard more or less the same sentiment from an elderly relative of my wife's who insists that there's noting worth knowing that can't fit into a magazine article, anything more is a frivolous waste of time better spent working or praying.

It's pretty standard anti-intellectual tripe: people who delve into these topics are just wasting time with hot air when they could apply common sense and write it shorter, no topic is complex enough to need that kind of explanation, and complex topics aren't worth exploring or understanding when you could be doing "real" work instead, with the definition of real hinging on what their particular ideological angle is.

Enjoy Socrates complaining about reading & writing corrupting the youth in Plato's Phaedrus:

quote:

...this discovery of yours [writing] will create forgetfulness in the learners' souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember of themselves. The specific which you have discovered is an aid not to memory, but to reminiscence, and you give your disciples not truth, but only the semblance of truth; they will be hearers of many things and will have learned nothing...

Funny you mention that, a corporate lawyer for FTX was the one who hatched a scheme at another defunct online casino to defraud players

After the first one that would happen, and the video of its owner being chainsawed decapitated gets out shortly after, that would be it.
Crypto would be more regulated than banks.
