To top it all off the level of resignations at Twitter meant that musk has to pay out more in employee severance than Twitter will make off of $8 a month for checkboxes for the entire year.

Like who wouldn't take 3 months of severance in NOVEMBER the holidays are about to start and that's enough to get a month into the next year or so. Which means a good amount of time to secure a new job.

This has to top it in terms of stupidity of the tech titans. It's loving hilariously blunderous and such a bro "YOUR EITHER IN OR YOUR OUT" mentality coupled with "money is no issue because I have to separate myself from that as a concept", that you get Musk. He will not stop until it all comes crashing down.

Remember like ... two loving weeks ago when Elon strolled in the front door with his sink and had some Big Important Meetings and the VP muckety-mucks were sending around these big enthused Slack messages to the whole company talking about how he has been briefed on all the various initiatives like Bluebird and Goldbird and how he "gets it" and how excited they were to be getting steered in the right direction and there were great days ahead for the company??

I mean just to be clear I've written at least two different small "Twitter-like" messaging platforms over the course of my career, basically just toys and POCs, hardly more than a bag-on-the-side feature of one hobby website or another, where nothing more important than people doing art trades with each other or calling each other C-words was ever in play content-wise

And to not store all the messages, or minimally DMs, encrypted at rest in the database would never have crossed my mind as an option

Frankly, if this really is the case, it is a loving fantastic object lesson in the fundamental problems with the way the internet has become structured and if this really does cause a major collapse of internet social infrastructure then I sincerely hope something better comes up in its wake. I am finding it sincerely hard to mourn for this ugly behemoth. The internet has been genuinely the worse for its presence. The fact is that all of this artifice was built on something so paper thin that a bumbling dipshit with enough money could roll in and kill it in a matter of weeks. The tree was rotten the whole time

nah man. Even when it's an ugly beast, I can't stress enough how much having a centralised comms platform had levelled the playing field for people. At least, waaaaay more than, say, individual blogs. There's gonna be a significant hole in the internet after this. And it sucks.

Like I don't think I'm going to see this on most websites. Maybe reddit? But definitely not on Tiktok. There's been a passive observation that Twitter's feed has been unique for. Do I need to see this?. But I can't think of another social network that would make it available.

Side lol at all the people who were stupid enough to pay $8.- for a service that immediately got killed and probably won’t make it back. They now likely won’t even get a full month out of the monthly subscription, can’t change their screen name, and are getting relentlessly mocked for trying to buy clout

Honestly if you weren’t deleting messages back when the deal first broke you’re probably screwed, the accounts are still in a sort of limbo for at least a month where they can be reactivated and even beyond that who knows what retention there was.

The further back the less likely anyone still there knows how to retrieve them at least.

Yeah, there are freelancers, artists, sex workers, etc. who will have their lives upended with the loss of Twitter as a networking, outreach, and client acquisition tool. Watching all of this go down is hilarious — and I agree that Twitter has caused irreparable harm on other aspects of society — but the impact of it is going to be massive on a lot of folks just trying to live.

the problem is that unless you architect the entire service around E2EE, the backend needs to have the decryption keys to hand for all that data so it being encrypted at rest counts for very little

signal does it, but signal is intentionally very simple, scaling that out to the complexity of something like twitter or discord without making it a usability nightmare is an open problem

That's kind of the issue. You say monolithic, I say ubiquitous. It's so much easier to say "follow me at this thing" vs. "follow me on like... 10 diff things? idk, good luck".

I'm going to mourn the thing, sorry. There'll be something after this, and maybe better? But maybe worse. It wasn't great, but it *was* stable for awhile. I'm going to mourn that stability.
