The other point I'm making here is that there are some jobs that just don't let you work the hours that you'd like to work and they're essential jobs. Collecting garbage sucks rear end but imagine if we lost all the loving garbage collectors. The right way to go about this is to honestly lower the wages for poo poo like Twitter engineers and increase the wages and lower the work time for garbage collectors so they need to do it every loving day.

You're right, I was a little hyperbolic and made the issue seem more zero-sum than it is. But the issue I see is one of "people with the hardest jobs get the fewest benefits, so give them more and if that means that those of us who can have to live with less, that's ok. Just a random note but I used to work in an office programming garbage runs and honestly it's a decent job in the UK - public sector which means 20 days paid leave minimum going up to 25 for 5 year seniority (plus 8 bank holidays ), hours are 7-3 on a 4 on/3 off rota, all your safety gear and training included free, and if anybody asks you to lift anything too heavy without the right gear you have a shouty union man dying to get into it with management. I'd take it over working at a supermarket any day.

Tech work in Europe is something else. I'm a computer toucher from the United States and even when I take vacation I'm still basically available in an emergency. My European counterparts go on vacation and their Auto responder basically says you will not hear from me for the next 20 days no matter what happens, sorry. Also come August the entire European side of our company basically shuts down and that's just how it is regardless of what projects or catastrophic issues we are dealing with. Jealous
