This is absolutely happening, but it will take at least a full quarter for Twitter to die of financial problems, maybe even half a year before it happens. If you want an exciting end to it all, it will have to be due to infrastructure and server issues. Twitter's still doomed even if the servers somehow hold up, but watching it die from money problems will take way longer and be way more boring.

It'll be interesting to see what Elon comes up with to try and solve Twitter's money problems. I'm guessing he'll roll out more "features" like $8 verification to try and nickel-and-dime his chud followers, and odds are these new features will be pretty buggy on release, and will likely make Twitter's technical issues worse.
