I guess how I would describe it is that foils always *could* curl, but nowadays they're basically guaranteed to, and oftentimes will be curled even before you open the product. It's pretty BS.

Grifter posted:I am going to draft at a LGS tomorrow. This is only the second time I have done an LGS draft and the first one was about fifteen years ago. How do these things typically go and are there any helpful tips? I know how to draft (I used to draft cubes with friends regularly) and play on arena, I just don't normally go into shops. As mentioned, bring a notepad and writing utensil for life tracking(much better and a lot easier to avoid anything getting messed up than with dice), and bring dice for counters, etc. If you've got them, bring some sleeves and basic lands of your own. Sleeves you could pick up at your LGS I'm sure(or just run your stuff unsleeved), but save yourself some effort, and I've always just found it easier to bring my own basics rather than deal with having to get them from the store(and remember to return them afterward). Aside from those 2, it's draft. You say you're already good there, so anything else would have to be answered by the LGS/person running the event. Glhf!

I can't find it now but they had a post from their vp of manufacturing on the mothership that deflected and claimed it wasn't an issue. This was during the height of when it was really really bad, maybe ixalan era? That guy was eventually let go and things got somewhat better for a while but I feel they're almost as bad as that again. It's ironic because they keep inventing new foil treatments to induce demand for the many many extra variants that they can overcharge for but for me it's a nonstarter if you can't even put them in a loving deck. What a joke.

i do think all the different attempts at foiling techniques are partially to find a new technique that people both like and doesn't curl as badly, and i think some of them are much better at not curling than others? i've never held a foil card in my life though so this all secondhand to me

You can practice foiling techniques in a lab before you start mass producing 20 different ones that all don't work

Curling is an issue that's already been solved, is the thing. Older cards and foils from other card games just do not come pre-curled like new magic cards do, and hold up way better. I guess using better cardstock would cut into secret lair profits too much or something.

The methods of foiling aren’t the issue and continuing to post like it might be is very confusing. The reasons mtg are curling at the rate they are is because the card stock is cheap poo poo. That’s it. They can’t do anything but choose to not be cheap assholes when printing the cards. That’s it. Mystery solved.

Obviously anecdotal but my group started drafting again this summer for the first time in a while, and while going through some of the sets we missed in lockdown some of them just felt lovely. Like oddly smooth or oily feeling, and slightly thin and bendy. I wanna say maybe Strixhaven was particularly bad, but I could be misremembering.

There are a lot of cards where the whole thing is a dull level of shiny, and then the art has specific highlights that are extra shiny. If they just had those shiny highlights in the art, but didn't foil the rest of the card at all, it wouldn't curl. The curl is because the card back absorbs moisture and expands while the foil layer stays the same size.

Yeah this is how most card games traditionally do foils and it not only doesn't curl, it also doesn't add enough weight to "feel" or cut to it so you can actually, you know, play them

I'm thinking I might flip some to goons at their retail price, shipped, and maybe do some kind of charity thing with some of them. I'm aiming to pay off a significant home repair loan asap, so these extras will help a good bit towards that.

I'm definitely not the only person who had their order duplicated multiple times and sent to them for free, someone upthread also got 8 instead of the 4 they ordered, I believe. wouldn't surprise me if they did this to a bunch of people. was there even a limit to the amount you could possibly order? it should've been capped at 4 at the most(for people who would want playsets I guess), and really shouldn't have been a limited run item in the first place.

Xerox is all about copying. Xerox was the first really big name in photocopying. This is my guess based on the now outdated term “xeroxing” in everyday life, not mtg stuff.
