Keep On Shroomin

Are the people mad because they think the crowd should be masked or mad because they wouldn’t be allowed to not be masked at a similar event in China? I know there’s some serious protests against continued lockdown going on right now but I don’t know if that’s necessarily what’s causing the censorship

It’s a little bit nuts. On the one hand, the protests are really widespread which suggests some level of organisation even if it’s just student groups talking to each other, on the other hand, everyone seems pretty pissed off right now and this is a convenient escape valve for those feelings.

My more conspiracy minded friends reckon this is an intentional lull in enforcement and censorship to draw out malcontents and then publicly crush them, now that Xi has the army onside and has replaced the cabinet with his own guys. That seems a bit far fetched but then it’s 2022 and virtually nothing would surprise me any more.

I'm no expert on China, but I know a few things about protests and unrest and man China currently has any number of major things that in other countries would get people out in the street so the simplest answers are all 'people are just pissed off and don't feel like putting up with more bullshit.' That theorized reason isn't impossible, but why do it at a time when there are already a handful of other crises either simmering or on the verge of boiling over? China has, for as long as I can remember, erred heavily on the side of putting protests down as soon as humanly possible lest they spread and become a discrete movement. The baseline level of discontent seems far too high to take the risk of letting a protest movement manifest as a trap. That said, I know gently caress all about Xi's thinking so I could well be wrong.

'Why now?' is indeed a compelling question, but I can't help but come back to the surplus of things that people have to be fed up with. Plus if people in the internal security services also want covid restrictions relaxed or removed, good luck getting them to go after protestors with their customary zeal.

With that said, I'm not a china understander, so I by all means defer to people more familiar with the local circumstances.

People are mad because they wouldn't be allowed to be unmasked. Or I guess, it's not so much about the masks themselves than it is watching people just living normal lives while currently things are very not normal here and everyone's just kinda being like "what's the point?"

Because this is actually affecting most people and in very obvious ways. A lot of the things people talk about that are reasons for people to be that pissed off in China, they're not affecting that many people directly so no one cares all that much or doesn't wanna gently caress up what they got going.

One of the big deals about it is that it's loving with people's money, but people don't feel comfortable saying that. There are laws in place that, at least for shorter lockdowns, require workers to still be paid. Enforcement is just about 0 though unless you can afford a lawyer and don't mind torching your job. So, lots of people are just locked down not getting paid, at least in Zhengzhou. And that's enough to get people going. We just entered our 2nd lockdown for this wave, the cause of which is unclear, we were "technically not locked down" a little bit ago but things didn't open up and it was still pretty much lockdown, and cases skyrocketed then. At our peak we were officially "not locked down."

Now cases have gone down and then they decided to have another lockdown. That was after 3 days of "it starts tonight at midnight!" rumors which caused panic buying every day. The panic buying ends up with pissed off people too (though thats just a little extra) cuz then you can't find poo poo.

quote:

Strengthen confidence, do a solid job in the prevention and control of the epidemic

Zhong Yin, "People's Daily" (Version 01, November 27, 2022)

Increase the market volume and reserve of daily necessities to ensure sufficient supply and stable prices of important livelihood commodities in areas affected by the epidemic; coordinate and efficiently accelerate the implementation of the tasks of "four mornings", "four responses and four exhaustions", and daily settlements to achieve results. The efficiency of control work has been continuously improved; 8 measures for the resumption of work and production of industrial enterprises have been formulated to gradually restore the order of production and life; In the face of the current complex and severe epidemic prevention and control situation, all regions and departments have conscientiously implemented the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the decision-making and deployment of the Party Central Committee to further improve the scientificity, precision and effectiveness of prevention and control. Curb the spread of the epidemic as soon as possible, and resolutely build a barrier for epidemic prevention and control.

This global pandemic of the century has been repeatedly protracted, posing a serious threat to people's life safety and health, and seriously affecting the development of the world economy. It is a severe test for all countries. Protecting people's life safety and health is the primary consideration for our country's formulation of epidemic prevention and control policies, and it is also the primary standard for measuring the effectiveness of epidemic prevention and control. In the past three years, from the perspective of the overall population level, the number of deaths and hospitalizations of new coronary pneumonia in our country is far lower than the global average. Whether it is morbidity or mortality, the Chinese people are the least affected by the epidemic. Although there is a certain gap between our country's per capita medical resources and the level of medical technology compared with developed countries, the average life expectancy has risen steadily in the past two years. In 2020, our country will reach 77.93 years, an increase of 0.63 years from 2019, and it will increase to 78.2 years in 2021. age. From the perspective of economic and social development, our country will be the only major global economy to achieve positive economic growth in 2020. In 2021, our country's economic aggregate will account for more than 18% of the global economic aggregate. Since the beginning of this year, the overall national economy has continued to recover. keep it steady. Under the background of a century of changes and a century of epidemics, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of new crowns in the world has exceeded 636 million, the cumulative number of deaths has exceeded 6.6 million, and the global economic recovery is fragile and weak. Major and positive results in economic and social development have not come easily!

It is very difficult to deal with it with scientific strategies. Under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, our country insists on putting people first and life first, insisting on external defense import and internal defense rebound, insisting on dynamic clearing and unwavering, optimizing and improving prevention and control measures according to the time and situation, and actively responding to the global epidemic situation. The severe impact of multiple rounds of large-scale spread of the epidemic has fully demonstrated our country's solid strength and strong ability to prevent and control the epidemic, and fully demonstrated the significant advantages of the leadership of the Communist Party of China and our country's socialist system. Facts have fully proved that our prevention and control policy is determined by the nature and purpose of the party, our prevention and control policy can stand the test of history, and our prevention and control measures are scientific and effective, the most economical and the most effective of. There is no doubt about this, and we should have full confidence.

To win this battle of normalized epidemic prevention and control, we must resolutely overcome problems such as insufficient understanding, insufficient preparation, and insufficient work, resolutely overcome misunderstandings such as contempt, indifference, and self-righteousness, and resolutely overcome paralyzed thinking, war weariness, fluke mentality, and lax mentality. , unify thoughts and actions into the decision-making and deployment of the Party Central Committee, adhere to the ninth edition of the prevention and control plan, implement the 20 optimization measures, do not waver or lose shape, maintain strategic determination, strengthen confidence in victory, and grasp the reality with the spirit of not waiting for others Grasp the work of epidemic prevention and control.

The normalized epidemic prevention and control is a arduous and arduous task, and it requires persistent persistence. The ability to test is a test of endurance. In the face of the recent situation of wide spread of local epidemics across the country, many transmission chains, and the spread of the epidemic, we must strengthen our confidence and be cautious in the end, fully implement the quadrilateral responsibilities of territories, departments, units, and individuals, based on prevention and early prevention , Based on speed, try our best to cut off the source of infection, control the spread of the epidemic, resolutely prevent the new ignition of the epidemic, and ensure that the epidemic does not rebound. We must do our best to ensure the production and living services of the people, effectively meet the basic needs of life during the epidemic, and solve the urgent and anxious problems of the people in a timely manner, so as to warm people's hearts, gather people's hearts, and strengthen their confidence with tangible work results. We must not only adopt more scientific, more perfect, more precise, and more effective strategic measures, but also maintain firm and resolute courage and perseverance. The results of the control are in vain.

"Sailing against the current, if you don't advance, you will retreat", only by persisting to the end can we usher in the final victory. Strengthen confidence, strengthen fighting spirit, fight against the virus with the most resolute attitude, deal with the epidemic with the most decisive measures, and do a good job in epidemic prevention and control in a scientific and accurate manner. We firmly believe that victory is ahead!

People have been getting increasingly pissed all year, the Urumqi fire is just the dam breaking. Remember that for most of 2020 and 2021, things in China were largely normal while the rest of the world was in chaos. There was a national smugness, look we fixed covid while all those foreigners can't. Since omicron the quarantines have gotten so much harsher, now people in China are sitting in their apartments with loving walls up around them, possibly without food, while seeing the rest of the world seemingly back to normal and wondering why we can't go outside too. Then you add on ten people dying in a fire just because they couldn't escape or get help because of being sealed in and that evidently was the last straw for a whole lot of people.

From my experience with goats in more traditional settings, it would probably smell quite special in that apartment.
Lady living near me has some chickens, but they have a ground floor apartment, so it's not particularly weird.

Re: protests and stuff, it does seem to be coming down to the money.
People here aren't as furious about their treats as elsewhere, but they do prioritise income, and that's been hurt by the various lockdowns.

Problem is, it's hard to see a way forward. Other countries are able to get on with their lives because a lot of the most vulnerable people are already dead, and people there are used to hospitals being ridiculous for months at a time, and the population level effects of prolonged repeated viral infection haven't really been fully acknowledged yet.

So... what to do? I feel that "zero covid lockdowns" and "covid fuckin' everywhere" are both undesirable, but since a country can choose to end the first but not the second, it is more unstable and therefore will decay over a sufficiently long timescale.

I suppose it comes down to, "how much do you value the lives of a significant percentage the old and vulnerable?", on a scale from "USA!" to "???".

Beefeater1980

My God, it's full of Horatios!

Most of the stuff I’ve seen on my WeChat feed has been people complaining to the Dabai that they don’t want to do any more tests because they’ve had no income for months.

One video that got taken down was great, this lady with a strong Beijing accent just going nuts on them:

“I’m not testing again, I’m not I’m not I’m not! I’m never testing again! You just make things up, you say “positive” and someone’s positive, you say “negative” and they’re negative. I make 8,000 RMB a month and it’s been 3 months now with no income. You’ve told me I have to test, I’m not going to test. OK, you’ve completed your mission, thank you, you can go.”

And the poor guy tries to talk her into it and calls his boss over and she goes ham on him too.

“Who are you? I want to talk to your leader. Tell me their name and their telephone number.”

And the new guy, who sounds older her, tells her “the whole world is doing this” and she goes “Oh so everyone’s dead in Qatar then are they?”

Pissed off, eloquent, fast-paced arguing in Chinese is a dream to listen to. She was so quick with a comeback to everything.

E: the other one is people lawyering their way around things, enthusiastically if not entirely accurately. As Ronya has mentioned before, the Chinese constitution has quite a few civil rights in it (cf A35 which grants citizens freedom of speech, the press, assembly, association, procession and demonstration). It’s noticeable that apart from that one guy who called for the government to step down, most of the protestor demands are:
1. Stop Zero Covid Policy
2. Stop locking people up for complaining (eg about the ZCP)
