If I'm just going to play one Rune Factory, which would it be? I haven't played any since having the original on my DS like 15 years ago or whatever and I'd like to check one out. Kind of looks like 4 is better liked than 5?

As I understand it, the 4 that is released is remastered and has tons of goodies. 5 looks 3D but has much less content overall and runs poorly on the switch.

4. Rune Factory 4 Special, or RF4S is the version you want. It has all the dlc's bundled with it - they're mostly cosmetic and there's nothing wrong with the base game if you find it, but there's no real reason not to get the Special version.

5 is 3D but the controls are worse. 3, 4, and 5 are all good games, but 4 is just better.

Not sure if it entirely fits the bill for a Life Sim, but Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is free on the Epic Game Store until Nov 17. It's a pretty cute game. It'd be great option for kids, I think.

really the only thing 5 has over 4 is gay marriage, and if you get the Steam version of RF4S theres a mod for it anyway

maybe an overly specific request but are there any management/'community' games where you can raise villager stats such as self-esteem, confidence, socialbility, number of social connections, etc? i would like to live out a fantasy of building a meaningful and caring community. thank you in advance for your considerations

i am kind of imagining something Dwarf Fort / Rimworld-ish but open to suggestions. I am playing on PC only and have no consoles. I could probably be talked into emulating something if it fits good enough. I think scifi settings are very cool.

I did like Stardew Valley but I never really went all the way in on it, fundamentally because I don't really enjoy video game farms I guess. alas. maybe its cuz ive got esports brains but i do need some kind of hostility to play against, whether its environmental or enemy creatures or something

In "I Was A Teenage Exo-Colonist", each other teenager has a stat which starts out hidden, but which you can influence in order to drive them to make different life choices as the game progresses. Tammy, for example, has a "self-confidence" stat which does what you'd expect, story-wise; Marz has a "Socialism" stat which determines whether her outspoken brashness is done for the good of the community or for her own self-aggrandizement; etc.

It's more VN/Princess Maker than Rimworld/Dwarf Fortress, but it's also PC and very sci-fi. There are enemy creatures to fight, and... other things that happen that I don't want to spoil, but there's definitely a central conflict in the game.

I Was A Teenage Exo-Colonist is probably what you want.

Since you liked Stardew Valley but want more hostility, the Rune Factory series is basically the same thing but with a lot more fighting. You should give Rune Factory 4 a try sometime, it's the best in the series and has so much novel dialogue that you won't see the same dialogue line twice in a playthrough. It's on PC now.

My Time at Portia is in-between SV and RF4 in the amount of fighting it expects you to do.

im playing IWATE and its fun and good. i wish it was a smidge less aggressively tumblr, like literally naming the sport activity "sportsball," but i guess it takes an aggressively tumblr brained team to make a game like this in the first place. otherwise im having a lot of fun thinking about what kind of person "i" am and how i'd go through life on a colony. the character designs are very cool and sick. game's good

It has a pretty extensive dungeon crawling aspect to it that becomes more prominent further down the line, but sure.

Try My Life At Portia instead, there's barely any farming in that one. Oh, and Dragon Quest Builders 2.

In fact, Dragon Quest Builders 2 should probably be in the OP, it's great.

hey look,

imo IWATE is good and i appreciate getting a modern stat raising sim that isn't just doing the typical stat raising sim thing from a western dev, but after saving tammy in what would be my second play through i did just sorta realized I just didn't care enough about the world or characters for another run. not that i find the characters unlikable, but i dunno just not for me. i hope the game leads to more devs giving the sub genre a try and realizing the potential there.

I've never been good at rerunning games to get all the endings. I did one playthrough all the way and got a pretty good ending, started again, saved Tammy and my parents and prevented the breach in the walls and kind of lost interest. I would like to see the overthrew the invading fascists branch, but am not invested enough to do the whole thing again.

Started playing Dinkum today which is a New Horizons clone but in AUSTRALYA!! and its not real time thank god. It's actually pretty good but the in-game economy is a bit messed up so I can't expand very quickly because I need 75,000 dinks just to build a second building and 90,000 just to move into a real house so my australian outback village is just two tents and the only guy with an actual roof over his head is the capitalist Nook stand-in.

Also scarecrows were non-functional for a bit according to reddit because birds didn't eat crops. They patched that in before I bought it I guess but now I'm in a pickle because crafting scarecrows requires a pumpkin or a melon which I can only get by farming.

I downloaded the Common'hood demo a while ago based on its premise, put it on hold after being unable to get it to run properly, then uninstalled it after searching for a fix and learning you're eventually expected to turn the "caring community" into a crypto mining operation

They patched it, but in the early days when it rained, sharks could go wandering onto the land as they could "swim" on the wet ground.

I got quite the surprise my first rainy day, but I had a great time getting revenge the next day when there were a bunch of helpless sharks flopping about on the ground.

One thing I like about how Dinkum handles the days; the time advances as you play, Stardew style. At the end of the night, it becomes 'late'. Your stamina bar shrinks to a tiny size, so you can't carry on doing anything energetic like mining. But anything that doesn't take energy, like decorating or putting things in furnaces or whatever, is fine to keep doing as long as you like, and the day will turn over when you sleep. I like that.

If the creator said it was complete nobody would really notice especially at the price point. There are still some clipping and bugs. My character sinks halfway through his bed every night for example Scarecrows are useless because birds can’t fly over fences. There are three more updates planned of four each one themed around a season and trying to give some more seasonality to the world plus more fish, bugs furniture and collectibles.

The world does need more animal types and npcs. A full town only has like 9 people all of whom are shopkeepers and none of whom just kind of make it feel more alive. It’s a little empty on even a compete town but it’s also the Australian bush so it doesn’t exactly feel out of place either.
